They might not
be the Pet Shop Boys nor might they bring back
clouded memories of those
Judas Priest days, but Jack Off Jill certainly
has a unique musical style
that combines the two efforts in a certain fashion:
A slight 'pop' sound
backed with heavy guitars and drums, yet reminiscent
of '80s metal.
Jack Off Jill traces back to southern Florida, circa 1992. JOJ's first tour was with Marilyn Manson, and Manson even produced their first demo, but that was where MM/JOJ connection was servered. However, it was their second demo (produced by JOJ), Cockroach Waltz, that got them signed to their record label. With the release of their full-length album, Sexless Demons And Scars, this band has proven that they don't need to ride on anyone's coattails to make it big.
Though they've gone through two line-up changes - both times with the drummers and guitarists- they've finally settled in with a solid line-up. JOJ consists of Jessicka on vocals, "Agent" Robin Moulder on bass, guitarist SMP (former guiarist of Marilyn Manson), and drummer Claudia.
Robin and Jessicka had been friends with SMP since the early days of Manson, and they knew him to be a very talented guitar player, and according to Jessicka, when the position opened up, "It was just a natural progression for him to join."
Robin added, "he's a great talent to add to the band, because he is extremely experimental. He'll go off and add things to the existing songs that are very cool - little touches of his own style. He'll add the ultimate guitar riff inside the original riff. We're very happy with him - he's brought a new element to the show."
As for Claudia, Robin told me, "Jessicka and I both spoke with her on the phone and we just loved her personality. Then we jammed with her at a club, and the second we played with her, I felt this surge of energy and I had this instantaneous feeling of 'I'm going to love to play again!' And she fits in perfect - looks, personality, talent, everything!"
The Jill's have a remix album called, Covetous Creature, coming out early in November. The EP will have tentative artists such as Chris Vrenna, John Von Eaton (who has worked with the Lords Of Acid) and Brian Haught - just to name a few - working on the songs. JOJ has already bgeun writting songs for the new album as well
"Without having to put up with such a negative environment," Jessicka stated, "we're able to write new songs without having to deal with personal problems within the band, so things are a lot more productive... and Scott and Claudia are contributing some great new stuff. Sexless Demons And Scars was a raw album, and the newer stuff is more polished because the [new] members themselves are more polished, and they bring and exciting new style to the table."
Jack Off Jill: most definitely the show to see.
