What Is A Cookie?

A cookie is either a small text file that is stored on your hard drive, or some information that is stored in memory until you close your browser. MTV's Total Request Live saves this information on your system in the form of a cookie to allow: a personalized browsing experience, access to a secure implementation, or to better track usage of their web sites so people can't continuously vote for the same artist, which is what we are about to break.



How To Control Cookies

Follow the step by step procedures below to turn off your cookies in Netscape 4.0 (and higher), Internet Explorer 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 and AOL 4.0, 5.0 web broswers only. It's easy to follow and nobody should be confused. When you are have finished the easy, step by step procedures, hop back on to SLS News, once you have modified your browser, and push the "VOTE NIN NOW!" button at the top of the news page as much as possible!!!



Users Who Operate With Netscape Navigator

Beginning with version 4.0, Netscape Navigator began giving users the power to control cookies. In version 4.0 and higher, you can activate your "Cookie Alert" by pulling down the Edit menu and clicking Preferences. Click Advanced Settings at the bottom of the dialog box, and choose from the following:

  • Accept all cookies
  • Accept only cookies that get sent back to the originating server
  • Disable cookies
Another option is for Netscape Navigator to warn you before accepting a cookie. Every time there is an incoming cookie, a dialog box will ask if you want to accept it.

Users Who Operate With Internet Explorer

You can configure your browser to accept all cookies or to alert you every time a cookie is offered. Then you can decide whether to accept one or not.

If you're using Internet Explorer 5.0

  • Click Tools, then
  • Click Internet Options (On the Tools drop down menu), then
  • Click The Security Tab, then
  • Click The Button That Reads "Custom Level", and
  • Scroll Down And Click "DISABLE" Under Cookies
If you're using Internet Explorer 4.0

  • Choose View, then
  • Internet Options
  • Click the Advanced tab,
  • Scroll down to the yellow exclamation icon under Security and
  • Choose on of the three options to regulate your use of cookies

If you're using Internet Explorer 3.0

  • Choose View, then
  • Edit, then
  • Preferences, then
  • Click on Advanced, and
  • Set your options in the box labeled "Cookies"

Users Who Operate With AOL 4.0 & 5.0

If you're using AOL 4.0 and 5.0

  • Click on "My AOL" on the Tool Bar, then
  • Highlight "Preferences" and click on it, then
  • Look for the icon of "WWW" and click it, then
  • Click the Advanced, then
  • Scroll down to the yellow exclamation icon under Security
  • Choose one of the three options to regulate your use of cookies.
