Reznor even mentioned how he worked with Puff Daddy only for the money.

Trent Reznor/ Charlie Clouser Italian TV Interview Highlights

Christiano, who told us about the Nine Inch Nails interview with Trent Reznor and Charlie Clouser on December 27th, which aired on TMC2 (Italian television staiton) last night, submited only the highlights of the interview.

Christiano writes, "during this interview with (mainly) Trent and Charlie were showed various clips from nin videos 'Head Like a Hole,' 'Wish,' 'March of the Pigs,' 'Burn,' 'We're In This Together' and 'The Perfect Drug.'

Canada's Access Magazine Ranks 'The Fragile' Third Most Important Records of '99

In the Dec 99/Jan 2k edition of Canada's free "Access Magazine", found in every HMV and Randy River stores across the country, "The Fragile" is rated #3 in the "10 Most Important Records of 1999" section.

"After five years of foreplay, Trent Reznor finally shot his creative load September 21st with the 2-cd epic, "The Fragile". Debuting at number one on Billboard, the album then plummeted to number 16, the biggest recorded drop from the perch in the magazine's history. Not that this is a reflection of the album's quality. A deep, dark and dense record, The Fragile contains enough turmoil, brooding and sonic intrigue to keep fans writhing in delicious torment until the next Reznor Opus. Look for Nine Inch Nails on tour in the new year".
Then later on in the magazine, in the section labelled "Ratings", where they rate records, Nine Inch Nails' The Fragile falls as #1 and is rated as a 9 out of 10, the best of all the records in the section. In the description it says:
"A decade after Pretty Hate Machine rewrote the vocabulary in contemporary music with its amalgam of industrial beats, metallic guitars and aching vocals, and more than five years since The Downward Spiral made him a star, Trent Reznor offers us The Fragile, a breathtaking 23-song, 2-cd set which further refines his particularly dystopic musical vision while revealing previously undetected traces of hope and reconciliation within his emotional palette. What Reznor has done- successfully, against much expectation-is to sidestep the musical clichÈs his work has inspired (now being profitably exploited by the likes of Filter and Stabbing Westward) and to move forward without fear or comprimise. Again written and recorded primarily by himself, Reznor's latest employs some notable players, including King Crimson guitarist Adrian Belew ("The Great Below", "Where is everybody?"), ex- David Bowie pianist Mike Garson ("Just Like You Imagined", "Ripe (With Decay)") and former Ministry drummer William Rieflin ("La Mer"). The dance floor stompers are still there ("No, You Don't", "Starfuckers, Inc") but the really revelatory pieces are the quieter but no less ferocious songs like "The Great Below" and "The Frail". By turns frightening, exhilarating, heartbreaking and angry, The Fragile is an epic, dense work which never stints in its ambition."

Richard Patrick Comments More About The Fragile & Trent Reznor In Guitar Magazine

In the February 2000 edition of Guitar World, NIN, and Trent Reznor are mention quite a few times.

In one column with Johhny Rezeznik (Goo Goo Dolls) was listing his influences, and he named "Gimme Shelter" by the Rolling Stones as an influence. He goes on to say "Probobly the greatest song ever written. It's so dark, it makes Nine Inch Nails sound like Elvis Costello."

There is also an article with Richard Patrick of Filter, which we list only the quotes pertaining to NIN.

Guitar World says: "On one bender; Patrick told a journalist that he'd had a homoerotic relationship with Trent Reznor during his stint as Nine Inch Nail's road guitarist.- Talking about how alcohol gets him in trouble." Which it then goes on how he and Trent met...

"He was playing in the usual string of junior high and high school rock bands, citing one called the Act as "the most serious." It was at a local music store that Patrick met another of the area's most aspiring rockers and all-around misfits, Trent Reznor." - GW

Patrick goes on to say; Not long after he asked me to be in the first version of Nine Inch Nails, which was called 'Crown of Thorns,' but found out that name was already under copyright. Patrick goes on to explain why he left.

When asked about how he likes 'The Fragile,' Patrick responded, "Well I like one song on it."

Thanks a lot to: Ben.

Second Part To Rare Charlie Clouser MBM Remix

The second part of "Asbestos Lead Asbestos (Joined At The Hip Mix)" is now available in MPEG3 format at 'Charlie Clouser - The Remix Files.' Hervé ALFIERI, webmaster to the unofficial Charlie Clouser website writes, "You certainly remember that this track is an extremely rare remix by Charlie Clouser of the Meat Beat Manifesto song released in '96 only on the ALA 12'' vinyl promo."

"The first part was an 'atmospheric dance' mix (6 min 00)," adds Hervé, "while the second part sounds more like a 'jungle' mix (5 min 10). The two parts will be available a few more days only... That's the new year's gift of 'The Remix Files' to all Charlie Clouser / NIN fans!

Follow the link above to the main page of "The Remix Files", then click "Remixes" and finally the last part of the "Meat Beat Manifesto" remix.

Japanese WITT Single Information, Upcoming Clouser/Reznor Interview in BUZZ Magazine

Commy, our news pioneer from overseas, sent us an advertisement, which has information about the Japanese "We're In This Together" single. A company by the name of 'Universal Victor Japan' distributes the official Japanese advertisement, inresult runs all the official NIN distribution. The Japanese version of Halo 15 is no different than the versions that are already in the UK, but Japan's three-parter single, which is running a little late, has a set release date for January 19th.

Universal Victor Japan is currently holding a campaign which you can win more NIN collectables from overseas for those customers who buy all of three versions.

"While ago I told you one of the Japanese overseas music magazines would feature a review of a NIN European tour," Commy explained, "but there isn't anything new, there's only a review of just a crap." She adds, "One little thing is a pretty interesting. A reporter asked Trent what he was doing for Christmas?" Commy said, "Trent answered that he is going to his grandfather's place to spend the Holidays time with him."

Click here if you are interested in viewing a photo of Trent performing on another David Carson Flower-like design on Trent Reznor's guitar.

There is to be a new interview with Charlie Clouser and Trent Reznor in BUZZ magazine, featuring each a 15-minute interview. The interview, which will be out next month, will have a mid-February release. These interviews were done on December 1st, before their show.

Commy will be uploading more scans of Japanese magazines in her archives later. If you are interested them, please visit her site.

ATR To Possibly Rejoin NIN During American Tour Dates

Although the European Fragility tour has been over for over a month now, it appears Trent Reznor is interested in keeping the fighting force who opened for them during the North American dates. Alec Empire, the founder of ripsaw teardown-electronic punk band Atari Teenage Riot, told Alternative Press online that "Trent Reznor has asked Empire to support NIN on their impending American tour."

Trent Reznor had this to say about Atari Teenage Riot in Gaffa magazine, which is a free Denmark magazine.

"I like the collision of technology and pure hardcore. Right in the face. I like the anger, the ridiculous and exaggeration about it. It could be fun to form such a band, but they do it better than I would. I think they're inspiring."

NIN Parody: Trent Reznor Working with The Backstreet Boys?

Kraw, a longtime friend of SLS, has discovered a startling article that suggests Trent Reznor may be involved with the chart-topping boy band, The Backstreet Boys.

"According to the report Reznor has forsaken his work with NIN to enjoy a more rewarding career as a teen idol." kraw says.

Although SLS cannot confirm the validity of this report, Kraw has provided the URL so viewers can decide for themselves. Click here to view the whole article.

Editor's Notes: this is something Kraw created, this is not to be taken literally.... it's only a parody, just like the Meathead Perspective! Geeeezzzz....

Natural Born Killer's Goes DVD

Oliver Stone's "Natural Born Killers: Director's Cut" is scheduled for release on January 25th on DVD. The special features is said to have interviews, theatrical trailer, deleted scenes, audio commentary, interactive menus, scene access and alternate endings. There is a strong possibility that the audio commentary, which will be a series of illustrative explanatory notes about the movie, will use BURN by Nine Inch Nails. Given the complete nature of DVDs, it would seem likely that BURN would be included in the special features as it was part of the deluxe edition of the home video.

Year In Music: USA Today Ranks 'The Fragile' #1 Pop/Rock Album of 1999

The entertainment critics of USA Today look back at 1999's highs and lows in the Tuesday, December 28th issue. Edna Gundersen, Rock/Pop critic, ranks Nine Inch Nails' The Fragile #1 album of 1999!!

Just as we read those brief and highly commendatory descriptions on backs of movie boxes around the world. The review written below, found in the LIFE section of yesterdays issue, sums the entire album in under 5 glorious sentences...

01. Nine Inch Nails: The Fragile

This delightfully subversive but beautiful art-rock opus filters armies of guitars, riptides of bass and swarms of strings through Trent Reznor's ruthless computers and warped imagination, resulting in orchestrations poisoned by otherworldly racket and industrial-strength din tethered to sublime pop hooks. Even the gentlest piano interludes have an eerie menace and instability. The electronic pulse quickens, then turns erratic, as ambient beehives of noise engulf pristine melodies, huge choruses and disfigured violins, cellos, and ukuleles. Part of The Fragile's unsettling charm lies in its constant threat of imminent doom.

Below is the list of best Rock/Pop albums of 1999:
02. Rage Against The Machine: The Battle of Los Angeles
03. Beck: Midnight Vultures
04. Moby: Play
05. Richard Thompson: Mock Tudor
06. Fiona Apple: When The Pawn Hits...
07. Eminem: The Slim Shady LP
08. Paul McCartney: Run Devil Run
09. Beth Orton: Central Reservation
10. Basement Jaxx: Remedy
On a related note, Ministry's latest album, "Dark Side Of The Spoon" was unfortunately placed at #5 on USA Today's worst albums list.

Thanks a lot to: Steven Flores, DarkHorizons and toRon.

"Lost" NIN Tracks Currently In Production

Although this thread was erased off the official Nine Inch Nails discussion board, says an SLS viewer, we thought we would let fans know that the cut tracks off The Fragile, which are in discussion to be released on an EP, are still being worked on says Keith Hillebrandt. Below is the official question and answer:

Question: If I'm not mistaken, I came across an interview with Reznor where he mentioned working on the songs that didn't appear on The Fragile and possibly releasing them on an EP or something. Are you guys currently working on such a project?

Keith Hillebrandt: Yes, the tracks are being worked on.

Squarepusher Album Review In AP Magazine

In the same Alternative Press issue, on page 92 is a Squarepusher album review of "Selection Sixteen" by Christopher Porter:

SQUAREPUSHER (review)
Selection Sixteen

Square electronica from a prolific pusher.

Tom "Squarepusher" Jenkinson is a busy man. Perhaps so busy he doesn't have time to adequately police his releases. His third CD this year, Selection Sixteen is a hodge-podge of electronica genres pilfered by the willful and seemingly parodic Jenkinson. "Dedicated Loop" sounds like a tribute to Cabaret Voltaire; "Tomorrow World" invokes u-Ziq's flair for synth-pop melodies over frantic drums; "Schizm Track #1" sounds like a modern take on electro; "Snake Pass" is the sort of functional trance techno (i.e., dance music) Jenkinson usually dismisses as piffle.

His normal modus operandi of drill & bass and fusion funk is only hinted on Selection Sixteen. And even those tracks seem like sophomoric teases. The 98 second "Freeway" sounds like the sort of Weather Report-meets-Aphex Twin Jenkinson focused on for Budakhan Mindphone and Music Is Rotted One Note, and the 29-second "Yo" is similarly aborted fusion. Squarepusher fans will need not wait long for his next release, but if Jenkinson decides to do dance music again--and he's talented enough to do what- ever he wants--let's hope that the bedroom-bound boffin will spend some time gathering vibes in the clubs before trying to capture them on hard disk. (Nothing/Warp)-Christopher Porter

Information About A NIN Promotional Video

An SLS viewer, who goes by the name of Silence, wrote us recently to inform NIN fans living in Brisbane; Australia that there is a music store in Queensland called 'Toombul Music' that offers a great deal when you purchase a copy of The Fragile. For a limited time only, this music outlet is offering a NIN promotional video free with any purchase of "The Fragile".

"They say that they have a couple of hundred in stock and the video basically consists of the videos for the songs: 'We're in this Together,' 'Closer', 'March of the Pigs,' 'The Perfect Drug,' 'Burn,' 'Head Like a Hole' and 'Pinion'," writes Silence. "The WITT clip is not the extended version only the one released for music programs," he adds. "Basically all the clips are full length with nothing cut or any words muted," he continued. "The closer clip is good as it doesn't have that annoying arty shot of Trent playing the piano on the TV at the end of the clip like the one off 'Closure'."

"Overall the video is a good score," he adds, "as the video for burn was not included on 'Closure' and this is a way of getting a good full version."

On the right is a scan of the front of the video case, "basically the video spine only has the words: 'NIN Video Compile' and then 'Promotional use only - not for sale' written underneath," Silence added.

Reader's Poll Results From Wall Of Sound & SPIN/ ARIA Charts Concerning The Fragile & TLTOE

Nine Inch Nails' The Fragile is ranked #6 in Wall Of Sound's readers poll for Best Album of The Year," although the Backstreet Boys are #5, so we don't know how seriously this poll should be taken.

We should add, that on one of our upcoming updates we'll have an extensive look at the new reader's poll SPIN issue. Lets Just say Trent cleaned house while dearest Fred Durst got the big "fuck you" from the public. Trent got lots of praise from other artists as well. Its happening slowly but surely! Very cool stuff.

Also Marilyn Manson's "The Last Tour On Earth" currently rests at #16 since last week, but The Fragile has dropped one place to #20 on the Alternative ARIA chart.

Thanks a lot to ReadyFireAim, NINXPX and to Lord Soth.

Scott Putesky Working On 'Spooky Kids' Rareities

We've been informed that Scott Putesky, formerly Daisy Berkowitz, is currently working on releasing about 21 songs from the 'Spooky Kids' era of Marilyn Manson. These old rarities which are very hard to find will be distributed either by CD or by the web, possibly liquid audio in the near future.

New Italian NIN Interview

Cristiano, an SLS viewer in Italy, wrote us to say that on Thursday, December 20th on Italian television (channel TMC2) there will be an interview with NIN, featuring Trent Reznor and Charlie Clouser. The program is called "File" and it'll be aired at 2:30 PM (Italian Time). Anyone who is willing to watch the program, please write me. Thanks!

Marilyn Manson Quote Of The Year

Radio One, the UK's biggest radio station, have named Marilyn Manson's quote of the year:

"I think it's kind of rock n' rolls last hope, this album." referring to Mechanical Animals as one of their Quotes Of The Year.

"They named it 16," writes Mr. Pogo, "and Manson's was last, but I don't think it was in any special order." "Although this is very surprising," he explains, "because with the exception of one show a week that broadcasts at midnight on Tuesdays, they never pay any attention to anyone heavier than Britney Spears."

Richard Patrick Talks About NIN on Rage

Daniel, an SLS viewer, wrote us to explain on Sunday, 26th December at 2:40am he was watching RAGE (ABC Television Australia) which aired snippets of various artists who have guest programmed rage. In this particular snippet was lead singer, Richard Patrick of Filter and another member playing various songs. Richard came on and said the following things...

"I have a little confession to make," said Richard, "I used to be a 'Nine Inch Nail'. I don't usually tell anybody that because I tend to keep it a secret." He continues, "I used to be the guitarist and while I was there I couldn't have any creative input - so I quit." While watching snippets of the HLAH video, Richard explained, "This clip is of Head Like A Hole and its pretty funny. It shows me with a long mowhawk going all the way down to here (points a bit below his shoulders). I want you to watch it, it's pretty funny."

Go to or look at the particular nights playlist by clicking here or click here to view real video footage of Richard speaking about NIN.

Season's Greetings From Marilyn Manson

The message below, which can be found on the official Marilyn Manson News page, is also on every Manson holiday card, which I hope to have permission to scan/post later this evening...

Away in a manger, no crib for his bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, but little Lord Jesus no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky, And stay by my side until morning is nigh.

Music Of A New Generation Rankes NIN & Manson In Top 50

Sabrinia, an SLS viewer who is currently in Asia, was browsing through a couple of magazines in HMV and noticed a Chinese music magazine called "Music of a new generation." The magazine, just like every other magazine currently on stands, featured a countdown for their best 50 records of the 90's, and NIN's "The Downward Spiral" was listed at #19, while Marilyn Manson's "Antichrist Superstar" was #50. "My Chinese language skills aren't exactly the best," she explains, "so I'm not entirely sure what the caption said. In the case of NIN it said something to the extent of how Trent defined industrial rock." She then adds, "Don't ask me what they wrote about MM."

Some New 'The The' Tour Dates

Sabrina also received an update from a German concert promoter, about tour dates for "The The". Apparently they'll be playing in Hamburg: Grünspan, Feb 2nd. The only other tour date she knows of, is Jan 31st in London: Garage. "I have no idea if this was mentioned before or not," she adds, "but I figure, it won't harm to let you know." We assume more dates will be added soon.

Marilyn Manson Featured On Upcoming MTV Uncensored Program

MTV Uncensored, a 2 hour special that airs on Saturday from 5-7pm ET, will give the audience a revealing look at MTV as told by the people who were there. The 2 hour special begins with a self-deprecating peek into the MTV archives - the untold stories, the real deal, the secrets they said they'd never tell. MTV Uncensored uncovers it all from the origins of MTV to those not so watchable contests to homegrown stars to "Choose or Lose." MTV Uncensored will reveal who auditioned to be VJs back in the day, as well as the very first television appearances of Will Smith, Jennifer Lopez, and the pre-Marilyn Manson, just to mention a few. Viewers will also get to see their first attempts at putting on a live show, as well as interviews from hell and never-before-seen footage, such as behind-the-scenes clips of "Unplugged" that never aired, the pilots for "Remote Control" featuring Ted Demme as host, and the first pilot of "The Real World." These moments don't come together by themselves....you'll see what it's like to work at MTV with interviews from real MTV staffers. Finally, MTV Uncensored will look at the new shows and the new relationships that will inevitably make the sequel.

Kerrang! Lists More Top Year Picks From Artist's Favorite Albums Of '99

The latest issue of Kerrang! magazine features Wes Borland, Limp Bizkit guitarist, naming The Fragile as one of his top albums of the year:

"I liked the Rage Against The Machine album 'Battle Of Los Angeles' and the Nine Inch Nails Album. There was so much good stuff this year because everyone wanted to make their mark before the turn of the century".
Fred Durst, Limp Bizkit singer, gave his "Favorite Insult of 1999" as:
"The best one I read was Trent Reznor telling 'Rolling Stone' magazine 'Fred Durst can surf a piece of plywood up my ass'. We'd been telling everyone how great we thought his record was and then we saw that. He records are still amazing and he's great but I don't understand why he said that."
Also, Gavin Rossdale of Bush named Marilyn Manson as one of his favorite live acts this year, along with Hole and Massive Attack.

Finally, "The Fragile" was the 9th best selling rock album in the UK this year, and "The Last Tour On Earth" 31st. These positions are based solely on actual sales figures, with no allowance for when the albums were released (with the exception of The Foo Fighters at number 5, all the albums above NIN were released in June or earlier).

Thanks a lot to: meow.

NIN's 'Broken' Listed As An Album That Defined The Decade

In the Detroit free press entertainment section, they named 13 songs and albums that defined the decade. Even though they didn't give any order, they mentioned NIN album "Broken". This is what they had to say:

Trent Reznor's jagged-edged EP was either triumphant catharsis or self-absorbed excess. Either way, it welcomed a host of injured ids to the rock confessional booth.
Other bands mentioned ranged from Nirvana, to Public Enemy, Alanis Morissette, to Dr. Dre.

The official Nine Inch Nails websiite features both a real video stream, just like MTV, and an awesome downloadable quicktime version of "Somewhat Damaged," extra live footage cut from last night's Fragility tour broadcast. The exclusive quicktime version is 4.9 megs and is highly recommended!

Thanks a lot to: max, robert, fate.

Nine Inch Nails Climbs Back Up The Chart

People have begun to come to their senses! For the first time since its release, The Fragile has had increases in sales and is moving up the chart! According to current soundscan figures, 2 weeks ago The Fragile was resting at #170. Well, lo and behold last week it jumped 7 places to #163 selling 15,914 units. This week, The Fragile clocks in at #158 selling 21,541 units. All this still with little video or radio support and no US tour. Better call dear old MTV about their list of albums that "tanked". =)

Thanks a lot to: NINXPX.

Kerrang! Ranked the Fragile No. 3 Out In Their Top 20 Albums of the Year

The latest issue of Kerrang! magazine named their top twenty albums (out of the 1277 they reviewed) and placed The Fragile at number 3, with this comment: "Ultimately, 'The Fragile' is worth the wait and equal to the hype. Reznor is the true genius of 90's rock, and this is his masterpiece".

Also 13 of the 36 staff (all staff, not just the writers) at the magazine placed The Fragile in their top 20 albums, 4 of them placed it as their favorite. Marilyn Manson's live album, "The Last Tour On Earth" was placed in the personal top 20 of 6 of the staff. Featured in this same issue is a poster shot of Trent Reznor, the photo of him on the December 11th issue of Kerrang!.

In their annual Christmas quiz are the following the questions: "Name the brand new studio track on Marilyn Manson's 'The Last Tour On Earth' live album," "Marilyn Manson recreates the assassination of which US president in the video for 'Coma White?," "How many songs were there on Nine Inch Nails epic 'The Fragile' album?" and "What is Trent Reznor's real Christian name?"

The magazine also mentioned that there would be a "Rare and unseen photo pull out" of Marilyn Manson in the January 5th issue.

Thanks a lot to: Mr Pogo.

Reznor Chat Transcript & Fragility Tour Brodacast Highlights

Last night Trent Reznor held his first online chat associated with Yahoo!, MTV and SonicNet. Judging by the number of successful questions answered; that chat went surprisingly well!

The chat took place between 11:30pm and 12:45am, EDT, December 21-22, 1999, following their Fragility tour broadcast at 11:00pm on MTV. By the way, the NIN broadcast setlist went as follows: "The Way Out Is Through," "Head Like A Hole," "Piggy," "The Frail," "The Wretched," "The Great Below," "Starfuckers Inc.," and "The Day The World Went Away." Great camera angles, and awesome sound made this event spectacular! Please read yesterday's headline; "Letter From Trent Reznor About North America Fragility Tour & Info About MTV Broadcast," to learn what Trent Reznor had to say to us North American fans....

The layout of the chat was such that you submitted questions to the moderator, and they would pose these questions to Trent. According to Warren, an SLS viewer who helped us out with the chat transcript, believes Trent wasn't sitting at a computer. "It was someone else typing his words for him," he says. Anyhow, thanks again to Warren for his hard work... he has transcribed the questions and answers, since the rest is just noise.

It's worth noting that there were no more than 25 people in the chat room Trent Reznor spoke in... Only about a dozen of those were really saying anything. Oddly, most of the questions came from people who weren't in the chat room at the time. In fact, only one person's question got posed to Trent. In reality hundreds of other fans were broken up into separate pages, numbered all the way up to 300! It is said that Trent could not read what was being written in the chats other than the questions posed by the moderator.

Trent answered questions about 'The Day The World Went Away' video, Sister Soleil collaboration, Tapeworm mid-2000, his favorite artists he would like to work with and much, much more. Although, the chat went smoothly for some, the fans in the other rooms had a difficult time reading the answers, such as myself.

Click here to read the entire chat transcript. After you finish reading the transcript, hop on over to MTV.com and check out the exclusive live version of "Somewhat Damaged" in streaming real video format. MTV also said that the live NIN broadcast will be popping its head again in the near future. We'll keep you posted for those who were unable to find a blank tape at the last minute. We should expect the rerun to not feature scrolling text nor the annoying "best of MTV logo" on the screen.

We forgot to mention that the new nin video, Into The Void, is said to be scheduled for the first week of January.

Into The Void NIN Single Release Date

Weathermen Records is pleased to announce that the "Into The Void" NIN single will be released on January 10th, 2000 in Australia. Those who preorder now will recieve it by January 17, 2000.

The tracklist is the following: "Into The Void," "We're In This Together," "The Perfect Drug," and "New Flesh"

"We are hoping that there will also be a UK 2 parter that will come available as well," adds The Weathermen.

Letter From Trent Reznor About North America Fragility Tour & Info About MTV Broadcast

Trent Reznor wrote SeemsLikeSalvation News today to inform fans, that the North American tour production, which kicks off in February 2000, will be on a larger scale than the European and quite possibly the Japan tour as well!

The MTV special was a way to document the first of I hope many legs of the 'fragility' tour. The size of venues, the choice of music, the scale and approach to production of those shows will most likely not be reproduced EVER with the exception of possibly Japan. I was pleasantly surprised at the reaction and felt the need to somehow fill everybody else in on what happened.

Technical notes: all the video was filmed by friends and fans on consumer level DV. The audio was mixed in a studio, but not 'fixed' or re-recorded as is so often so. What you see is close to what it was - close but not the same.

Pre-Register NIN Chat At Yahoo Now!

Nothing Records informed us that, this link, will take people directly to the page where the chat will be held. The Trent Reznor chat room does not open until 11:00pm ET tonight, although it doesn't official begin until 11:30, but fans can pre-register here at Yahoo! in the events calendar section.

By the way, don't miss the last full moon of the millennium tomorrow night. If you have the chance sometime before or after the chat, check it out! It is said to be the biggest it has ever been in 135 years and much brighter than usual!

New Trent Reznor Interview In Gaffa Magazine

Trent Reznor is featured in the free Denmark magazine entitled "Gaffa," which is the type of magazine you would pick up at a record store, bar or coffee shop. In this new interview, Trent mentions how he would enjoy working with Marilyn Manson once again, his thoughts behind dance remixes, how David Carson was chosen to create the Fragile cover art, how TDS is now getting recognition, how his next album would focus more on the lyrics and then some.... Reznor also comments about if he would ever make another soundtrack, he would actually write the music instead of creating a compliation of pop-or rock songs.

Below is a snippet from the interview:

Natural Born Killers was a pleasure to work with, because I really liked the movie and I was very involved. There were some very creative people working on it. It was something away from NIN, with no pressure. On Lost Highway I had the possibility of working with David Lynch and he is one of my heroes. To sit in a room with him, that moment was worth all the work. I see them as minor projects, not insanely important. If I should make another soundtrack, then I would write the music from the start, not just pop- or rock songs.
Another highly recommeded interview, which can be read here in its entirety.

Thanks a lot to: DiminaSky.

Fan Speaks To Jimmies Chicken Shack About NIN Cover Song

Casey Russell, an SLS viewer, attended a Jimmie's Chicken Shack concert in Columbus recently and yes, just like the many other fans, she saw JCS perform a NIN cover song. "On stage they were talking about anger rock and trying to be more angry," said Casey. They then said, "maybe Trent Reznor could finish off the night." Sometimes, if not everytime, JCS likes to cover 'Sanctified,' by Nine Inch Nails, as an intro to 'High'. "They changed a little in the words," she adds, "but I can't remember what was changed." Following the show Casey got a chance to speak with Jimi Haha, the lead singer, and told him, "I liked the cover of NIN." He replied, "Reznor's a cool guy and the band has to reach their dark side ever once in a while."

The Fragile Ranked No. 4 By Latin American Time Magazine

The monthly Latin American newspaper edition of Time magazine, which comes out in almost every country of central and South America, ranks The Fragile 4th greatest album of '99. Although the ranking remains the same as the American issue, read our December 15th headline, "The Best of 1999: Nine Inch Nails Ranked #4 By Time Magazine" for more info, there is a new review with the ranking which we translated into English from Spanish.

"In a time where happy and boring pop music rules the charts, Trent Reznor gives us a great album about sadness and loneliness that shows the rock world how it's done."
Rage Against The Machine was No.1 for those who missed our Dec 15th update.

Thanks a lot to: Francisco Valdés.

We thought we should mention that Mika Salmi, who discovered and signed industrial rock god Trent Reznor, has new company called Atom Films, which is gathering quite a bit of funding. Atom Films is a website that provides a wealth of short films & animated flicks for viewing over the web. A very cool site, make sure you have Flash!

Reznor/Clouser Interview Highlights From Crossbeat Magazine

Commy, the Japan loving NIN fan, wrote us yet again with some info concerning a Japanese overseas music magazine called "Crossbeat", which featured a Nine Inch Nails European tour review, as well as live photos and a short interview with Trent Reznor and Charlie Clouser.

The tour review/article and photos were all from the last two NIN performance in London. Unfortunately, the photos were not all that good, compared to what we normally see out of "professional photography." Commy wasn't entirely impressed she said.

We were told that the Trent Reznor photo on the right, one of the few good ones, will all be found on Commy's beautiful website, ThePerfectDrug, specifically located in the "J-archives" section sometime soon.

The Trent Reznor interview, was not as entirely important to read since the same questions were asked from past interviews. We're told that Trent basically gave the same explanations about the change between The Downward Spiral to The Fragile, so we aren't truly missing anything.

Charlie Clouser mentioned during his interview, that one the early European gigs, Robin Finck hurt his forehead while performing on stage next to Trent, while they were bundled together with a microphone cord. Although Clouser didn't have an explanation to give about the accident, he then explained that while Robin tried to escape from his condition, he quickly knocked down a microphone stand and his guitar with his head, which he then fell strait into a drum kit! Jerome Dillan, now involved in this stage scale event, stopped his drumming for just a moment to quickly fix his kit to continue the show.

When the smoke finally began to rise, it was clearly visible that Robin's forehead was bleeding, which was later revealed to be a one and a half inch wound. Throughout the madness, Robin sat down and continued playing 'til the end of the show while bleeding from the head. Ouch.....

Moving along, Charlie then mention that the upcoming Japanese and Australian tour will include a set list full of past work and Fragile tunes, just as the European tour did. The classic songs were included in the Fragility tour, because NIN never performed the majority of those tracks in the past for European fans 'til now. Clouser then went on to explain the North American tour will feature more performances from The Fragile, than songs from their previous albums, which will add more variety to their performances... Yes, for those who are wondering, they will be performing older tracks from The Downward Spiral and such... "We love old NIN songs and also love playing them," adds Clouser. The band prepared some Fragile songs for the Japanese tour, which they finished during rehearsal, but were never performed in Europe. Examples of some songs Clouser gave were "Please", "Where is everybody" and "The Fragile". He didn't mention they would actually be performed in Japan, more likely as a possibility.

Trent Reznor Chat Details

In anticipation of the first ever online chat with Trent Reznor, we decided to jump the gun a bit to inform those who have not had the chance to dig up info concerning tomorrow's chat at 11:30pET/8:30pPT. Yahoo!, in association with MTV, is presumably holding the chat on their pages here, reports MTV News. So, without a moment to lose, click on over to Yahoo's SIGN IN/LOG ON/ACCOUNT section of their site, to be safe than sorry...

On the right is the photo advertisement Yahoo! is currently using to promote the Trent Reznor yahoo chat immediately following the live European footage broadcast on their website.

Be sure to think or write down your few questions now, because once the doors open, two blank fields will be shown, which will enable you to submit questions for Trent to answer, while the second field will be to communicate with those who are also in the room. So, for those who don't know... your questions are numbered and could quite possibly be answered in the order they are received.

For those who might be interested, I recently assembled my public yahoo! profile, which you may read. My name/handle will be "sls_news." I hope to see you all there!

Stephen King Mentions Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails about Violence in Schools

The Learning Channel ran a special last night entitled "Stephen King - Master of Macabre," which Stephen King briefly mentioned both Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails. The show consisted of movie footage and conversations with Kathy Bates, Rob Reiner (as well as others) to give an intimate portrait of the prolific author. Included in the program were clips from "The Green Mile," King's new film currently in theaters. (I highly recommend this 3-hour film by the way.)

Speaking about the first book, "The Rage," Stephen King explained that it was no longer in publication, because of the Paducah, Kansas and Columbine, Colorado school shootings since the story was about a student who brought a gun to school to shoot his classmates. Deeply disturbed about the school shootings, his book was found in one of the murderer's school lockers, which was one of the major leading issues that suspended his fictional story.

King commented on how he didn't believe kids could commit senseless violence because of books such as his. He also explained that he doesn't believe that neither they did it because they listen to Metalica or commit suicide because of Nine Inch Nails albums, nor does he think kids worship Satan because they listen to Marilyn Manson. Shortly thereafter, the intro to 'Diary of a Dope Fiend' was used in the background.

Although there are no planned reruns for the program this week, I'll try and keep a look out so we can get video footage online.

Thanks a lot to: Jason Vowell, Legion Of Doom.

Senior Editor at Sonicnet lists NIN on top 10

Gil Kaufman, a good friend to SLS News over at Sonicnet News, chose Nine Inch Nails's The Fragile as No. 6 for his top 10 Albums of 1999. This is what he had to say, "Why headphones were invented. An overwrought bleak symphony that rarely feels overcooked. The dark side of Trent's moon."

Triple J Chose The Fragile As One Of The Top 10 Albums Of The Year

Triple J, an Australian radio station, ran a countdown of their top 10 albums of 1999, which was interactive via the Internet. Rabea Khan, an SLS viewer said, "Of course, The Fragile was at No.7. The only annoying thing was with all the other bands they had a short interview but there was no interview with Trent."

The top 10 went like this:

10 The Tea Party - Triptych, 09 Rage Against The Machine - The Battle of Las Angeles, 08 Moby - Play, 07 Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile, 06 The Whitlams - Love This City, 05 Placebo - Without You I'm Nothing, 04 silverchair - Neon Ballroom, 03 Something For Kate - Beautiful Sharks, 02 Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Californication, 01 Alex Lloyd - Black The Sun

Trent Reznor Quote of The Year, Manson Noozmaker of The Year

The December 17th, '99 issue of Album Network, a music industry magazine, chose Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor's quote from Rollingstone Magazine reflecting on the TV coverage of Woodstock '99 he watched from his New Orleans studio.... perhaps forgetting that Fred Durst is now a Senior VP at NIN's label, Interscope.

"It struck me as some of the worst shit I'd ever seen. It was dismal synopsis of everything that's bad in music right now. The incredible lack of importance seemed to jump off the screen at me...let Fred Durst surf a piece of plywood up my ass."
Also, in the same year end issue, on page 78 of the of Album Network, Marilyn Manson was chosen "Noozmaker of The Year."
To paraphrase Charles Dickens, 1999 represented the best of times and the worst of times for The Album Network's 1998 Male Performer Of The Year, Marilyn Manson. Despite pretty much dropping out of sight after the Columbine shootings and the ensuing media circus surrounding Manson and his music, MM still managed to have-by far-the most mentions in Nasty Nooz section this year.
Click the scan on the left to read some of the highlights-or lowlights, as the case may be-of Marilyn Manson's tumultuous year.

Charlie Clouser - The Remix files: Online Exclusive Remix

Morpheus TechnoPagan, an SLS viewer who is a major Charlie Clouser fan, wrote us again with some kewl news for Clouser fans on his unofficial website.

"Only very few people know that Charlie Clouser remixed in 1996 'Asbestos Lead Asbestos' by Meat Beat Manifesto," said Morpheus. "The remix - called 'Joined at the hip mix' - was never commercially released and appeared only on the out-of-print US promo 12'' of 'Asbestos Lead Asbestos' (INT8P-6050)."

Morpheus explained, "The remix running time is 11 min and 38 sec. The first 6 minutes features the "typical" Charlie Clouser trademark: techno-beat, phat analog basslines, effects on the voice, etc..." Morpheus then adds, "The end of the track is more unusual, because it sounds much more like a drum & bass remix."

Considering that this song was a promo release only that is almost impossible to find nowadays, "I put the first 6 minutes of the 'Joined At The Hip Mix' available for download (MPEG 3 format) on 'Charlie Clouser - The Remix Files'. For that purpose, go to the main page, select the 'Remixes' section and click on the 'Meat Beat Manifesto' button."

"This track will be available for a few days only," he adds. "In case of positive feedback, I might put the rest of the song available for download later..."

Radiant Decay NIN Tribute Album Update: Wish Sample and Album Contest

Within the next few days BrokeBox.com will be posting a second audio clip of their version of "Wish" on their official website. They also told us, "In the coming weeks you can also look for us to give away some copies of 'Radiant Decay: A Tribute to Nine Inch Nails'." In order to win a CD you must join their e-mail mailing list. "Your e-mail address will NOT be sold or given out to any companies, adds Broke Box. "We will randomly select names from the list to determine the winners."

The Premier of Arnold Schwarzenegger's new movie "End Of Days" was featured as a rerun on cable from Fox Studios in Sydney the other day. 'The Downward Spiral' Ranked Tenth Best Recording of All Time By EQ Magazine

In the December '99 issue of EQ Magazine there is a feature on "The Best Recordings of All Time." Nine Inch Nails' "The Downward Spiral" placed 10 out of the 10 best recordings of all time - right behind Michael Jackson's Thriller! TDS was the only album listed in the top 10 that was from the 90's. Other best recordings (as in soundwise) from the top 10 included Beach Boys: Pets Sounds, Michael Jackson: Thriller. The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band made No. 1.

The NIN article goes on with a long list of the equipment used to record the album, such as a Studer 800, Shure beta 57 and 58s, a Neumann U87, and a bunch of different analog keyboards. Trent also comments on some of the methods he used in recording drums, noises, etc...

Click the scan on the right to expand the brief Trent Reznor interview. Note: The very first paragraph from the scan doesn't pertain to nin, it's about the number 9 best album.

New Trent Reznor Interview In 'Visions' Magazine

We mentioned on December 11th, read our "Trent Reznor Graces The Cover of Visions Magazine + New Manson & Twiggy Interviews" headline for more info, that there was a new Trent Reznor interview in the German music magazine "Visions." As you can see on the right, Reznor is the featured December cover story of Visions magazine, now on stands, answers many related questions about The Fragile, the tour, The Downward Spiral, media and many, many other attributes.

Below is a blurb from the new interview:

The track "I'm Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally" is dedicated to a Clara. That's your grandmother, right?

Yes, she's the woman who raised me and passed away.

The song title implies suicidal tendencies

Yes. At the time she went, I really felt weak and fragile. But I then aimed to find the weaknesses in order to make a record that puts together the pieces that had fallen apart. I started right at the bottom and faced my fears. I had to get through that. I just did it and watched what came out of it. For two years, I never slept more than 4 hours a night. Of course that's not healthy, but the record is the best one, I've ever made. The musical level has risen. I'm downright surprised that it's finished and I'm very proud of it. It gives me back the respect towards myself.

Thanks so much to Sabrina, a friend to SLS in Germany, who translated/transcribed the entire interview, which is now online here. We're told there are a few new photos of Trent in this issue that were shot by Kevin Westernberg such as the cover, that we don't have to post. The highly recommend interview includes comments from David Bowie, Flea of 'Red Hot Chili Peppers' and Alice Cooper about Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails following the interview.

Austrian Radio Station Ranks The Fragile Album of the Year

The Austrian radio station FM4. Announced The Fragile as the #1 album of the year in the category "Hard & Heavy." #2 was Filter, #3 Korn, #4 12 Rounds and on #5 was Atari Teenage Riot. They explained that all but Korn have something to do with Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails.

LA Times Article About Interscope; Mentions NIN & Manson

There was a large multi-page article in the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday's (12/14/99) business section about Interscope and namely its president, Tom Whally. There are several NIN references throughout the article as well as Marilyn Manson. The article is about the label president; on how he looks back on the year after PolyGram and Interscope merged, which he discusses the industry's future. Below is a snippet relating to Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson:

Another problem for Interscope is that it has had trouble scoring hits with recent releases by such Geffen and A&M stalwarts as Hole, Sheryl Crow, Guns N' Roses, Sting, Bryan Adams, Counting Crows and Beck. Sales of the latest recordings by those acts have been lackluster and some artists have complained privately that their music is getting second-class treatment under the Interscope umbrella. But that would not account for why expensive projects by such Interscope acts as Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson have also bombed recently.

According to Whalley, the music business has changed dramatically over the last three years.

"No matter how big you are, an artist has to treat every record now like they're starting over," Whalley said. "It's a shocking development, but you can no longer assume that radio is going to play it or that fans are going to buy it. You just can't take anything for granted any more." task facing everybody in this industry is how to come up with new ways to grow this thing."

For those who have always wondered how Interscope grew its roots, read the rest of this article here.

Thanks a lot to: Brian.

Drunk Richard Patrick Adds EXTRA Comments About 'The Fragile'

Joel, an SLS viewer, wrote us to explain, "yesterday, I heard on KNDD 107.7 'The End' a brief snippet of a drunk interview with Richard Patrick of Filter/ex NIN guitarist."

Richard said, "Yeah nin, I was in NIN...that Trent Reznor....yeah, he doesn't write hits with his Fragile..fragul, whatever you wanna call it... I write hits, and does he write hits? No, i write hits!"

"And thus ended any NIN references," adds Joel. "He was drunk so i suppose it couldn't be held against him... I just though this was funny and you might like to have heard about it."

Music Express Sounds Rank NIN #7 In Top 50 Albums of '99

Alice, a German NIN fan who runs a NIN website of her own, which includes live NIN photos from the Düsseldorf performance, informed us that the German music magazine "Music Express Sounds" (December '99) ranks Nine Inch Nails' "The Fragile" #7 on their "Top 50 Albums of '99" issue.

Nine Inch Nails 'The Fragile' is ranked at #7.

"... it was said to be "The Wall" of the 90ies, the word Industrial was mentioned, when people talked about 'The Fragile' ... If you listen closer you even hear porous piano sounds and KISS-samples ... and with 'Starfuckers, Inc.' there is a furious 'clean sweep' with Marilyn Manson and his retinue ... only the paranoid, fear-filling underlying tone still reminds of the last NIN works and is, as always, perfectly put on the mount."

The first 7 are the following: #1 Blur, #2 Flaming Lips, #3 Beck, #4 Pavement, #5 Nightmares on Wax, #6 Moby, #7 Nine Inch Nails. David Bowie's "Hours" is ranked at #21.

Trent Reznor Interivew In Beat Magazine

The Wednesday 15th issue of Beat Magazine, a free weekly newspaper in Melbourne, Australia, features none other than Trent Reznor. We thought we should add that this is the same interview/article that was published in today's newspaper issue of Herald Sun. Unfortunately, the article isn't anything that we've already read, but below is a blurb from the interview about The Downward Spiral tour:

"The tour was a manifestation of the album and the concept behind that record, which was self destruction," he says looking at me squarely with his startlingly green eyes, "and I found myself very much living that role. I wrote a record which was very much a fairy tale, then I lived it. At the end of that tour, which was way too long, I believed the hype. I turned into that person that I've read about in the media. Which surprised me. And I have no desire to go back to that situation."

Marilyn Manson Webcast Highlights

Marilyn Manson announced the title to their forthcoming album, 'In the Shadow of the Valley of Death,' during his online broadcast last night. "We have written over 100 songs that tell the story that will be presented in my upcoming film HOLY WOOD," said Marilyn Manson. "We are recording in parts of Death Valley as well as other undisclosed residences. The band is working with seminal electronic mastermind Bon Harris (Nitzer Ebb) and Dave Sardy (Bark Market, Slayer). I am producing the album. It is being co-produced and mixed by Dave Sardy."

Below is the complete 3-minute video transcript Marilyn Manson gave at 10pm EST last night.

[after a short clip of a few new songs, Manson gives these words...]

"We're introducing today one of the first in many changes on our web site, and I'd like to announce the title of our album is going to be "In the Shadow of the Valley of Death." It contains songs that will hint at the story that will be told in my film "Holy Wood." This will all come out some time next year.

The album is being recorded in various undisclosed locations including Death Valley. This is the final piece of a triptych that I began with Antichrist Superstar. The character of Omega has been disposed of as he was a ruse to lure commercial mall-goers into the web of destruction that I have always planned since the beginning. That's not to say that any songs on Mechanical Animals were not sincere, those were all great songs that I love very much, so, it was just the character I personified was more, uh, was much more of a satire that some people misinterpreted as a reality.

This web site will now be used more frequently, as it will be my only contact with humanity, so, I would expect to see me here on a very regular basis, and I would expect you to learn with me as we learn the changes that are taking here place in the year 2000.

The new symbol that I'll be using to represent myself here on the web site and elsewhere, is the symbol of Mercury. If you're not familiar with it, you'll be seeing it after this message. The symbol is most commonly used in alchemy. It represents both the engin and the prima materia which associated with Adam, the first man, and all these things are major influences in the writing of the new album. I encourage you to do research on these, but from now on you'll recognize me by this symbol and this symbol alone..."

Check out the new Marilyn Manson web design at the official site: marilynmanson.net. Manson's site provides links to his real video broadcast, which includes new music and the message we transcribed above.

Gary Numan Comments About NIN London Gigs He Attended

Gary Numan updated his official news website yesterday, with some awesome comments about both London NIN concerts he attended weeks ago. Included in his update is a photo of Trent Reznor and himself. He also mentions the rumor about him drunk following a NIN concert was not entirely true.

In the last few weeks I've been to shows by The Mission (great), both London shows by Nine Inch Nails (stunning), David Bowie (hmmmm) and Iggy Pop (brilliant). Aftershow parties sprang up from one end of London to the other and I got to meet some very cool people, and some unfortunates but let's not dwell on them. Nine Inch Nails inparticular not only impressed me beyond measure on stage but were also excellent human beings off stage.

Some reports in on-line magazines that I was dancing, at the NIN aftershow, with the Modes Alan Wilder (ex Mode actually) and that he fell backwards over the club PA, not entirely sober, are not entirely true. I wasn't dancing. Another good night though.

Thanks a lot to: mr. moth.

New NIN Radio Interview This Sunday

According to Valerie Pack, her local radio station (Sly 96.6 FM, San Luis Obispo County, California) is broadcasting a live interview with Trent Reznor and the band on Sunday night @ 10:00 PST. I hope to have more information about this soon....

Ginger Fish Thanks Radio Revolution and Manson Fans

Medosa, an SLS viewer, wrote us about he attended the 'Almost Acoustic Christmas' last week and although he didn't get to talk to bassist Danny Lohner of Nine Inch Nails, "I got a chance to speak with Ginger Fish for a while."

"He seemed to be with a group of 4 guys," adds Medosa, "sitting right next to Paige Hailey from Orgy." Everyone was pretty much just sitting around, which Ginger spoke with him for a quick second before he went off with is group.

"Ginger is very quiet," adds Medosa, "and although he didn't say a whole lot, because he was leaving. He did say thanks for the band support to all the fans and of the Radio Revolution people." That was how Medosa and Ginger first met, during the Radio Revolution backstage pass contests.... "He seems really shy, but extrememly nice," comments Medosa.

Medosa believed that there might have been more of the Manson crew there, "but Ginger was the only one that I got to see," explained Medosa.

The Best of 1999: Nine Inch Nails Ranked #4 By Time Magazine

The December 20th issue of Time magazine, now on stands, rates the best of 1999 in 7 categories such as: Movies, Television, Music, Theater, Books, Sports and Technology.

Voted #4, in the music category, is non other than The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails. Here is their review by the magazine most read in the world:

4 NINE INCH NAILS, "The Fragile" (Nothing/Interscope). Into the orgy of urgently escapist pop that ruled music this year, Trent Reznor dropped this monument to loneliness and psychic angst. A powerful and creepily beautiful rock-'n'-roll album, The Fragile brought hope to alienated youth everywhere.
Rage Against The Machine was voted #1 for their latest album "The Battle of Los Angeles," while MTV's "Total Request Live" was voted worst of '99 because they "overplay bad teeny-pop videos and create an atmosphere that drives away viewers who might request more substantial fare."

Thanks a lot to: FIREBUG053.

Senator John McCain Fox News Transcripts About Nine Inch Nails

Anarcha, an SLS viewer who is a law student at Harvard, wrote us about how he has unlimited access to Westlaw and Lexis. (Westlaw and Lexis are databases full of media transcripts) When he jumped onto Westlaw recently, he found transcripts of two Fox News broadcasts of John McCain speaking highly of his favorite band, Nine Inch Nails. One of the transcripts goes to our December 13th update, "Senator John McCain Speaks of Nine Inch Nails", which aired on Fox News December 12th.

Mark Romanek Thanks Trent Reznor & Comments About The Fragile

Mark Romanek, the music video director of "Closer" and "The Perfect Drug" by Nine Inch Nails, wrote in the editorial section at Amazon.com about his new book "Mark Romanek: Music Video Stills." He mentioned how he loves working with Trent Reznor and also commented that The Fragile is "mind-blowing" and that he would love to work with him again. This is what he had to say:

The author, Mark Romanek , December 8, 1999
Mentioning some of my favorite artists.
Throughout my directing career, I have had the pleasure of working with many amazing and ingenious artists. I consider all of them very talented and it was a pleasure and an honor to work with them. I must take this opportunity to say that my two favorite artists I have directed are Madonna and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. In my mind the two are very much connected. Not in the musical sense, but in the fact that both have been around for such a long time and matured over the years. Each album of theirs demonstrates a different stage in each of theirs growths, musically and personally. That is what music should be about, in my opinion, growth. I'd also like to say that Trent's new album is mind-blowing. Some of the works on 'The Fragile' are so well crafted that videos are not needed. Now that is not to say I wouldn't love to work with Trent in the future. I would and, well, who knows? I hope that those of you who come across the book will enjoy it and I hope I can convey in these shots what I was trying to convey in the videos themselves.

Thanks a lot to: AntiTrend.

Two tracks from Clint's forthcoming album are being distributed to certain people as demos. The two tracks, "Atlantic Crossing" (formerly titled "The Bug") and "Flatliners" were recorded at nothing studios with Keith Hillebrandt in November. "Atlantic Crossing" has already been played on UK Radio last Monday on Mary-Anne Hobbs' show "The Breezeblock". Senator John McCain Speaks of Nine Inch Nails

I woke up with my TV blaring yesterday morning and quickly noticed Senator John McCain, who is running for president, briefly talking about Nine Inch Nails. Unfortunately scrambling for a video cassette to record and upload to SLS News I missed the entire discussion. Thankfully, another viewer who saw this special report yesterday on Fox News with John McCain wrote us this morning with the details.

Yesterday on Fox new there was an interview on "Special Report" with John McCain. McCain was asked who his favorite rock band was, which he replied, "Nine Inch Nails." Tony Snow, the interviewer, then responded by putting some lyrics up from "Starfuckers Inc." He asked McCain about the vulgar language and if NIN was still his favorite. McCain replied that he was obviously kidding and making a point on the obvious gap between children and adults.
If you recall from our December 1st headline, "The NIN Political Party" John McCain told The New Yorker (December 6, 1999 issue) that he would consider inviting Nine Inch Nails to his inaugural.

Thanks a lot to: Jack Brimhall.

Danny Lohner Attends 'Almost Acoustic Christmas' Special

Friday, December 11th was the 10th annual KROQ sponsored "Almost Acoustic Christmas," with major performing acts such as Tori Amos, Rob Zombie, Foo Fighters, 311, Beck, Powerman 5000 and Fiona Apple to just name a few.

Among all the guests and artists who performed or attended that night at the Arrowhead pond in Anaheim, CA, was the awesome Nine Inch Nails bassist Danny Lohner. Nicole, an SLS reader who has been a major nails fan for nearly 4 years now, wrote us yesterday to explain what happened when she caught up with Mr. Lohner standing in a concession line. Although hungry for food, Danny Lohner had a mouthful to say about next years tour, the new "Into The Void" video and a half hour MTV/NIN tour special.

"I attended the 'Almost Acoustic Christmas' special last night at the Arrowhead pond in Anaheim, and I had an interesting experience," writes Nicole. "My best friend and I were sitting in the section just up from the pit and we stayed at the show until Rob Zombie came on, which he then jumped off the stage and came to our row." Without thinking twice, the two girls quickly ran over and jumped into the pit to mosh with him. Soon after their rump with Rob Zombie and the completion of their set, Nicole and her friend were so exhausted from the excitement they left the arena. "There wasn't a chance in hell we were going to suffer through Blink 182," she adds.

"Anyway, since we were thirsty, we went to the concession stand to get a drink and who did we see in line there? of course non other than Danny Lohner." Nicole and her friend immediately began to think of a way to meet him without weirding him out, "So we just told him that we had made a bet against one another if he was the guy from Nine Inch Nails," adds Nicole, "and of course he said 'ya,' which then put us into an even deeper state of utter disbelief." So she then said to Lohner, "I thought you guys were still in Europe," which Lohner replies, "Well, we just got back today." Lohner then explained to Nicole and her friend that they had just finished shooting the video for 'Into the Void' last week in London, and how they recorded a half-hour special for MTV about their Fragility tour. (Please read our November 30th headline "Concert Reviews/Taped NIN Show Broadcast Update" and our November 28th headline "Upcoming NIN/MTV Tour Collaboration For USA?" for more information about what was recorded for the MTV/NIN tour special.) "Then I couldn't help myself by asking, 'Trent's not here by any chance', which he said 'no,'" explained Nicole. "He laughed a little when he saw the NIN patch on my friends purse," adds Nicole, "and then proceeded by giving us his autograph." Lohner also mentioned to the girls that NIN was supposed to be playing around Anaheim right now, "all over this area of California before Christmas," said Nicole, "but they all got canceled for several reasons such as cost and what not." Lohner then adds that they are probably going to be playing around there in February or March. "Then there was the usual 'nice to meet you, I'll be at your show type stuff,'" adds Nicole, "and I apologized for coming up to him like that cause I'm sure he's gotten that a lot," which he adds, "Actually, no people keep asking me if I'm the guitarist for Rob Zombie."

MTV Poorly Rates The Fragile By Sales Only

Unfortunately, MTV have ranked Nine Inch Nails' The Fragile as one of the year's albums that have "tanked," while indulging that fact that Cher, Lenny Kravitz and Whitney Houston all had great successes. Considering The Fragile has only been in the hands of fans for nearly 90 days, there hasn't been much of a strong media impact to fully sell the record, besides the fact Trent Reznor has been on the cover of nearly every North American and foreign music magazine in the first 4 months since its release. Surprisingly, you would think this kind of major media coverage, plus the back-to-back radio interviews Trent Reznor held throughout America would make a difference...

Although this album is critically acclaimed by 9 out of 10 magazines, MTV base their "tanked" report by soundscan sales only. Nevermind the fact The Fragile was voted album of the year by SPIN Magazine, never mind the fact The Fragile has reached platinum status, never mind the fact the Fragile had a sold out European tour nor the fact The Fragile did debut #1 on the Billboard 200 (considering The Downward Spiral debuted #2 in '94).

Now does this really justify a record, to only judge it by record sales? Sadly, some people think this is the best way... Although MTV had just enough airtime to bring out the negative aspects of the album, they totally left out what positive feedback The Fragile has earned or what potential this album has in the future... Thankfully the Grammy awards look a little promising.

Year In Rock translation: unless you sell a gazillion records. Your CD is no good. We'll just see what heads turn once NIN tours North America.

Thanks a lot to: Scott Roberts, FIREBUG053, Maria.

Ken West, BDO Organizer, Speaks Highly of Nine Inch Nails

In the free street mag Sydney Scope, Ken West, organizer of the Big Day Out, had some interesting stuff to about Nine Inch Nails:

Q: As far as procuring acts for the Big Day Out goes, is there a thrill in the chase? Does it have that romanticism for you?

A: Yeah, well kind of. The Chemical Brothers is the thing that has taken us five years. Probably the most annoying one is that we've got Nine Inch Nails on now but unfortunately I don't know if there's enough people out there who have got the wherewithal to realize what they're getting. They go "yeah... Nine Inch Nails", I mean that show's just gonna blow the lid off the place. He's bringing 27 people with him (laughs). It's a very big show; it's just that he's been quiet for a while.

Thanks a lot to: danm.

Trent Reznor Graces The Cover of Visions Magazine + New Manson & Twiggy Interviews

Although Nine Inch Nails are now home from overseas, European magazines such as the new January issue of "Visions" magazines, who incidentally co-sponsored NIN's Germany concerts, are soon to be hot on stands featuring Trent Reznor on the cover of this 6 page article/interview. The German magazine includes a review of the Duesseldorf concert, as well as quotes from David Bowie, Alice Cooper and Flea (each with a photo) telling us what they think of NIN, and of course the interview with Trent, which we'll have transcribed in English soon. The entire interview comes with 5 new photos.

In the "letters to the editor" section of the same magazine, a reader wrote about how "The Fragile" was completely overrated in "Visions" last issue (they gave the record a top rating). "I wouldn't even have seen this letter," writes Sabrina, "if it hadn't been for the pretty large and nice, if I might add, face shot of Trent Reznor next to it."

Finally, "Visions" also had their own countdown of the 100 best albums of the 90's. Nine Inch Nails placed at #18 with The Downward Spiral including a fairly lengthy caption about the record (FYI: Red Hot Chili Peppers claims the #1 spot with BloodSugarSexMagik).

The magazine will be available in Germany and some other parts of Europe, Dec. 15th.

Among the many other articles in this magazine are three mentions of Marilyn Manson. The first mention is in the beginning, and comes with a photo of Manson, lying on a bed half-naked. They talk about the live record, the Euro MTV award show and the fact that MM won't be appearing alongside Rose McGowan in "Ready to Rumble". Apparently Manson also refused to talk about the upcoming documentary/biography "Demystifying the Devil" in Eruope, which apparently shows him making fun of obese and handicapped people, having oral sex with a guy and feeding a rabbit to his pet snake.

Then, there's a 4-page article/interview with Twiggy Ramirez, which includes 2 large photos of him. Two quotes, which were used as titles/headers: "My mother had the biggest influence on my life. She was cooler and more rock'n' roll than I'll ever be"; and "of course drugs have been the triggers for some of the precarious situations in our band. But on the other hand, this band wouldn't exist without drugs". He also says that the people he admires most are: "Dave Wyndorf, from Monster Magnet, James Hetfield from Metallica and Marilyn Manson for their musical achievements. George Lucas for creating Star Wars." He mentions his mother several times throughout the interview, saying that his parents sometimes go out for dinner with Manson's parents. Then: "I grew up with my mother, who has always been very liberal. Manson's parents only accepted him the way he is, when he became successful." They continue to talk about his childhood (he had a very happy one), about whether he'll want to have kids, and of course the Littleton mess.

Finally, Marilyn Manson placed #37 in the countdown mentioned above. The caption states, that rock music became "shocking" and meant showbiz again, then goes on to say that despite the visual and shock-factor aspect of Marilyn Manson, they're incredibly talented musicians.

Thanks a lot to: sabrina.

Samples of Rare Charlie Clouser Remix

Morpheus TechnoPagan, has put together real audio excerpts of two rare "BURNING RETINA" tracks at "Charlie Clouser - The Remix Files."

To take a quick listen to the rare remix files by Charlie Clouser jump on over to the "Collaborations" section and click on the "BURNING RETINA" button to hear 40 sec. intro of "Master X" and "Write My Name In Blood."

Based in Los Angeles, BURNING RETINA (1993-1995) was a studio project that allowed its members to experiment with dark electronics, which they later utilized in future endeavors...

The band consisted indeed of Charlie Clouser on drums / programming and keyboards, who later became a permanent member of Nine Inch Nails, Sean Beavan on bass and programming, who later engineered and produced a number of releases by NIN and Marilyn Manson, Mick Cripps (ex-L.A. Guns) on guitars and actor Chris Bradshaw on vocals.

It is rumored that future plans may even include the release of a complete collection of BURNING RETINA material by Cleopatra records... or perhaps Nothing records.

The The Concert Review

Taken from the December 1st issue of the Philadelphia Weekly on page 37 is a The The concert review, which has been transcribed for you all below:

THE THE
Thursday, Dec. 2, 10pm,
Upstage, 22 S. Third Street

In the annals of alternative rock, The The ranks as one of the greater artistic success stories. Essentially the alter ego of master- mind Matt Johnson, this loose collective of musicians and techno conceptualists has been releasing albums since 1981. The basic sound is closest to that of electronica, with plenty of synthesizers and a fair share of hypnotic rhythm tracks. Within that context, however, Johnson has been able to experiment with avant-garde noise, chiming pop and even his own whacked take on the country music of Hank Williams Sr. It's a broad vision that offers many points of entry and seems end- lessly fascinating once the listener has been drawn in. Of course, that happens infrequently; Johnson is a notorious perfectionist who takes four to five years between projects and almost never tours. Indeed, this show is part of his first set of concerts since 1993. The tour is intended as a preview of his forthcoming disc, NAKEDSELF (NOTHING), which is due in January and features former Iggy Pop guitarist Eric Schermerhorn. Said to be Johnson's most band-oriented effort in well over a decade, the album bodes well for this show, which should also feature material from all phases of a compelling, enigmatic career. -Ramsay Pennypacker

The new The The album hits the American streets on February 14th.

Thanks a lot to: crystal.

Tapeworm News, 30 Tracks Recorded For Next NIN Album and More

The December 11th issue of Kerrang! magazine featuring Trent Reznor on the front cover is now on stands in the UK. The news section of this brand new issue breaks down Tapeworm, the Nine Inch Nails side project, a bit more than what we've read in the past.

Charlie Clouser explained that we'll hear the band within the next 12 months. They might appear on the b-side to a Nothing Records release or even a movie soundtrack! Danny Lohner reveals that they have three tracks completed, along with a clutch of instrumentals.

"We did some really heavy NIN-meets-Pantera stuff with Phil Anselmo" says Lohner. "We also did some mellow Pink-Floyd "The Wall"-type songs with him where he actually sings."

"The stuff we did with Maynard [James Keenan from Tool] has very psychedelic, groove-oriented verses and anthemic choruses." Page Hamilton has also already been involved. "Tapeworm's music is electronic with big guitars, beats and melodic yet aggressive vocals," says Lohner. "It's something that Trent will bring up every couple of weeks - and every couple of months we'll do some work on it."

We also get a NIN interview that touches base on a bit more information on the tour and such. It was conducted in Copenhagen before their performance that night. Below are a few excepts from the interview
"What I'm looking forward to on the next phase of this tour is getting deeper into the new record. A number of the tracks had a lot of arms to them and paths that we turned down to make them sit on the record right. That really could open itself up to being interpreted live. And we're good enough band to do it."
Kerrang also ask if he checked out the competition, which Trent replied, "Some things I do. There hasn't been much that's really blown me away. The Filter record I've got and I like. Richard is still a really good friend of mine, so I don't look at that as the competition as much as a contemporary doing his thing. What he's doing is good."

With in the interview are a few short interviews with the other mastermind geniouses of Nine Inch Nails: Charlie Clouser, Jerome Dillon, Robin Finck and Danny Lohner. Here are a few extracts from the interview that are worth mentioning...

Jerome Dillon - "The last drummer (Chris Vrenna) got craned upside his head with a mike-stand in San Francisco. So I was planning on showing up in a football helmet."

Danny Lohner - "...there's a lot of material for the next record alrady recorded - there's at least thirty songs."

There's also a live review of the Brixton Academy gig on Nov 29th. They give the show four K's out of five, losing a K for Atari Teenage Riot.

Thanks a lot to: Delameko Stone.

SPIN Editor Praises The Fragile On German TV

Sabrina, who informed us yesterday about the German WOM Magazine, is back again with some kewl news she'd like to share while watching the tube last night. "I thought I'd mention that NIN was actually featured in the evening news here in Germany, on RTL and RTL II," explained Sabrina. "The segment came towards the end of the news broadcast, the "news" being the new issue of SPIN."

"The anchorwoman started out saying that the magazine had done its annual rundown of the year's best albums/bands etc," adds Sabrina, "and that surprisingly enough '99 hadn't been a year for hip-hop or rap (according to SPIN), but heavier rock music." Sabrina explained, "They immediately went straight into the NIN part, showing parts of the WITT video, while commenting on Trent's return to the music scene and how "The Fragile" was considered the best record of the year."

They then ran a short clip of an interview with Alan Light, the editor of SPIN, "who talked about the success of 'The Fragile' why it's such a great album," adds Sabrina "and what makes it different from the other stuff that was released this year."

Following the show, segments of Rage Against The Machine (for band of the year) and TLC were aired. "Overall the segments weren't that long," adds Sabrina, but I thought it was interesting, if not surprising that something in SPIN could make the news, considering the magazine isn't even available in the German language (unlike Rolling Stone)."

Rip It Up Interview: NIN Related Quake III News, Female Singer Details For NIN Project & More!

We were informed yesterday that Trent Reznor graces the cover of yet another magazine called "Rip It Up." This is a very interesting and extensive interview, which Trent talks about many large topics. Below are a few excerpts...

On October 15th, (read our headline "Trent Reznor Submits Tracks For Quake III" for more info) we were informed from an insider at ID Software that Trent Reznor submitted a few tracks to ID for the upcoming Quake III video game. Unfortunately, the tracks never became of anything... more like samples.... Here's an excerpt from the article.

G. You have done some amazing soundtrack work, Is that an area you would like to pursue more?

T. On the Fragile I realised that when I work on tracks I automatically create a visual scene or image in my head and then just dress the set with music, I try really hard to work on the mood and flavour. What I would probably find the most artistically satisfying right now if David Cronenburg called me up and said "score a film, don't put pop music in it, actually score it." I would drop what I'm doing and see if I could do it. ID software, the guys I did Quake for asked me to work on Quake 3 but it was kinda like rock songs and it didn't interest me, I told them if you're ever going to do something that's interactive and dark and you need a real soundtrack then let me know. I would not do another lost highway, I'm tired of that. There's a whorish nature to putting pop music on a soundtrack, just to make a compilation record to sell. With Natural Born Killers, the use of music as a collage really intrigued me, it was a lot of work and I'm really proud of that one.

To this date the official Nine Inch Nails website here is still in search for that perfect female vocalist since October 15th, which Trent later explained, "I am starting a new project that will involve someone else singing, probably involved lyrically and most likely female. This is not in place of NIN, I just have a lot of extra material and ideas that I'm excited to try in a different situation," on his discussion board that she is for an undisclosed, upcoming side project, which was later thought up by the press to be used during the world tour. (Read our October 21st headline "Search For Female Singer To Not Sing On Nine Inch Nails Tour" for more info.)

Trent Reznor gave a little more information about this extra project, by explaining how this lucky female will actually use her god given talent by singing sounds more than words. Judging by his answer, he seems pretty excited to get moving!

"We have another band that is made up of the guys in NIN and it's called tapeworm. We're going to finish that record and I really want to start another project with a female vocalist. I've got a lot of extra material left over from The Fragile which I really like but I won't find myself motivated to go and write lyrics for it, I would like to juxtapose it with a very soulful type of vocalist, without being safe, a real collision of genres and sounds.

Gear Magazine - 100 Albums of the Century!

Rolling Stone Millennium Issue Featuring Trent Reznor

Rolling Stone, in its December 30th/Jan 6th issue, celebrates the end of the century by holding a "Party 2000." There, it asks 150 "thinkers, rockers, movers and shakers" to comment on advice, resoulutions, predictions, influences, whatever. Trent is among the interviewees, and his comments are about Littleton, responsibility for people who are affected by his lyrics, etc.

Here's the transcript:

Sometimes I get asked, "Do you feel responsible abot what you put out lyrically?" or "What are your thoughts on censorship?" I've always said, based on my own head, "Give people the benefit of the doubt. Give them credit to think for themselves." Nobody has the right to say, "Hey, I'm telling you what you can and cannotsee, because I know better than you." That's ridiculous. I feel, "Yeah, empower the individual." And then you turn on the news and you see some new idiot who kills kids in a church, and my argument goes out the window. It's troubling.

CULTURAL EVENT:
There's something about the way the media descend on a place like Littleton, the way the reporters look, the way people are so aware of the cameras, the whole relationship between violence and celebrity, the really captures something about where we are right now.

BIGGEST INFLUENCES
I remember listening to David Bowie when I was a kid, and it seemed like you never knew what he was going to do next. There's a restlessness in him, a willingness to try new things. That's what it always seemed to me that artists should be like. He's still that way, and he continues to be an inspriration.

Thanks a lot to: Holly Bailey.

Trent Reznor Graces The Cover of Kerrang! Magazine

The latest issue of Kerrang! magazine now on stands in the UK, featuring new photos and and large interview with questions about the tour, friendship, music biz and more... Below are the scanned photos and and an excerpt from the interview:

Kerrang!: You have to surrender total control of NIN on tour. Is that difficult? Reznor: "No. Because when we started off NIN in 1990, it was an experiment in taking music that was done on a computer in the studio and seeing how you could present it live. It didn't need to sound the same. And when we got done with 'Pretty Hate Machine' it was way better live than on record. The instrumentation a guitarist, drummer, keyboard player and myself was meant to add aggression and make a show that people could see and go, 'Fuck! I didn't expect that!'. The last thing I wanted to do was to have two guys with a drum pad and a tape.

"The musicianship of the band now is such that I don't have to ride people as I did way back. The drummer's excellent, Charlie's being utilised a lot more than he ever has it makes for a lot less work for me. There's respect there both ways, I think. Some things sound like the records, some don't. What I'm looking forward to on the next phase of this tour is getting deeper into the new record. A number of the tracks had a lot of arms to them and paths that we turned down to make them sit on the record right. That really could open itself up to being interpreted live. And we're a good enough band to do it."

Thanks a lot to: Mr Pogo.

Kim Prevost, Back Up NIN Singer, Performs Friday

For those who are interested, and might be in the New Orleans area on a really board Friday, December 10th night, Kim Prevost will be singing at the St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square at 8pm central time. This is in The French Quarter in New Orleans. She was the backup vocals on "Into The Void." In case anyone reading might have wondered what she actually sounded like, here's your chance to find out!

Thanks a lot to: pla_stic.

Walter Stern Directs "Into The Void" Video

"After wrapping up a string of European dates, Nine Inch Nails hooked up with director Walter Stern in London to shoot a new video last week," writes MTV News Online.

Trent Reznor and company lensed a clip for "Into The Void," the second single from the band's critically acclaimed album, "The Fragile." The video is expected to make its debut on MTV before the end of the year.

Stern is perhaps best known as the man behind The Prodigy's "Firestarter" and "Breathe" videos. He has also directed videos for Massive Attack, Moby, and INXS.

For NIN, the video shoot was the last matter of business on a European trip that saw the band play to sold-out houses for two weeks.

Here's a quick bio on the new NIN video director:

Born in 1965 in England to an American mother and a British father of German origin. Between 1985 and 1988, he was educated at Bournemouth Film School, a most prestigious college for the development of visual skills and techniques. Stern began directing commercials, then moved on to music videos in 1990. His imaginative and highly unusual promos exhibit a sense of drama, and claustrophobia. MTV refused to play Pleasant Smell (12 Rounds), a Bad Boy Bubby lookalike short film, complete with rotten fruit and vegetables, but weeks later made Firestarter one of the most played videos, same thing next year with Bitter Sweet Symphony. Breathe won two MTV Awards in 1997 (Viewers Choice Best Video in both Europe and USA).
Here is a list of artists Stern has directed:
Manic Street Preachers: Stay Beautiful (1991), Moby: Hymn (1994), Prodigy: No Good (1994) Prodigy: Voodoo People (1994), Marusha: Raveland (1994), Prodigy: Poison (1995), Faith No More: Evidence (1995), Menswear: Daydreamer (1995), The Chemical Brothers: Life Is Sweet (1995)12 Rounds: Pleasant Smell (1996), Prodigy: Firestarter (1996), Mansun: Take It Easy Chicken (1996), Prodigy: Breathe (1996), INXS: Elegantly Wasted (1997), The Verve: Bitter Sweet Symphony (1997), Massive Attack: Risingson (1997), Massive Attack: Tear Drop (1998), Massive Attack: Angel (1998), Madonna: Drowned World/Substitute For Love (1998)

Manson To Reveal New Album LIVE From Inside Their Studios

Marilyn Manson fans, make sure your schedule is free on December 15th, because Marilyn Manson will reveal the title and details of his forthcoming album at the official Marilyn Manson website in an exclusive live broadcast with a preview of the revamped official website.

"This message will be transmitted from within the studio," says the official Manson News website, "where a glimpse of the recording process will be seen and heard."

Regarding the project and the website Manson stated, "Mishandled fear bred pop consumerism, a fear to fit in. Diabolical fear bred religion and all those that cower before it and die in its guilt-inspired name. Together, we hold their greatest fear of all knowledge. That is, knowing it is us that will destroy the world, not them."

Marilyn Manson told Alternative Press in their January '00 issue that this new record will also set the stage for Manson's feature film, "Holy Wood," slated for release sometime next year. Read our December 4th headline "'It's Probably The Darkest And Most Violent Music We've Ever Done' Marilyn Manson" for more information.

WITT Singles Arrives To Weathermen Records This Friday

It's been rough the past few weeks concerning the "We're In This Togehter" single... Fortunately, The Weathermen sent us an update yesterday on the status of the long awaited "We're In This Together" three CD set that everyone has been waiting patiently on...

"The CD's are now in route to our packing facility" says the Weathermen, "and will arrive to us this Friday (Dec 10th) and we will be shipping them out the same day (Friday Dec 10th) as well." Weathermen Records further explained that, "most of you should expect them on Monday in the United States, Tuesday at the latest." "Foreign orders do take longer based on your country of origin," explained Weathermen Records. "All original orders will be honored." As you can see from our earlier articles, the delay was not due to Weathermen Music. The Weathermen then added, "We will take every step to ship the fastest we possibly can."

New NIN Interview On VIVA II

"There was a so-called piece about Nine Inch Nails during the show "2ROCK" on the German music channel VIVA II on the 6th of December," explained Jakob Straub, who was watching.

We were informed that Trent made a few remarks about the Fragile, how it's attention demanding music and modern art is like "feeding the cattle". He also said that since Pretty Hate Machine, songwriting meant for him to turn his inside feelings out, and that sometimes he was giving away too much of himself for the sake of art, but in general, it has helped him to get on better terms with himself. The final comment was about how the band evolved into "something... I dunno, maybe more healthier", and how Trent likes to receive feedback on his work.

"The interesting part," explained Straub, "were the song & video excerpts: Closer & March of the Pigs featured bits from the video clips, and during Pilgrimage, you could see images of burnt or wounded soldiers. La Mer showed a great ocean wave, and the StarfuckersInc." The program even showed magazine photographs and covers of Trent Reznor.

Trent Reznor Interview In German WOM Magazine

Sabrina, an SLS viewer, wrote in yesterday to explain that a German music chain WOM publishes a free monthly magazine similar to the Tower Records issue of "Pulse!" magazine. The December issue of WOM magazine features a rock special on none other than Nine Inch Nails.

"There's a one page article on NIN (with a picture)," explained Sabrina, "as well as [a] one-page article on couple of others (including David Bowie)." Although the article repeats it self from past interviews, "Trent talks about having his programmers sample killer bees," added Sabrina "and how he lives in a dream world."

Trent Graces The Cover Of New Zealand Magazine Called "Rip It Up"

Michael James, another SLS viewer, wrote us this morning to explain that while he was looking at some magazines today, "I noticed that Trent Reznor has graced the cover of the most popular music magazine in New Zealand called 'Rip It Up'."

"The cover showed the pic of Trent with his face dripping wet over a basin," added Michael, "and the journalist claims to have the only exclusive New Zealand Nine Inch Nails interview with Trent." The issue covers two pages, "which Trent was interviewed the morning after his Munich show over the telephone," explained Michael.

We're told there are a couple of new photos, and not much new to say except that Trent was glad now he had the financial backing to be able to market the album outside America.

"The journalist also asked him if he missed his two dogs to which Trent replied, "Yes very much I had only been thinking about them earlier."

Michael then adds, "The magazine also came with a bonus CD with around 10 tracks (Not containing music from NIN), but it is bound to be a very popular issue for only NZ$3 (approx. US$1.50).

We will have the transcript online soon.

Possibly A Twilight Zone NIN Reference

Affluenza, an SLS viewer, wrote us an interesting observation recently. Although his thoughts were a mere comment, maybe NIN fans who also read the same short story might have thought that there could be a NIN reference to a particular track off The Fragile...?

"I own a twilight zone book that has some old scripts and short stories," explained Affluenza, "and one of them is called 'Where Is Everybody?'" "I remember hearing that Trent owns a collection of TZ movies, so maybe there's a connection," continued Affluenza.

The The Article In The Boston Globe

The The is mentioned in the December 6th issue of the Boston Globe. The article can be found in the Living/Arts section. Below is the article:

The Genuine Article

We've long been fans of The The, but in the very rational, somewhat aloof way best reserved for temperamental geniuses who tend to blow off their CD release dates and turn out a mind-bending album a couple of times each decade. The The, brainchild of the occasionally dissolute, usually tortured, and nearly always brilliant Matt Johnson, has had a host of incarnations in the almost 20 years since its birth. It teamed up for a while in the early 1990s with former Smiths' guitarist Johnny Marr and now counts former Iggy Pop bandmate Eric Schermerhorn and MC 900 Fr. Jesus drummer Earl Harvin among its members. As part of a warm-up tour for its soon-to-be-released "NakedSelf," The The plays a much-anticipated show tonight at the Middle East downstairs. Reflecting Skin opens. Doors open at 8. Tickets, if you can find them, are $15.

As you should already know, The The is the latest band to be signed by Nothing Records.

Thanks a lot to: Smith.

Trent to Remix Songs Off Bowie's 'Hours'

According to Maarten Kwant, an SLS viewer who spoke with Trent Reznor following the Tilburg, Holland performance on November 28th, asked if he was gonna work with David Bowie again. Trent explained to Maarten that Bowie asked him to remix a couple of songs from "Hours," which Trent agreed to do so following his tour. Maarten then adds that he is "going to choose a couple of songs, but not 'The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell', which is the hardest track off the album."

What do you think Trent should remix? Listed below are the 10 track titles found on Bowie's latest opus, "Hours..." In fact downloadable mpeg samples can be heard here at CDnow.

"Thursday's Child," "Something In The Air," "Survive," "If I'm Dreaming My Life," "Seven," "What's Really Happening," "The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell," "New Angels Of Promise," "Brilliant Adventure," "The Dreamers."

This is a one page interview with Trent Reznor from the January 2000 UK edition of FHM magazine. Trent tells some interesting tales, which include some extra detail about Amber Appelbaum, the 22 year old who posed as Trent's wife by hacking into Trent's persoanl AOL accounts. (Read our May 30th '98 headline "Woman Caught Using Trent's Online Account" for more info.)

Here 's an excerpts from the article:

"...Last year, I had an insane fan who was stalking me. She was doing weird things - like listening to or erasing the messages on my answer machine. We found out that she'd worked out my machine access code simply by dialling a hundred different numbers until she got it. She'd even found my credit card number, called thephone company and pretended to be my wife."

Explanation Why The NIN KISS Cover "Love Gun" Never Saw The Light

In the section called "The Unheard Music (The best music you've never heard)" in the current Alternative Press issue now on stands features a picture of Trent Reznor screaming into a mic from the making of the 'Fragile' and an article about Trent Reznor's KISS cover of "Love Gun" for the KISS tribute album that was never recorded.

Nine Inch Nails - "Love Gun"

The News Desk might have run out and bought a copy of the Gene Simmons-coordinated Kiss tribute album, Kiss My Ass, has NIN mainman Trent Reznor brought the noise to the painted rockers' snake riding celebration and recorded "Love Gun." Reznor had all the best intention to contribute to the 1994 tribute album, but got completely swamped with the creation of The Downward Spiral, and not one note of the song was ever committed to tape. So, NIN collectors, if somebody tells you he or she has a bootleg of T. Rez rockin' it out Kiss-style, tell that person to put a real gun in or her mouth.

The Fragile is listed on the 1999 most essential albums of all time. Autechre's EP7 is also featured which is on Nothing.

The Fragile remains #1 as TDS is still #10 on AP reader's Top 10

Thanks a lot to: Diseased Angel.

"It's Probably The Darkest And Most Violent Music We've Ever Done" Marilyn Manson

Marilyn Manson is also featured in this same Alternative Press issue for the special report on "25.4.Y2K" upcoming albums for 2000. It's a whole page photo of him with a bald head, and ruby red lipstick and the article reads:

Marilyn Manson
Album Title: TBA
Release Date: Spring 2000, on nothing/Interscope
What Can We Expect? There's not much music that inspires Marilyn Mnason these days, so he found creative fuel for his new album in decidely non-rock sources. "I spent time in Death Valley; time at Trinity, the site where the first atomic bomb was detonated. I visited Prague and was able to bring back absinthe. I spent time with (director) Kenneth Anger, and I got to meet (Swiss painter) H.R. Giger, who is inspirational in a lot of ways." All of these experiences stimulated 35 songs that Manson produced with engineer Dave Sardy (Re Hot Chilli Peppers, Helmet). "It's probably the darkest and most violent music we've ever done," he says. "We took the melodic rock arrangements on Mechanical Animals and combined them with the more nihilistic appraoch that Antichrist Superstar had. The Synthesis of the two is beautiful." The record will also set the stage for Manson's feature film Holy Wood, slated for release sometime next year. "The film will be my legiitimate attempt to combine something with musical excitement-like The Wall-with artistic symbolism of films by such people as Luis Bunuel, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Anger," he explains. "But it'll probably come out like Can't Hardly Wait." [JP] Photo by P.R. Brown and Marilyn Manson

Weird Al Performs 'Germs' (NIN Parody) On His TV Program

Weird Al, who creates parodies of songs identical to the originals, wrote a song called 'Germs' in the style of Nine Inch Nails. This parody of "Closer" and "Terrible Lie," found on his latest album "Running With Scissors," was performed during his half-hour childrens program called 'Altv' on Saturday morning. Weird Al had even made the effort to wear all black and wet his hair down to look like Trent Reznor. "It was pretty funny," adds Jason Vowell, who saw the program "and he even did justice to the original songs. "My girlfriend taped the show," which comments again that the video "was pretty damn funny."

Jason Vowell, who is also the music Director at 89.1 FM WVJC in Mt. Carmel, Illinois added that they held a vote asking folks who the band of the millennium was. Fortunately, the results came back respectively positive! "We are a College station," explained Jason, "so we sent out some fliers asking people to name the 'Band of The Millennium.' None other than Nine Inch Nails were voted in. So we will be holding "FRAGILE FRIDAY'S" all through December, giving away copies of the CD, and also posters and t-shirts."

Thanks a lot to: Jason.

Kerrang! WITT Single Review & NIN/Manson Mentions

In the December 4th issue of Kerrang! magazine are a few NIN and Manson mentions in the 200 Albums for the year 2000. There are a number of categories with 10 to 20 albums in each. An album is never repeated in more than one category.

Essential 90's Section

06. NINE INCH NAILS - The Downward Spiral
17. MARILYN MANSON - Antichrist Superstar

Essential Industrial Section

4. NINE INCH NAILS - Pretty Hate Machine

Also in the same issue there is a short review of the "We're In This Together" single.
NINE INCH NAILS
We're In This Together
(Nothing/Interscope)

KKKK (out of 5)

The album version of this song is almost seven minutes long. The single edit has been shaved down substantially but still weighs in at a radio- unfriendly five minutes plus. The stunning 'Head Like A Hole' aside, Nine Inch Nails have never really been a singles band - and indeed, this song works better in the context of the album, but it is still able to stand alone as a shining example of Trent Reznor's craft.

And craft it is. Reznor is an artisan, carefully piecing his music together as opposed to just opening the floodgates like Amen. The result is a track that is instantly recognisable as Nine Inch Nails. There's the dark, pulsing beat, the exemplary use of meancing dynamics and the perfect production. What you won't find are any surprises - but while NIN are at times a little formulaic, the formula they stick to is superb.

The reason they site Amen is because it got single of the week.

Thanks a lot to: Delameko Stone.

Manson's Home Video Ranks Top 10 For 3 Weeks

The weekly charts for the nation's most popular videos as they appear in the December 11th, 1999 issue of Billboard magazine reads Marilyn Manson's "God Is In The TV" home video compilation is still hanging on to the top 10 after 3 strait weeks!

1. "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," New Line Home Video.
2. "Big Daddy," Columbia TriStar.
3. "The Blair Witch Project," Artisan Entertainment.
4. "Saving Private Ryan," Dreamworks Home Entertainment.
5. "Yellow Submarine," MGM/UA Home Video.
6. "Playboy 2000-Video Playmate Calendar," Playboy Home Video.
7. "The Mummy," Universal Studios.
8. "The Wizard Of Oz," Warner Family Entertainment.
9. "Sarah McLachlan: Mirrorball," BMG Video.
10. "Marilyn Manson: God Is In The TV," Marilyn Manson. Interscope Video.

Thanks a lot to: Scott.

New WITT Single Ad/Release Date

The 'We're In This Together' advertisement, shown on right, similar to the ad here, which we posted on our November 24th headline, "Three Part NIN Single Delayed Because Of Manufacturer Error." The difference, as you can see, is the ad features the correct date, which Weathermen informed a week ago when their full shipment is to be imported.

As you already know, the tripple single has been out amongts the many music outlets in Eruope since last week, but last minute reports say the WITT video is not included on the third disc...

Thanks a lot to: William.

Rock 'N' Folk Trent Reznor Interview

We have translated the entire December issue of "Rock 'n' Folk" magazine from French into English, which as we said on December 1st (read our headline "The Lost NIN Tracks To Be Released On an EP Or Upcoming Singles" for more info) Trent discussed how The Fragile was nearly a triple CD and that he also believed if it wasn't for all the cut tracks, The Fragile would have been released next year.

Other than remix album/single news... Trent discuseed to Rock 'n' folk what tracks they decided to keep as well as which ones to cut... Here's a small excerpt.

"What can unfortunately also lead to plagiarism as on 'Just Like You Imagine', which could have easily been taken its place on Bowie album. Hum, that only allow me to make a light wink to 'Outside' and to collect its environment. But I did not do that voluntarily. This title on which find Mike garson and Adrian revêt in my eyes an unquestionable interest in the final table of 'The Fragile'."

SPIN Photos Online

David, an SLS viewer, wrote us yesterday to say that on his website 'Fountain Of Decay' are 50 Trent Reznor photos from the many interviews, including three new SPIN magazines photos. Very phat photos....

Soundscan, Billboard, RIAA Questions Answered About "Units" And Double Albums

NINXPX, an SLS viewer and news contributor, wrote us today with some note worthy information about a letter he recently sent Soundscan about the whole Soundscan, Billboard, RIAA, what-does-platinum-mean issue...

"I finally got an answer about double albums and what a 'Soundscan' figure means," writes NINXPX. Here is an excerpt from what he got, "......when a double album or boxed set is sold, it is tabulated as one unit, NOT as the number of discs within the set."

So, what does this all mean? It means that 530,000 red-cheeked NIN fans went out and bought The Fragile in America. Not too shabby for a double album costing over twenty dollars, with no American tour support. Soundscan sale figures are not double figures. This "doubling" is only done by the RIAA to designate platinum and gold awards which are based on shipments and not actual register sales. Unfortunately, Weathermen Records informed me today that Soundscan does not count their merchandise for these figures. "They don't offer us anything, or any kind of point of sale... " which in result makes these above figures inaccurate. Weathermen have currently sold an estimate of 1,300 units. I'm sure The Weathermen are not the only store in America whose figures are not counted for...

Rock Sound Trent Reznor Interview

The December issue of French music magazine 'Rock Sound' features a very large and impressive interview with Trent Reznor which he answers a lot of interesting questions.

In this issue Trent is asked questions about Columbine High School in Littleton, Rammstein on The Lost Highway, Closure, La Mer, MTV Video Music Awards, American Billboard and much more... Below is excerpt from the interview about his views on Columbine defending Marilyn Manson, since in some media stories Nine Inch Nails was used as a scapegoat as well.

"What occurred to Littleton is a true tragedy. The media had to find a scapegoat, but by occulting obviously completely are their responsibilities. it was needed once more to "sensationalize " this story and to put a face on the cover of magazine, so it was the music. I found ridiculous that they show Marilyn Manson where as there is no connection with what occurred. He was the bad guy of the story. It is easy for the media to point finger at somebody like him. It is forgotten where as the true faulty ones are the parents. But it is a so complex situation..."

Thanks again 'Dissonance' for all your help.

Richard Patrick Comments On The Fragile

Just as the December interview above with Trent Reznor in 'Rock Sound' magazine, front man Richard Patrick of Filter is also featured with a large interview, which he poorly comments about The Fragile.

Question: but are you happy, for example, to see that Filter is not just anymore the group of "the former guitarist of Nine Inch Nails"?

Richard: On my side, I say to you that his music does not speak to me any more (pout a little disgusted) frankly, you listened to his new album?

Question: Yes. and although over-estimated, I find it excellent.

Richard: Ah ok, really... (with the face of a man who see its interlocutor eating a plate of cold spinach, followed by a sorry silence of ten seconds, and an immense sigh). you want what I have say to you? I am proud to have been in these two groups which succeeded. I am proud to have succeeded in making me credibility in Nine Inch Nails, to put the ends, and to make of them me all alone another notoriety with MY group, completely, completely different. Filter is not the career solo of the former guitarist of Nine Inch Nails. All the more have of it is the impression that people understand me and seem to adhere to what I do so that I make my songs unique. They speak only about me. They are the level of Filter... they represent what proposes a group, my group.

Thanks again 'Dissonance' for all your help.

NIN To Continue US Tour Through The Summer

According to Neal O'Brien, an SLS viewer who hung out with the band backstage on December 1st following the Brixton Academy, London gig, Trent Reznor said the US tour, which begins early February 2000, will continue through out the summer. This is what O'Brien had to say:

After the show I got to talk to danny lohner, jerome dillon and trent reznor. We were asking danny why they didn't play Dublin, and he said that they were supposed to kick off the tour there, but they couldn't because of some complications, I suppose it was because of the MTV awards that were on at the same time as the start of the tour. Danny was very laid back and friendly, making him very approachable. Jerome was who I've never seen except in pictures before, must be about 6'7" or something, because I'm 6'5" and I had to look up at him. He was dead cool aswell. Trent then came out, but I got a bit tongue tied and just listened to him talk, he was just saying stuff about the upcoming US leg and that it will continue thorugh the summer. I got to take a picture of him, but it was for some girl I didn't know. Trent was very calm and collected, being really appreciative of us (fans). I have to say though his bodygaurd (or whatever he was, he wasn't big at all) was a bit of a prick. There were about 15 people there and because of him only about 5 of us including myself got to meet trent even though he seemed happy to talk for longer. 'straight otta crompton' by NWA was blasted up by his driver as he got into the car and was whisked away.
We will have O'Brien's entire Brixton Academy review, including the 30 new reviews, live photos (with dozens and dozens on the way) that I haven't had time to edit online anyday now...

Into The Void Radio Statistics

You can find a very extensive article on Nine Inch Nails' third CD single, "Into The Void," over at Sonicnet/Addicted To Noise, which they discus a chance the promotional single will rejuvenate the Fragile in the charts. Unfortunately, the way things are looking; we won't see a big change in the charts until NIN tours America.

Sky Daniels, general manager of trade magazine Radio & Records made a lot of interesting comments in this article, which deserves some looking into! Below are some statistical highlights from the article:

Into The Void has been added to 23 of the 25 biggest alternative-rock stations since it's official November 29th release. Since then the promotional single was added to 36 alternative stations this, bringing its total up to 70 stations nationwide, including hard-rock outlets. Total spins of the song have jumped from 200 to 700 a week nationwide in three weeks.

To date, The Fragile has sold just more than 530,000 copies, according to sales-tracking company SoundScan. Unfortunately, The Fragile is currently #178 on this week's Billboard 200, which was published yesterday.

311 Front Man Hexum Comments On Trent In Rollingstone

In the December 9th issue of Rolling Stone (Christina Ricci) there is a small article on page 31 concerning 311. Hexum, the singer, is commenting on how positive they want to be with their music and had this to say about Trent Reznor

"It seems like a lot of artists are expressing all of this angst and pain, once they get into this shtick. I mean, what if Trent Reznor went into therapy and all of a sudden became very happy? People wouldn't wanna hear any fucking happy music from him!"
The article then goes on to explain that Hexum suffers from "depressive periods" that include insomnia and hearing voices (no joke!).

Jimmie's Chicken Shack Covers NIN's Sanctified

Barak Krakauer, an SLS viewer, attended an 'Our Lady Peace' concert recently, which the opening band "Jimmie's Chicken Shack" broke into a Nine Inch Nails cover of 'Sanctified.'

This is what he had to say:

I went to see Our Lady Peace, and Jimmie's Chicken Shack opened for the... I never thought too highly of Shack, but they put on a really good show. At the end, they said something about "This is where we become an angry band, because the angry bands are making all the money", and they launch into a (brief) cover of Sanctified, before leading into one of their songs. Not quite as cool as seeing NIN themselves in concert, but I didn't expect Jimmie's Chicken Shack to cover a NIN tune...

Nothing Record Promos

Apparently Nothing Records have recently released stadic cling window stickers, which are nearly two feet long that reads "nothing records". You might find them at your local HMV or Tower Records outlet.

Second WITT Single Features Extended Version Of The Perfect Drug

Nils Schlter, an SLS viewer and news contributor, wrote us yesterday after taking a closer look at the new "We're In This Together" singles, which he comments, "'Complication of the Flesh' is pretty cool!"

"The CDs don't came in Box Set," explained Nils, "as was mentioned previously. There is no multimedia stuff on the third CD, but the version of 'The Perfect Drug' is different!"

The new TPD on disc two has a running time of 5 min 43 sec long. The original version on the Lost Highway soundtrack, the promo single, as well as all the other releases have only the running time 5 min 15 sec. "This Version is not rough cutted at the end," explained Nils, "it fades away very slowly and this sounds a lot better, than the original one."

Trent Reznor Chats With French Magazine 'Elegy' Extensively

As we translate the 8 new French Trent Reznor interviews, over the next few days, thanks to Dissonance, which we briefly mentioned yesterday. We discovered, yet again, in the November 12th issue of 'Elegy' magazine is a question concerning Trent Reznor's upcoming remix album. Below is an excerpt from the very extensive and highly recommended interview:

You always made an intensive use of the remixes. Will The Fragile be followed of a remix-album like your preceding discs?

Trent: There are strong chances, even if I undoubtedly do not call upon external remixers as I could do it before. They will be probably more reinterpretations of songs and versions which we gave up in "cours de route" (expression that mean here "when we advance in recording the album"). There remains to us a great quantity of unexploited material, really very strange titles, and I think that this type of album-remix would be a good occasion to publish them..........

Trent continues to explain why he likes the practice of remixes, because it accounts to his most abstract ways.... Just as we mentioned above, this interview is highly recommended. Click here to read the entire translated interview.

Trent Reznor Graces The Cover of Raygun Magazine

Low and behold the December '99/January '00 issue of Raygun magazine features Trent Reznor on the cover of their latest, 3 page interview currently on stands.

We've included some nice points of interest below, which Trent Reznor speaks more in depth about Bob Ezrin's involvement with The Fragile. Bob Ezrin, who sequenced The Fragile, has lorded over rock-opera productions from Lou Reed, Kiss and Pink Floyd.

Reznor recollects "Pages and pages of notes. And he was like 'Let me explain to you what record you just made'. He was like 'Here are some weak points, here's my vote for what shouldn't be on the record, and here's my running order.'"

"And I thought, 'Alright!' So I put it on and listened to it, and it was...it was...terrible! Halfway through the first side I was daydreaming, I was looking out the window."

"And it got to the very last day Bob was supposed to be here, I came in that morning and there were some new cd's sitting in front of me. And I wasn't very optimistic about what I was going to hear."

"....halfway through the first CD was when it hit me, when I started crying. Then I immediately put the second CD on, thinking, 'Well, this can't be good because all my favorite songs are on the first cd. But it finished and I was like 'Fuckin'-A! Alright!' I couldn't believe it!"

David Bowie also had kind words (as always), comparing Trent to Hermann Nitsch, an Austrian conceptual artist. Here's an excerpt;
"...I think he's (Trent) one of the most talented writers of his generation, in this country, and I would expect to still see him around in ten, twenty years' time. I just hope he gets through all this so he can be here with us for that long-he is truly a talented kid."
The magazine features a scene with Trent roaming in some fog with what appears to be shopping carts, a photo of him behind a fence (similar to the "We're In This Together" video) and a "two page spread photo of Trent in the middle of the mag," writes Max Ros.

Thanks ever so much again to: NINXPX.

Virgin Megapresse Trent Reznor Interview

The French music magazine, "Virgin Megapresse," which featured the blurb about Trent Reznor feeling impatient about returning to the studio to work on his cut Fragile tracks (read yesterday's headline, "The Lost NIN Tracks To Be Released On an EP Or Upcoming Singles" for more info) is now translated and transcribed online in it's entirety here.

The new interview explains why Trent Reznor hooked up with Puff Daddy back in early '98 to remix "Victory." Below is a short excerpt from the interview:

Trent: (a little annoyed) Hum, Puff daddy contacted me to remix the title "Victory " by specifying me that I could do exactly what I wanted, which made the challenge interesting....
The interview also gives some insight about how the mood of the album was constructed as well. Below is another short excerpt from the article, which continues on with more detail in the interview.
Trent: Alan Moulder, the producer, and I first of all composed some abstract musical parts, without real discussion thread other than spirit and instinct, without asking questions about the general orientation of the disc. That was for me a way to free myself from the image of Nine Inch Nails...
The interview continues on about how he continued to struggle delaying The Fragile with side projects, among many other interesting stories...

Thanks again 'Dissonance' for all your help.

Female NIN Fans Get Rowdy While Hanging With Lohner and Dillon

Allstar News features an odd article about NIN bassist Danny Lohner and drummer Jerome Dillon fooling around after the sold-show at Brixton Academy on London on Monday (November 27th) at the posh Met Bar.

According to Allstar News, "Gary Numan and Alan Wilder were seen dancing, and a few of the ladies in their party were told to "tone it down" by Nails' managers when they started getting racy."

"The ladies were nearly thrown out when they tried to take a photo with NIN bassist Danny Lohner," says Allstar News, which in result the management jumped in and expressed that 'PHOTOS ARE NOT ALLOWED', which they then threatened to confiscate their camera!

As the story continued, Allstar explained, "Lohner had to plead on their behalf that it was perfectly all right." "When one of the gals tried to get guitarist Robin Finck to cha-cha to the DJ," explained Allstar, "he confessed weakly, 'I can't do that.'"

Check out Allstar's report to read what happened next here.

The sold-out tour, which began on November 14th in Barcelona, has received both enthusiastic audiences and rave reviews. The NIN Political Party

In the December 6, 1999 issue of the New Yorker, an interview with Sid McCain, daughter of NIN-loving senator John McCain (shown on right), has brought up the good senator's fondness for Trent and the boys. Sid is actually a publicity director at Capitol records, overseeing Megadeth and various other bands . (This explains John McCain's odd interest in pop music.) Anyway, it appears Trent should be checking his mailbox for inaugural invitations.

Here is an excerpt from the article:

The Senator returned for an interview at MTV the other day. He avoided the boxers-or-briefs issue, but did say he would consider inviting Nine Inch Nails to his inaugural.
Hey, Reagan wanted to use Springsteen's "Born in the USA", maybe Starfuckers, Inc. has campaign jingle potential. LOL

Thanks as always to: NINXPX.

Brief Trent Reznor, Danny Lohner Interview On VIVA II

On November 29th, VIVA II aired a small Trent Reznor/Danny Lohner interview, which they both explained were very happy with 'The Fragile' and how the tour was moving along.

Trent personally explained that the Germany crowd was very good and in the future he would like to work on another soundtrack, but not something like "The Lost Highway." No more information was given unfortunately....

When Danny and Trent finished, Atari Teenage Riot were briefly interviewed as well. Surely, they explained, that they are also happy with the way things are going for the tour, as well as opening for NIN, but are extremely tired, because they have been touring without any breaks since June.

ATR also added, that people hear their songs very differently when they perform live, which would be in result why many dislike them live, but buy their records. Ironic I would have to say...

Thanks a lot to: Anton Pinski.

New Live NIN Photos In Rockin' On Magazine

Commy, picked up the latest Japanese overseas music issue of "Rockin' On" magazine today, which features a few professional live shots of Trent Reznor taken during the November 14th performance in Barcelona.

The magazine also features a review of the performance, including an official set list and four more photos. Everything will be located in her "J-archives" section later today.

The review article basically recites the same thoughts the fans have been writing in their reviews... so nothing new there. Oddly enough, the magazine does mention that the official set list, which was given to them from official sources, features "SHORT 1" as a track? Anyhow, the magazine also explained that 12 photographers, were able to take photos during the first three songs, which is common during all live acts. That's why they are so professional. You don't think they sneak their cameras in there like we do, do ya?

Commy also explained, "I heard that one other magazine will publish their European tour articles in the middle of December," which she will pass the information on to us when they are published or at least picks them up.

The Lost NIN Tracks To Be Released On an EP Or Upcoming Singles

We have two new Trent Reznor interviews, which we have broken down for you, since we translated them from French into English. What we have done, for the time being, is extracted the two stories which discuss what Trent Reznor plans to work on when he is not touring....

Featured below is a large quote from Trent Reznor in the December issue of "Rock 'n' folk" magazine, which he discusses how The Fragile was nearly a triple CD and that he also believed if it wasn't for all the cut tracks, the Fragile wouldn't have seen the light 'til 2000. He then adds that the *lost* NIN tracks will appear on an upcoming EP, such as a remix album or on upcoming singles.

Trent began to talk on a chronological explanation of the album, and we learn that the right disc (the second) has been all practically composed after the left one (the first) and that near than ten more tracks stayed on the drawer board... not fully closed. "We've just finished mixing them. They will be release next year on an EP or on singles, but they could very well have been on this album. In fact, I can ensure you that during the last months of mixing, I believed to become insane: the more we advanced, the more I had the impression that we'll go to a triple CD and that he would be released on the new millennium. So cuts have to been made."
Similar to what Trent Reznor told Rock 'n' folk magazine above, the November issue of "Virgin Megapresse" asks Trent, "Will you wait three new years to begin work again?" Trent explains, that he has become impatient and wants to return to the studio to work on the material they cut from the album.
"I don't think so, I'm really different today than I was five years ago and I've learned to not repeat the same mistakes. In any way, I'm really impatient to return to studio for working on the material we left on the side after those two years of recording, which will quickly be born in the shape of a mini album. The next months are likely to be very productive.
We are still working on transcribing the eight interviews, which we hope to have online very soon.

Thanks again 'Dissonance' for all your help.

New Details About NIN Side-Project "Tapeworm"

Here is the specific blurb transcript, which Trent Reznor talks with French magazine 'Hard Rock' about the side NIN project "Tapeworm." We will have the entire interview online in English, shortly...

Question: Can you speak to me about your side-project Tapeworm?

Trent: Tapeworm is something we had talked about for the longest time, but it got lost when I was doing The Fragile. Today, that regains shape; there are some loan certificates. The starting point of Tapeworm, it is a democracy between the members of NIN, Danny Lohner and Charlie Clouser in particular. We want to do something of rather obvious, fun, without pressure, of the good aggressive music, which would not tally with Nine Inch Nails, less considered, more spontaneous. It is a project really for the fun. We want to work with various singers for this disc: Maynard of Tool and Phil of Pantera - I am fan of Pantera! It is a good means of escaping the constant pressure that there is with Nine Inch Nails.

Question: I imagine that it is a project with orientation of metal...

Trent: Yes more "in your face" than Nine Inch Nails, something you can listen very loud in your car !

Question: When will this disc come out?

Trent: In terms of recording, it is currently our priority. But there is the NIN tour; therefore I do not know too much when one will start to it. I think nevertheless that that should be available to spring 2000.
