NIN Programmers Mixing Nine Inch Nails Remix Album

The news has been booming as ever and Darren, an SLS viewer, has recently obtained some exclusive information concerning the Nine Inch Nails remix album for the Fragile. "I was told this information by my band teacher at Wall High School," explained Darren. This is his story...

I was in my band class, and was called into his office concerning some money that the school owes me. As I was talking to him, I noticed he looked down at my shirt, I was wearing one of my NiN shirts that said "NINEINCHNAILS" directly on the front. I walked out of the room and about a minute later he came up to me and said, "One of my friends, Clinton Bradley recently got finished remixing Nine Inch Nails new album in Los Angeles."

I'm not sure how my band teacher and Clinton Bradley know each other, but my teacher said he spoke to him on the phone recently. I might have a follow up to this some time tomorrow, when I return to school and ask some more questions.

Clinton Bradley is credited on The Fragile, four pages from the back (left side), as one of the many programmers. Other programmers who are credited include Keith Hillebrandt, Charlie Clouser, Paul Decarli, Steve Duda and of course Trent Reznor. We hope to feature more information about this some time tomorrow or the following days...

TheThe's "NakedSelf" Advanced Order

Mint Shows, an SLS viewer, was surfing around on the net and noticed that CDNOW.COM and AMAZON.COM already have the new TheThe album "Nakedself" ready for advanced order. Over on Amazon.com, the featured cover art isn't the same cover shown in our previous scans, which they say NakedSelf has already sold nearly 24,000 advanced copies. Unfortunately the artwork and packaging scans we presented on our January 25th headline (please read our "Official The The Artwork, Matt Johnson Interviews, Track Listing, Online Samples & More" headline for more info) is in limited quantity! Only the very first orders will be packaged with extra photos, etc, then the regular jewel case version, which Amazon feature, will be all that's available.

Sometime around the album release for NakedSelf, you'll be able to check out some audio clips on the official TheThe.com website.

Australian's The Age Newspaper Photo Online

Bradley Peggram, an SLS viewer, contacted the Australian newspaper editor of The Age and the Big Day Out picture caption of Danny Lohner has been updated here to their Nine Inch Nails review. Read our January 30th headline "Big Day Out Newspaper Reviews" for more info.)

Thanks a lot also to: Type 40.

Signed Trent Reznor Guitar, This TIme On VH1.com

DeathRockBoy, another SLS viewer, wrote us on Saturday and noticed there's a nice fender squire stratocaster on auction at VH1.com that was signed by Trent Reznor. "It's going for $510 right now," he adds, "but that could change." What is interesting is that it's a fender/squire and Trent has usually been known to use gibsons. "This is the first time I've even heard of him playing anything else," explained DeathRockBoy. "They say that the guitar was acquired at the secret Irving Plaza show on September 5th, 1996. I saw all this on rock collectors this morning on VH1." He explained, "they didn't show the owner talking to a pro or something, but they did manage to show a small segment in which the guitar was featured while "closer" was playing in the background." DeathRockBoy also mentioned that they showed some "closer" video clips, while talking about the guitar. Here's the link to the auction.

Big Day Out Newspaper Reviews

Naut, an SLS viewer, informed us that in today's Herald Sun newspaper they have a write up on the Big Day Out which has a color picture of Trent singing as well as one of him down in front of the crowd with everyone grabbing at him, also in color The Age, another newspaper in Melbourne, also has a write up of the Big Day out. They have a large picture of Danny about to jump into the crowd, which they've actually captioned as Trent Reznor!

The newspaper's websites have the write ups on the Big Day Out, but not the aforementioned pictures which is a shame. Check them out at www.theage.com.au and www.news.com.au.

Atari Teenage Riot Wants To Remix NIN's Starfuckers Inc.

We were sent another bit of exclusive news in regards to Atari Teenage Riot doing a remix for Nine Inch Nails. Please read our January 27th headline, "Alec Empire of Atari Teenage Riot To Remix Track(s) Off The Fragile" for more info.

"I was just chatting to Alec Empire via a Big Day Out chat room," said an SLS viewer named Bradley Peggram. The viewer asked, "Alec, I heard that you may be doing some remixes from the new NIN album The Fraigle. This true?" Alex replied, "Me and NIN - yes, Trent Reznor asked me - it's true...I want to do STARFUCKERS INC. and get a new haircut..."

Thanks a lot to: Bradley Peggram.

Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers Comments Again About NIN's Live Performance

During TripleJs Hottest 100 on Wednesday (26th), repeated yesterday (29th). The Red Hot Chili Peppers came in at number 10 with "Scar Tissue." Right before this the presenters Merick and Rosso interviewed Flea who introduced their song. They asked him if he'd seen any other bands while on the Big Day Out tour and he said, "Yeah, Nine Inch Nails. Nine Inch Nails are great. I love the Nine Inch Nails."

Reznut, another SLS viewer, wrote us about Flea's previous comments on NIN, (please read our January 29th headline "Flea of Read Hot Chili Peppers Praises Nine Inch Nails" for more info) and it reminded him of when he saw NIN on Oct. 7, 1994 at Universal Amphitheater in Hollywood. "Flea was standing next to my friend watching the show," claimed Reznut. "Flea was definitely spell-bound by NIN's performance that night so Flea's comments come as no surprise to me."

Thanks a lot again to: Bradley Peggram, Reznut.

NIN To Tour Australia In November 2000

Type 40, an SLS viewer in Australia, just returned home from the Melbourne leg of the Big Day Out tour, to explain, "Just before the set ended to Hurt, Trent spoke to the audience about how "... Big Day Out has been a really nice experience for them, like getting a chance to play with bands like Foo Fighters & Red Hot Chili Peppers; bands they (NIN) really respect". He then went on to say that NIN would be returning to Australia "... in the fall later this year, probably in November".

This is awesome news, straight from Trent Reznor himself, which confirms our earlier reports about Nine Inch Nails returning to Australia. Please read our January 28th headline, "More Information About Nine Inch Nails Possibly Returning To Australia Following The US", and our January 27th headline "NIN To Possibly Tour Australia Following The US Tour Says NIN Photographer" as well for more information.

Thanks a lot to: Type 40, CoMa, naut, zak, danstewa, hg, LiquidXFusion, altair.

New Nine Inch Nails Fragile Commercial In Australia

Ben Mathews, an SLS viewer, wrote in to explain that he caught a new Fragile commercial while watching The Simpsons on Channel 10 (Australian TV).

"I may miss out a little detail I'm not sure but for some reason first it showed some guy surfing on a wave with Into The Void in the background," explained Ben. He then went on to explain that, "it just cuts over to small clips of the Into The Void video clip when Trent is repeating 'I tried to save myself but myself keeps slipping away) and they're in the small red room jamming away." Then a voice over speaks up to say, "how The Fragile was rated number 1 album of the year by Spin magazine and how it is out now at your local record store and is a blockbuster album etc.," said Ben. "Then just showing the cover of the fragile at the end of the ad."

Official Marilyn Manson Web Site Reviewed By Internet World

Issue 1/2000 of the Swedish internet-magazine "Internet World" mentioned the official Marilyn Manson web site. Here's a translation of what the critic wrote:

"The moralists won't be any less startled when entering Marilyn Manson's official homepage. Here Manson fights a war against the world, the way it looks today, and preaches Armageddon in both text and pictures. I, who don't belong to the above-mentioned moralists, think the site is refreshing and exciting with advanced graphics. And I know that Alice Cooper frightened first."
The site was rated an 8/10.

ID Software's Todd Hollenshead Mentions NIN

There was a recent interview of Todd Hollenshead at Quakeidge.com where he was asked what kind of music he listens to:

QC- What Kind of Music do you listen to?

TH - I listen to all kinds of music. Recently, I've been listening to The Fragile (NIN) and Issues (Korn), but that's not necessarily representative of my taste in music.

You can read the transcript here.

Thanks a lot to: PhiberKut.

New Coil Releases, Tour News and More

Coil fans, check out the news page on the official website. They recently updated with a lot of major news, including the announcement of the first live Coil dates (as Time Machines) in over 15 years. Also some news about the Backwards release (which looks like it's been delayed yet again, this time until Xmas 2000).

Coil have a couple new releases out now. the first, under their ELpH pseudonym, is a 20 minute EP entitled Zwölf and was released as part of the Raster/Noton 20' to 2000 series (only 2000 copies are available of this release). There are reviews of this and the rest of the 20' to 2000 series here, including a couple mp3 sound clip previews of the ELpH release.

Also out now (and arriving in the states in a matter of days) is the CD release of Astral Disaster, which was previously only available as part of a very limited (only 99 copies pressed) vinyl edition. Portions have been reworked and extended for release on the CD (which features some beautiful digipack artwork).

Thanks a lot to: mark and jared.

TheThe Review In Latest Alternative Press Magazine

The latest Alternative Press magazine features a reivew of TheThe's new album "NakedSelf" on page 97:

THE THE
NakedSelf
Matt Johnson's first album in five years retains his trademark darkness, and brings the noise, too.

Oooh, but he's in a bad mood today. The The, of course, have never been purveyors of the happiest, hopeful sounds around, but when the first words out of Matt Johnson's mouth are "piss'n'moan," and the booklet is all bricked industrial complexes, and the guitars are on stun for almost all 12 songs....

And what songs they are! "Boiling Point," "Shrunken Man," "Soul Catcher," "Voidy Numbness"--don't you wish your favorite band could have a title like "Voidy Numbness"? But it wouldn't sound like this, though--numb indeed and reasonably voidy, and that despite a clatter guitar which wanders blithely through the mix, like a Buzzcock caught in a Skinny Puppy rehearsal. "Can I leave now, please?" you hear it ask politely, but "Voidy Numbness" just crunches along, and it'll have to wait till the end like the rest of us. (And that's the real end, not the fake one which comes in halfway through.)

This is not the The album that l995's Hanky Panky led us to expect, and while it's true that Matt Johnson's been progressively painting himself in ever tighter corners ever since l981's Burning Blue Soul first brought the cumudgeon to light, if he really wanted to join Dinosaur Jr. shouldn't he have done it l0 years ago? NakedSelf is actually an exhilarating noise, with a few tender moments thrown in to confuse you. But it's still noise. Oooh, he's in a bad mood. Again. (Nothing)- Dave Thompson.

Random Nothing News

The pay-TV network, "Sky," in New Zealand is advertising its new Buffy The Vampire Slayer season by using an advert with Nine Inch Nails' 'The Way Out Is Through' song as the background music. It's only the beginning part and it finishes before Trent sings anything.

Thanks a lot to: Nick.

The sno-core tour, hitting northwest US right now featuring bands System of a Down, and Incubus, had large screens on the sides of the stage with videos playing. Changa, an SLS viewer wrote, "They played 'Into the Void.' Which was the only Nothing label artist on there." She then added, "Other band videos played were Bloodhound Gang, as well as System of a Down and Incubus."

Thanks a lot to: Changa.

In the March SPIN issue, on page 146, under the of Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails is mentioned several times:
It's too early to make career predictions for the alternative rock stars of the early '90's. Some will thrive with a reduced fanbase: Yield, for instance, was the most self-contented music of Pearl Jam's career and still sold 1.5 million copies. Others may follow a trajectory more like Dylan or, I bet, Prince, going through fallow years and then erupting. TRENT REZNOR waited an eternity for hit inspiration, then made a mood piece, pleasing critics and baffling everyone else. In a humbler counterpart to THE FRAGILE, Machina's {Smashing Pumpkins} final tracks are monochromes that ration the intensity, like the orientalist gong show "The Mercury Tree." As albums go, it's quite the tripartite structure: Commerce, Craft, and Coloring. A road that forks three ways. Which way will Billy Corgan walk?

Thanks to: crystal.

Bryan, an SLS viewer, wanted to let nin fans know, since there is a lot of debate about the Richard Patrick and Trent Reznor lately, there is lot of arguing going on at the Filter message board at OfficialFilter.com.

He adds, "Thought you might want to check it out, it's pretty interesting... The NIN and Filter fans get pretty defensive ... actually, mostly the Filter fans... I posted myself (under the name Noreason)"

Exclusive Charlie Clouser Interview at 'The Remix Files'

Morpheus TechnoPagan, the webmaster behind 'The Remix Files', the unofficial website dedicated to Charlie Clouser, wrote us to explain that Charlie contacted him during the Japanese leg of the 'Fragility' tour.

"He seemed to be pleased with 'The Remix Files'," adds Morpheus. "I took this opportunity to ask Charlie some questions about his future projects."

So, if you're interested to hear the latest news about Tapeworm, Charlie's participation to Page Hamilton solo album (former Helmet leader), his remixing projects and unreleased alternative mixes, the artists Charlie would like to work with, his movie scores, Burning Retna, etc..., then you must go to the 'Interviews' section of 'The Remix Files' and click on "The Remix Files Exclusive Interview".

"Charlie is an extremely friendly, sensitive and open person," said Morpheus. "He remains accessible for his fans, despite his huge talent, busy schedule and growing popularity. Charlie takes the time necessary to reply to my e-mails almost every day, even now that NIN is on tour."

Thus, Morpheus hopes that his future projects (incl. Tapeworm) and 'The Remix Files' will contribute to give Charlie Clouser all the credit he deserves...

New Manson Article At Official Site, MTV Says Late Summer 2000 For Manson Album

The official Marilyn Manson news web site has updated their news page yesterday with a new article written by Manson about a self-portrait entitled "The Lamb of God." He says, "Some may find this picture to be a violent endorsement of guns or a suggestion of negativity. I pity those that do, for they have a cracked ugly mirror to look into everyday, and the ashes of burned books on their hands. This is you, this is MARILYN MANSON and this is the youth of America." A very strong article, which references many issues that seem to be about his latest album.

Speaking about his new album, MTV ran a news clip yesterday that featured some info on 3rd Eye Blind firing their guitarist, which then, the new news announcer, went on to say that Manson is recording The Shadow Of The Valley Of Death and that it will be out late summer.

Marilyn Manson's Artwork Mentioned On TV Guide

Maria, an SLS viewer, was watching the TV Guide channel (with the TV listings on it) and there was a small mention about Marilyn Manson's artwork during their entertainment news show. "It noted," she explained, "that he had recently posted 23 pieces on the official website and that, while he wasn't planning on giving up the music business to become an artist, he was planning to show his work in a gallery. There weren't any gallery names mentioned, though."

Flea of Read Hot Chili Peppers Praises Nine Inch Nails

In the "Flea Mail" section of the official Red Hot Chili Pepper's page, Flea yet again mentions Nine Inch Nails.

"The Nine Inch Nails are great to see, the music has so much in the way of melody and rhythm and intensity, I really love that band."

Thanks a lot to: jcbrimhall, Steven Flores.

AP Magazine Mentions Again That ATR Was Asked To Open For American NIN Dates

Although the official Alternative Press magazine web site featured this online some time ago... The AP March issue, mentions that Atari Teenage Riot, could again be the opening again for Nine Inch Nails during the North American Fragility leg:

After opening for NINE INCH NAILS in Europe, Alec Empire and Atari Teenage Riot will be shooting a new video for "Too Dead For Me," the second single from their 60 Second Wipe Out album. ATR will be recording/compiling a sequel, 60 Second Wipe Out II, which will feature selected Empire remixes, obscure live recordings, alternate versions and interviews. ATR will also be recording an EP for the fiercely independent Alternative Tentacles label for release later in 2000. And finally, TRENT REZNOR has asked Empire to support NIN on their impending American tour.

Thanks a lot to: crystal.

Robin Finck Caught On Tape In Sydney

John Raptis, the mastermind behind the web site Happiness In Slavery, informed us that his Australian based Nine Inch Nails web site, features an exclusive interview with Robin Finck (real audio format) caught by the Big Day Out cameras... Here's what Finck had to say in regards to Sydney, lemonade, Aussie girls.... "and umm other things...," says John Raptis.

More Information About Nine Inch Nails Possibly Returning To Australia Following The US

Neurophobe, an SLS viewer in Austrlia, wrote us today with good news about Nine Inch Nails returning to Australia following the North American tour. This is what he had to say when he had a chat with a Universal Records Rep when he attended a Foo Fighters signing.

"I attended the 'Foo Fighters' instore performance and signing at HMV Sydney City today (Fri 28) and got to talk to a Universal Records rep. about NIN and other BDO bands (Universal Records market NIN in Australia.), explained Neurophobe.

Neurophobe asked her if she enjoyed the BDO NIN performance and she said she "thought it was very well done and a professional production", this led onto the topic of them coming back to Australia later on in the year, expalined Neurophobe

She said "well they did get a very good reception at the BDO, and Trent really enjoys playing in Australia, so it's a strong possibility they will come back after they finish the big US tour."

She also mentioned that Trent was staying at a different hotel to the rest of the guys, "I thought that was a bit strange," adds Neurophobe, of course we can't publish which hotels. She also said all of NIN and all the bands attending the BDO are leaving Sydney for Melbourne on Saturday morning so Trent or any of NIN won't be attending the "Into The Void" release party at the black-market as mentioned in an earlier headline of ours. (please read our January 27th headline "Into The Void Launch Party In Australia")

"It's also worth a mention," exaplined Neurophobe, "that there were many Fragility 2000 tour shirts from the BDO among the hundreds and hundreds of people in queue for the Foo Fighters in store."

Another Trent Reznor Signed Guitar

An Epiphone Les Paul Guitar signed on the pick guard is being given away by Mall Music in Warringah Mall, Sydney Australia. The contest is open to those who sign the Fragile.

Thanks a lot to: guin.

Reznor Article in Australian newspaper

In the Australian newspaper 'The Age' in the 'Eg' section, a viewer named Molten Solace noticed the front page has a picture of Trent Reznor "and there's also an article about NIN's performance in the Big Day Out festival in the centre spread."

NIN To Work On Gary Numan Album, NIN mentioned on Apple's Gary Numan Page

We forgot to mention yesterday that the same Kerrange! issue, with the little Trent Reznor blurb from Richard Patrick, that Trent Reznor is said to work with Gary Numan on his new album. The article also explained that among Trent Reznor was Billy Corgan and Rhys Fulber who would be contributing their skills to his latest album.

Also while a viewer was browsing Apple's music site, "I stumbled across a page about Gary Numan, " explained Jon. "On this page was a reference to NIN & Manson." Below is the paragraph to the mention:

Talk about the man-machine interface. I mean, sure, synthesizers had been used to make music before, but when Gary Numan hit the scene back in the early '80s no one had quite so seamlessly woven the image-all stainless steel and frosted glass-to make good on the promise of post-modern might and our undying love of machines. His paean to machine lust, the seminal song "Cars," was followed by more hits and then nothing. Recently in the press again because of a passel of fans from The Smashing Pumpkins and NIN to the Foo Fighters and Marilyn Manson, Numan, long time Mac fan (and fanatic) sat down for a D&P vetting on new media, technology, and the business of art.

Thanks a lot to: Jon Bell.

Richard Patrick Speaks Publicly About The Fragile Yet Again

The latest issue of Kerrang! magazine, which features a 4-page interview with Richard Patrick about Filter's European Tour. "Apart from coming across in the interview as a total wanker who hates spending money touring," explained Neil Walker, who has the issue, the interview also says, "He rants about how much this tour is costing before badmouthing former bandmate Trent Reznor, referring to his new album as 'the flaccid' rather than 'the fragile'."

Well, we received an email on December 21st, from Miriam4 who saw Filter and she had this to report back after she talked with Richard Patrick back stage in Boston:

I recently saw filter live here in Boston, and met Richard Patrick after the show. We spoke about Filter and NIN. He became rather irate about his time in NIN and called The Fragile, the Flaccid. He went on to state that NIN has lost it's ability to create art, and that Trent Reznor is a pussy. Apparently, he hasn't seen Filter's latest video. That is a small step up from most of the garbage that we are all bombarded with such as Backstreet Boys and Natalie Imbruglia!

Help Get Into The Void Back On MuchMusic

The Psychadelic Eskimo (love the name by the way), who lives in Canada, needs some help getting MuchMusic to actually play the new Nine Inch Nails video "Into the void." He writes, "since the video was voted trash by the three people they pulled in off the street. They haven't played the video once." (Please read our January 19th headline, "MuchMusic Aired 'Into The Void' On Ed The Sock's Smash or Trash" for more info.) "I know," adds Eskimo, "because I've been taping the station 24-7 and watching it on fast forward." The dedicated NIN Eskimo believes that they are ever going to play it again without a lot of fan support. So, those who are just as dedicated as the Psychadelic Eskimo here, you can write MuchMusic at ondemand@muchmusic.com and ask to request the video. For it to count the video title has to be in the subject line, which we have already done for you. "With enough fan support I'm sure they'll play the video," he add, "but otherwise I don't think they'll ever play it again, and for us Canadian's who don't get MTV that means we'll probably never see it again." Hopefully the official NIN web site will upload it to their pages soon...?

Coming Soon To MarilynManson.net

The official Marilyn Manson web site made a few updates recently on their news page and said, "the official BBS will be updated latter today." As well as the news section, "will also take on a new look and feature a powerful new self portrait and essay by Manson within the next few days."

Thanks a lot to: ULTRAChrist.

Old Option 30 Interviews & Trent Reznor Photos

We featured this online some time ago, but I figured there's a lot of you who have never heard these interviews or seen these old photographs... Option 30, a band Trent Reznor used to be part of in 1983, has an official web site at ShriekRecords.com. The web site hosts a four part interview and 9 crazy hair style photographs of Trent Reznor posing and laughing with his band.

Check it out here. The interviews are in real audio format and have pretty decent quality.

Thanks a lot to: Tori Reznor.

David Lynch Interview + Twin Peeks

Although this irrelevant to the news.. Jay Leno, host of the Tonight Show, said last night that director David Lynch will be on his show. He did not specify which day he will be on, but he said later this week. Most likely will be Thursday or Friday. His web site has yet to update with an official answer, which means it hasn't been finalized just yet.

Speaking of David Lynch, Twin Peeks is to re-air!!! Bravo (US) to re-air Twin Peaks, starting February 4th, 1999 at 8 PM EST and 11 PM EST, with the two hour pilot. Episode 1 will air Friday February 11th at 8 PM EST, and so on for each episode... Check out Mulholland Drive Petition and Welcome to Twin Peaks: Laura's Diary for more information.

NIN To Possibly Tour Australia Following The US Tour Says NIN Photographer

Daniel Stewart, an SLS viewer, attended the Sydney Big Day Out festival yesterday and got an interesting exclusive for Australians!

"My friends and I had a NIN photographer come up to us and said he was taking photos of NIN fans to put up on the official NIN website," explained Stewart. "I asked him why NIN were not doing there own show in oz," added Daniel, "and he said they could be coming back after the US tour. The photographer then said, "Trent loved Australia."

"It was the best show I have ever seen," said Stewart. Here's the complete set list Stewart included in his letter: "Head Like a hole," "terrible lie," "get down make love," "wish," "gave up," "the frail," "the wretched," "sin," "closer," "The wretched," "into the void," "even deeper," "no you don't," "hurt," "starfuckers inc," "piggy," "march of the pigs."

We will have all our BDO reviews online this weekend on our World Tour Journal, including a few new Japan reviews.

Into The Void Launch Party In Australia

Daniel Stewart wrote back again to let Australians know that on Saturday, January 29th is a local Goth/industrial nightclub in Sydney OZ. They are to host the single industry launch party for Into The Void at the black-market. Stewart also explained that this is the same nightclub that can be seen in the The Matrix. Will Trent and company show up? Hmmm....

Alec Empire of Atari Teenage Riot To Remix Track(s) Off The Fragile

We mentioned on January 24th that Alec Empire of Atari Teenage Riot was to hold an online chat at Juice.net on Tuesday, January 25th. (Please our headline "Alec Empire of Atari Teenage Riot Online Chat" for more info.) Thanks to Allstar's exclusive interview on January 4th with Empire, he mentioned that to Allstar that he was to collaborate with Trent Reznor with a future project. Thanks to the manager of Juice.net's quick thinking, they contacted SLS News in time to participate in the chat and our question was answered!

Q: Has the band thought or been asked to remix a Nine Inch Nails song or maybe do a song together?

ALEC: Trent asked me to remix a track or two from their last album - and also asked me to collaborate with him on a separate project...

The transcript will be up on Juice.net soon. We'll let you know when it's online.

NIN To Perform Omaha, Nebraska?

Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Foo Fighters are coming to Omaha, Nebraska to perform at the Civic Auditorium on April 25, 2000. "Our local college radio station, 89.7 The River," explained David, who was listening, "said that NIN is also coming," which the radio station then commented, "you heard it here first!"

If you remember, the video to Hurt was shot at the civic. This does not mean Nine Inch Nails are performing on April 25th, the radio station is just informing locals that Nine Inch Nails are to perform at this same arena soon.

Demystifying The Devil UK Release Information

In this weeks Kerrang! magazine was an article on the unofficial Manson video "Demystifying The Devil," which is set for a UK release through Weinerworld, the date is expected to be April 3rd. The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) has given the video an 18 certificate (the highest UK rating), after removing 1 minute 23 seconds of footage. Such cut scenes from the unofficial documentary were:

"A scene where Manson lowers a sacrificial rabbit into a tank containing his pet python. The rabbit is attacked, killed and eaten. Nothing you wouldn't see on 'Life On Earth' (an wildlife programme)."

"A five second scene in which Manson performs oral sex on bassist Twiggy Ramirez during a live performance. The BBFC objected to this even though Ramirez' groin area was digitally obscured."

"Manson making his genitalia sing 'The Beautiful People'. No word yet on whether he balsas it up."

"A three second close-up of a man wearing goggles, along side a monkey on a crucifix. Clearly the height of offensive images."

Weinerworld's managing director, Anthony Broza said "Manson's management and record company are surprised that the BBFC would do something like this. Personally I'm not so surprised because the film is very frank! At least it can be released in the UK now, without being impounded by police. We submitted this film to the BBFC, they recommended the cuts and being a reputable company we were forced to make them."

A BBFC spokesperson told Kerrang!: "The majority of music videos are 'exempt' from classification and do not need to be seen by us at all. Marilyn Manson's work often falls outside the rules of 'exemption' because of the explicitly violent and sexual content of some of his videos. We are, of course, aware of the kudos attached to receiving a 'ban' on heavy metal videos and the BBFC generally doesn't reject such works."

He then went on to explain that the reason Manson's first official video "Dead To The World" remains unavailable in the UK isn't entirely their fault:

"It was initially released without a certificate, claiming 'exemption'. When doubt was expressed about whether the work was 'exempt' it was submitted to the BBFC, which required one scene to be cut, thus earning it an 18 certificate. These cuts were never made and the video was therefore withdrawn."

Also in the issue "God Is In The TV" is reviewed where it earned 4 K's out of 5. However, at the end of the review it says there are currently no plans to give it a UK release, though there is speculation that if "Demystifying The Devil" sells well enough these plans may be reconsidered.

Finally Manson was also in a feature titled "Kid Rock", which had photo's of 11 rock stars as children, with the reader having to try and work out who they are.

Thanks a shit load to: pogo.

NIN IN Oz Triplej Hottest 100

Starfuckers Inc. made it to number 69 in Australia's Triple J Hottest 100. Apparently there were over 650,000 votes polled for the whole thing, "I dunno how many NIN got though," explains SinnerStar, who was listening, " which is one of the largest music vote thingy's in the world apparently."

The winner was Australia's own Powderfinger with "These Days" from the Two Hands Soundtrack. "Brilliant song, brilliant movie," adds David. "I thought Starfuckers Inc. did rather well considering the album hasn't been out that long."

Australians Can Win a Signed Trent Reznor Guitar

Underground Records in Perth, Australia, have a NIN competition currently running. If you buy The Fragile, you enter a drawing for a guitar signed by Trent Reznor. The drawing is on the Monday following the Big Day Out on February 7th. They have the guitar hanging in the store, "and sure enough on a white part of it below the strings there's 'Trent Reznor' scrawled in black marker pen," explains David," with a little NIN in a box below (drawn there by TR)." The winner will be announced on RTR-FM. "I don't know anything about guitars," adds David, "but I think it said it's a Fender."

Nashville Pussy Takes Credit For Pulling Smiley Face Stunt During Marilyn Manson's "Rock Is Dead" Set In April '99

(V)iKe, an SLS viewer, spotted some very interesting news in the February 2000 issue of Metal Hammer. "I was reading through among the interviews and found a Nashville Pussy interview," explains (V)ike. "I was ready to turn the page because I don't like them, but in the corner of my eye I saw Marilyn Manson in the interview so i wanted to see what they had to say." Here's the brief transcript:

What's the most outrageous thing that you remember doing?

JERMY: Masterbating to a cartoon with everyone watch....or was that blaine? [laughs]
RUYTER: Does beastyality count?
COREY: Does shooting up crack count?
BLAINE: Does killing a bunch of kids in high school count? Yeah that was me.... i did that sorry i was drunk. [laughs]
RUYTER: Yeah sorry about that he was very, very drunk, Denver. [adopts english accient] He had a bit to much of the bitter, actually. What else?
Oh yeah we put that happy face on Marilyn Manson's podium and destroyed his tour or then again maybe we didn't [laughs]

If you remember our April 29th '99 headline, "Manson Storms Off Stage Ending With 23 Arrests," the arrests were spawned by the prank Nashville Pussy, who opened a few dates for Manson, pulled on them, which resulted Manson to walk off his set while he performed 'Antichrist Superstar,' at the Five Seasons Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

KyCog015, a concert attendee, who wrote us when he attended the concert last year, had this to say:

He did the first verse and when he flops over the front of the podium he noticed the face on the podium. He immediately started yelling behind him and then bent the microphone forward over the podium and tried to pull off the face. It would not come off so he then jumped off the podium and tried knocking the podium over, when he could not do this he took Ginger's drums and threw them and went off the stage. The lights came on and that was it. The crowd then started yelling "Fucck You" until everyone was told to leave. Then a small crowd gathered around the bus, security said that Marilyn had left and we needed to back up or police would come. That made the crowd angrier and police were sent in, next thing you knew the crowd was huge and the police were beating people and arresting them left and right. They had probably 15 cars and 100 cops, including dogs. It was a wild night. I say good for Manson because the people of Iowa sucked!
The Washington Post included this in their online report last year:
Potter [police Lt. Jerry Potter] said Five Seasons Center personnel told him that Manson ``somehow saw (the smiley face) at midpoint of the song and he became very upset.''

He said it was the face, 2 to 2 1/2 feet across, ``large enough to make a presence,'' was stuck on the front of a prop that looked like a pulpit. It was visible to the audience but not, at first, to Manson.

``It struck me as very odd that it would be part of his stage presence when it was so uncharacteristic of everything else he was doing,'' Potter said.

Tammy Koolbeck, marketing director at the Five Seasons Center, said no one in the crowd or the center's staff could have gotten to the prop to attach the smiley face.

``It was probably put on by one of his people,'' she said.

I guess that says enough, since it's been in the air nearly a year now!

Random Nothing News

The latest SPIN issue features a new Cure interview, which NIN is mentioned on 104.

1991: Smith makes tiny concession to the British dance revolution with the remix album Mixed Up, then burns that bridge by calling the rave scene "a load of dross" in Spin. In the States, Goths migrate to the harder sounds of industrial acts such as Nine Inch Nails.

Thanks a lot to: Trentsgrl1.

The official Rammestein web site features an interview, which makes reference to Manson and Rammstein being targeted for inciting violence and so on.

Thanks to: Michael Brown.

The Nine Inch Nails remix to David Bowie's "I'm Afraid of Americans" was used in a Bill Clinton autobiography special on MTV at 1/26/2000 12:00 PM Pacific Time. It was played while a montage of images describing the Monica Lewinsky affair showed.

An SLS viewer was driving back to his dorm, listening to 92.3 FM which is NY's K-Rock, and one of their commercials, their DJ Will Pindarvis(sp?) was talking about how music helps kids have a better education, and how it'll help the rock and rollers of the future, and in the background played Nine Inch Nails' "The Day The World Went Away." Just the beginning guitar part though, but "it fit perfectly," he said.

Thanks to: B.J.

Wes, an SLS viewer, just finished watching Natural Born Killers on DVD and happened to notice that at the end of the movie, the end scene that normally plays the 5 second "burn" sound byte has different sound clip. For some reason, the "burn" sound byte was completely removed from the movie. However, the sound clip is still at the end of the deleted scenes.

Dallas Olson, an SLS viewer, said, "I got my BMG letter today and when I opened it the featured artist was none other than Nine Inch Nails." They have a little review of the album, which he will send later today... the photo is of Trent in his car.

Russell Mills / Undark: Pearl + Umbra

Kraw was pricing some new releases at work yesterday and stumbled upon a Russell Mills album, the artist who did the paintings for The Downward Spiral and Closure. Kraw explained, "from what I've heard so far the album consists of mostly instrumental ambient soundscapes. Here's what the sticker attached to the CD had to say:

"Recalling the original efforts of This Mortal Coil, Russell Mills unleashes a textural soundscape featuring guests appearances from some of the biggest names in alternative rock, including PETER GABRIEL, THURSTON MOORE, ROBIN GUTHRIE, BRIAN ENO, BILL LASWELL, AND MICHAEL BROOK."

Although the "thank you's" in the liner notes are very brief, reserved mostly for people directly involved in the project, it was a let down not to see Trent Reznor mentioned.

After running a quick search on CDnow.com I found this blurb about the record, "The wondrous new aural assemblage takes up the challenge offered by the acclaimed 1996 album 'Undark'. All samples were kindly donated by such luminaries as Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, Robin Guthrie, David Slvian and more..." CD now also features 5 samples in streaming real audio format that are worth a listening to, for those who are interested in buying.

Old Trent Reznor Press Kit Photo

Kraw also wanted to share with us one of his Trent Reznor photos he recently acquired. "One of my coworkers used to work at a souvenir shop in Hollywood where they sold presskit photos of various entertainers," Kraw explained. "He brought in this picture of Trent for me. I'd never seen it before so I thought I'd share." The photo is dated 1992 (broken era).

Wes Borland of Limp Bizkit Influenced By The Fragile

In the March 2000 issue of "Guitar World," there's an interview with Limp Bizkit's slightly tolerable lead guitarist Wes Borland. The article is mostly about Wes' solo work. In the interview, he's asked, "Are there any bands that have specifically influenced this side of your musical interests?" Wes responds, mentioning Ween, Portishead, FSOL, Prodigy, Rabbit and the Moon, Aphex Twin, and the Orb. He then goes on to say "And the new Nine Inch Nails album, The Fragile, is unbelievable." How weird is that?

Dave Nailling, who first saw the article said, "Hopefully this disagreement between the semi-talented member of Limp Bizkit (Borland), and their shit-eating ape of a singer (Durst), will drive the group apart thus saving music!"

Students And Art Critics Review Marilyn Manson's Watercolors

The Australian based web site Addicted To Noise have brought together some experts, students to see value in Marilyn Manson's watercolor artwork. Below is just one of the many paragraphs found here in today's Addicted To Noise story.

"I have to admit, I liked them more than I thought I would," said Patrick Li, art editor for the art magazine Self Service, who detected the influence of Austrian painter Gustav Klimt in Manson's work.

"Some of them are naive in a way, but some of them are beautiful, quite brilliant," Li said. "They seem very detached, a little bit sorrowful. They definitely aren't about happiness."

"It's showable stuff," Max Henry, a columnist for artnet.com and contributor to Art in America, said.

Marilyn Manson, Priority Records Issue Solved

Things have been a little confusing the last few weeks about the whole Marilyn Manson and Priority Records issue and thankfully we seem to have a grasp on the complete story. The priority records deal is exactly this... Marilyn Manson WILL stay on Nothing Records, but the Priority Records deal is to sign bands Manson picks to be on it only and Godhead might be one of the first bands to be signed to the priority label. (Please read our November 20th headline "Godhead To Join Marilyn Manson's New Label" for more info)

Charlie Clouser Mention At Apple.com Using An Retro AS-1 For Past Rob Zombie Remix

Charlie Clouser is mentioned here at Apple.com using a Retro AS-1, a software synthesizer for the Macintosh that combines traditional additive synthesis with modern digital effects and none of the hassles or limitations of its hardware brethren.

What was hip then is hip again. Charlie Clouser, drummer, producer and keyboardist for Nine Inch Nails, recently used Retro on a remix of the song "Dragula" by Rob Zombie. "I used the distortion generator to create wavey distorted drones," said Clouser. "I can also get a great rapid-fire machine gun".

Live Sydney Cybercast, Video Cybercast and Channel V Trent Reznor Interview Next Month

Today is the Sydney Big Day Out concert, which is said to be featured online live at www.telstra.com.au/yell. We mentioned on January 15th, that the Australian based web site Addicted To Noise will broadcast Melbourne's Big Day Out festival live through a video cybercast on Sunday, January 30th at 11am (AEST), apparently today's gig will be too! (Please read our "Big Day Out LIVE Online" headline for more info.)

That's not all we should expect... Channel V, an Australian station, are to broadcast the BDO Sydney gig on February 5th/6th and repeat it on March 4th/5th. If you do not have access to Channel V, you'll be able to listen to a streaming real audio file here.

Channel V's Jabba, who have been travellin' all over the countryside, have been flying from city to city with the BDO festival collecting footage and pics and telling stories from behind the scenes, all of which you'll find in his diary on February 23rd at 7:30pm EST, on Channel [V]. The interview will include an interview with Trent Reznor among many other artists! The photo on the right is Trent talking with Jabba.

Trent Reznor Quoted Latest Rollingstone Mag About MTV's TRL

The February 17th issue of Rollingstone (#834) features a quick quote from Trent Reznor on page 16 about MTV's Total Request Live, written by Gavin Edwards:

"Congress hasn't badgered TRL, but some artists resent how much power now resides in what they see as a teeny-bop program that caters to the most trivial side of popular music. The fact that TRL is now an obligatory stop on a promotional tour can rankle; Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails has said, "As an artist and as a human being, I made a record that is the most I can make in my life. But I don't want to kiss Carson Daly's ass to get it played."

Danny Lohner & Charlie Clouser Interview On "Havoc 2000 Deluxe" BDO Special

D, a New Zealander SLS viewer, just finished watching the "Havoc 2000 Deluxe BDO special" which was just aired in New Zealand on TV2. "Havoc 2000 Deluxe" is a comedy/music/variety type of TV show with very laid back, amusing presenters. "Since the program is a laid back, amusing show and very disrespectful questions are asked," claims D, "the record companies management in Japan apparently declined a Trent Reznor interview, unless a serious script was submitted."

"The presenters, Havoc and Newsboy," adds D, "are like everyday people only more idiotic and amusing. Their show has no censoring, except for the 'C' word, which they were asking S-Club-7 what it meant in a recent interview. All in all a very amusing show."

Instead of a blistering/distasteful, yet hilarious interview with Trent Reznor, we get an uninformative interview with Charlie Clouser and Danny Lohner, "which was amusing, but edited a little disrespectfully," explained D. Although we don't have a real video file of the program, which we wish we could show, we do have a detailed script about what was asked, answered and the tone of the set thanks to D. Click here to read the transcript.

D explained, "The guys were treated with more respect than Dave Grohl [Foo Fighters] and his idiot drummer who they totally cut up and made to look like complete idiots, which they really seem to be." D also mentioned, "that when they interviewed Atari Teenage Riot, they pointed out the glasses she [The woman singer] was wearing come from a sweatshop." So much for anti-capitalism I guess.

"All in all, a most amusing interview," repeats D, "very, very uninformative, but I don't think many interviewers dare to make jokes and take the piss with bands as successful as NIN. So it was all cool and it was good to see the guys having fun and laughing a lot." D mentions that he thought it would been fun for Trent, "but it would have belittled his art a little too much I would daresay," declares D.

Russia Newspaper Features Marilyn Manson's Watercolor Artwork

Russia's and the world's biggest daily newspaper "Komsomolskaya Pravda" featured a small article on Marilyn Manson. Below is the translation:

SCARY PICTURES - Another rock-artist arrived

Marilyn Manson decided to demonstrate his artistic talents to the world. His pictures aren't in the museam halls yet, but they are exhibited on the Internet. Boy, it's a pity Nikita Sergeevich Khruschev can't see them, he would have told you what they're worth of.

We should mention that Nikita Sergeevich Khruschev was a Soviet Union prime minister. He is known to have critisized modern art. The author of the article wanted to show how modern Manson's art is, that's why he used that expression. The article features one of Manson's pictures, click the scan on the right for a larger image.

Thanks a lot to: ZZZombiE.

Official The The Artwork, Matt Johnson Interviews, Track Listing, Online Samples & More

Kraw, who is a good friend and source to SLS News, was given a copy of The The's debut album "NakedSelf" on Nothing Records over the weekend. Unfortunately, he hasn't had the time to review the album, since he borrowed it from a friend, but will soon later this week.

On the right is a small thumb nail map with 6 large scans (click for larger viewing), which include: slipcase front, jewel case front, slip case back, jewel case back, CD scan and liner notes photo of Matt Johnson; The The leader -- who created the act as a concept group. The new album is jam packed with photos, lyrics and liner notes. Although The The is now on Nothing Records, this album was not recorded at Reznor's Nothing Studios in New Orleans nor did Trent Reznor have any involvement in production wise of this record. Unfortunuately all the nice artwork and packaging is limited! Only the very first orders will be packaged with extra photos, etc, then the regular jewel case version will be all that's available.

Jeff, an SLS viewer, picked up the latest issue of CMJ magazine yesterday, the one with Zach from Rage Against The Machine on the cover. This month's issue features a small article/interview on The The, with an exclusive track on their promo CD. I presume it's the album's first single "Shrunken Man," which hits radio early February.

Here is the track listing to The The's first album in five years: "Boiling Point," "Shrunken Man," "The Whisperers," "Soul Catcher," "Global Eyes," "December Sunlight," "Swine Fever," "Diesel Breeze," "Weather Belle," "Voidy Numbness," "Phantom Walls," "Salt Water."

lunchbox37 informed us that Billboard.com listed The The as artist of the day, although they were listed Artist Of The Day for 3 consecutive days. Click here to read their fantastic and thorough interview with the British act. We should mention that the interview mentions that sometime before the release of the "NakedSelf," The The plans to participate in an online chat on a web site to be announced. There will also be promotions at retail and on The The's official web site (www.thethe.com).

Johnson couldn't say it any better when he speaks of record sales, "The best thing I've learned since I've been in this business is to have no expectations of an album's sales. It's a real pleasure making the music I want and working with the musicians I work with. Anything else is a real bonus."

The new album's direction coincides with The The's decision to sign with Universal-distributed Nothing Records. Johnson says of the change, "I came to the end of my contract with Sony. It was an odd situation: I finished the album but [Sony] owned it, and they said they weren't going to release it unless I made changes to the album and signed a new contract."

"I said, 'Well, then give me my album back.' I signed with Nothing because they seemed more passionate and very keen on my past stuff," he adds. Executives at Sony had no comment at press time.

The official news web site for The The features an electronic press kit (EPK), which is exclusvely released to the web that includes an interview with Matt Johnson (conducted by Zeke Manyika), audio clips from the new album, and some stunning visuals. Click here to play the 15 minute video. It's a very dark album.

The The's "Naked Self" has an official release due February 29th in the U.S. and February 28th internationally.

Clint Mansell Streamed Real Audio Work Coming Soon

We were contacted by the webmaster of the official Clint Mansell website "Clint At The Controls" that they heard from Clint this morning, "and there's a lot to update you on," but the majority of it will be in the c@tc email, "I'll be sending to the mailing list in the next couple of days," the webmaster adds.

"The big news is that Clint has cleared us to make the Atlantic Crossing demo available in full on the site," explained the webmaster. "This will give everyone the chance to hear Clint's new direction which will take some heat off my email box with people asking for an mp3 of the tracks."

The track won't be available to download, but they'll stream it using Real Audio. "It may only be available for a limited time, though," says the webmaster.

You can expect the streamed files online in the few days, other words... as soon as he gets a chance to do it!

Toronto Venue At Molson Park In Talk To Have NIN Headline Canada's Edgefest Tour With Smashing Pumpkins

We mentioned yesterday on our "Possible Toronto NIN Venue For Summer 2000" headline, that the Toronto based radio station "102.1 the Edge" explained NIN may hit Toronto around June or July at Molson Park.

We were sent an email, from a viewer who would like to remain anonymous, which explained the Molson Park in Toronto is a huge venue that has been home to Lollapooloza and Edgefest amongst many other festivals. The reason we have been getting letters about 102 The Edge talking about NIN playing the venue in June/July, is because Nine Inch Nails are in talk to co-headline Canada's Edgefest tour with the Smashing Pumpkins.

The edge radio station and house of blues concerts are responsible for the line-up even though it goes across country. This also supports our claim about NIN playing the Jammin' festival in Italy, because most of the previous bands on Edgefest play Glastonbury, Jammin', Hurricane, etc. in Europe before heading over to the great white north. This is of course a speculation, till they make any official announcements, but enough newspapers and online sources have hinted at this that it's a pretty good bet.

Beck is also expected to be on the tour. If you Canadians want to help secure this you can go to Universal Concerts web site at www.universalconcerts.ca and email them asking for NIN, Smashing Pumpkins, and Beck. Do realize that they're only interested in big mainstream rock acts.

NIN To Possibly Play San Antonio Mid-March After All!

Ric, an SLS viewer, checked out the official KISS 99.5 radio station web site after reading our January 21st headline "Possible US NIN Tour Problems" and discovered they are hosted on Broadcast.com, which host live real audio broadcasts for many radio stations across the country. Ric, who currently lives in Georgia, but lived in SA for 15 years, tuned in to his old radio station online to listen in! To his surprise the same late night DJ, who told the listeners that Nine Inch Nails would have to rethink their venues, because they weren't meeting the commercial success to fill up huge stadiums, corrected himself yesterday. "There is still a possibility that there will be a concert announcement in the near future for mid march for our favorite band Nine Inch Nails" said the late night KISS DJ and that he is "on top of it because he is a huge fan of the group," explained Ric. We have currently written the DJ, to ask if he would like to support SeemsLikeSalvation News with any upcoming radio concerts, dates, etc... We hope to have a reply soon.

New David Carson Interview Mentions Trent Reznor + Fragile Commercial Online

Holodeck 73 (H73) presents an exclusive interview with David Carson, who was responsible for the Fragile commercial, album artwork, live tour backdrop and much more. In this new interview by Matt Mella, Carson talks about his new book 'Fotografiks,' his upcoming official web site, web vs. print and of course Nine Inch Nails! Right now Carson is currently getting ready to go down to the West Indies and do a little surfing. "I've got a big project when I get back that I cant talk about," he says, "but you'll be seeing it throughout the year.........and still sortin out the site........." The entire interview can be read here, which we have featured the NIN snippet below for faster viewing:

MM: What was it like working with Trent Reznor (of NIN) and how did his music influence the direction you took with your design?

David Carson: Trent was great to work with. a really good experience. He told me about the album first- some of what went into it, and then played me about ten songs from it. I went away and began designing based on what I heard and felt, then began showing him things. there's no other way to design a CD package for me- the music HAS to influence the design-otherwise what's the point?? its the same way I worked at raygun-listen to the music, read the article/interview, then start designing based on what intuitively I've taken away from the experience..... with nin,.I also worked as an advisor on the web site, and supplied many of the images.....

As an added bonus H73 presents the David Carson Fragile commercial, which first debuted on MTV's '99 Music Video Awards on September '9th '99. David Carson collaborated with New York-based visual effects and design studio Manhattan Transfer to create a 30-second promotion for the Nine Inch Nails (NIN) album "The Fragile." 5.0 MB QT 2 (CinePak) Movie. Carson shot the close up Trent scene in a closet with a Hi-8 video camera. They had only 2 days to make the commercial. For more information about this commercial or other projects Carson did for Nine Inch Nails, please read our November 5th '99 headline "Full David Carson Details: New Backdrop Video For Tour, Explanations To Artwork & More" for more info.

Thanks a lot to: stacey.

Big Day Out Riot! Learn What Happened When 5,000 Fans Wanted Their Tickets When There Was Only 2,000 To Go Around!

Daniel Morrison, an SLS viewer, who wanted a ticket to the sold out January 26th Sydney, Australia Big Day Out, packed his bags and waited patiently outside the gates of the Ticketmaster Head Office to get his very own ticket and explained, "there was a mini-riot today when the BDO organizers sold off the last 2,000 tickets to the Sydney show." On January 17th, we mentioned in our headline "Big Day Out Sells Out; More Tickets To Become Available" that organizers announced the Big Day Out in Sydney on January 26th officially sold out. To alleviate pressure on stores and outlets, and to minimize scalper opportunity, they would release a final 2,000 tickets for the Sydney event. Apparently, things did not go well for Ticketmaster this morning and Daniel has the full report:

About 2000 people camped out in the city, the line circling an entire city block and a half. I couldn't help but notice a huge number of punters were wearing NIN T-shirts. There was drunken revelry during the night, a cool anarchic party atmosphere... however the cops weren't too impressed. During the night many more people joined the line, many queue jumping -- to the annoyance of people who'd been lining up for the past 48 hours for the precious tickets.

When the ticket office finally opened at 9am, the situation got downright nasty. There was a huge crush at the front door to the office, and the riot police were called in, along with motorcycle cops, the mounted police, and every other damn cop in the city. The police were very hostile, wanting to control the situation despite the fact that there were now 5000 punters present (according to JJJ radio) who knew very well there were only 2000 tix for sale.

I managed to short cut my way to the front by ducking underneath a mounted cop's horse while he was distracted, so I got my tickets. However, I couldn't help but notice on my way to the hastily organized back exit that two people were being tended to by paramedics.

I certainly hope the BDO organizers show more planning skills on the day.

Live 'Head Like A Hole' Video Clip At Official NIN Web Site

The official Nine Inch Nails web site has updated their "We're In This Together" video download section with a live video clip from New Zealand, Auckland of them performing "Head Like A Hole" on January 21st, '00. I would assume, after a few days, they will upload the second half to keep the visitors returning... so keep checking back!

Thanks a lot to: max, zack.

Charlie Clouser Brings Traveling Studio On Tour To Mix Tapeworm

James Goldsmith, an SLS viewer who will be submitting a copy of his demo to Nothing Records within the next two months, informed us that he met Charlie Clouser and Danny Lohner on Queen Street, Auckland sitting outside their hotel. "I stopped and asked them what they were up to," he adds, and they replied "sitting and watching the girls go by." James continued, "I then talked to them about 3 main things Tapeworm, NIN and music." This is what he had to say:

They said that Tapeworm had 4 songs completed with varying degrees of vocals, I think they said two of them had full vocals. They also said that there were a lot of other songs in varying states of completion. Charlie said that he had a traveling studio he took with him around the world that had tapeworm work on it. Charlie and Danny also wished me luck with my music, and we talked about computer software. They wished me luck with my music after I said that I was just finishing my demo before getting a live band to play gigs with.
If you remember from our January 5th update, "Charlie Clouser Focusses His Energy On Tapeworm" that Allstar News ran an article about how Clouser is truly dedicated to put this album out. Trent has promised us, which he said during the MTV Online Chat on December 22nd, that we can expect Tapeworm mid' 2000.

Alec Empire of Atari Teenage Riot Online Chat

We were sent an email from the guys holding an online chat with Alec Empire from Atari Teenage Riot at Juice.net on Tuesday, January 25th, at 7pm (Sydney, Australia time). They will be on for about an hour and want to answer your questions! To get there follow the link here to the web chat. Or if you can't join through there or you prefer to use IRC, you can connect through the IRC server: chat.juice.net and join #music. If you can't make it at all, send your questions to chat@juice.net and they'll ask them for you, which we'll then have the answered questions on SLS following the chat, thanks to le_pig & midijunkie. We should also mention that you'll go in the running to win signed goodies just for joining in the chat or sending through questions. Now doesn't that sound tempting?

Also, click here for a month old interview posted on Juice.net, which is relative to the Big Day Out festival. Not only are there interviews and such at Juice.net, there's also a free Starfuckers Inc. download, and NIN merchandise to be won!

They also wanted us to inform those who might care, that HARDKNOX will be joining Juice.net on Thursday, January 27th from 7pm (Sydney time) and Sydney's FRIENDLY will be chatting through lunch at 1pm (Sydney time) on Friday, January 28th.

Some good questions that could be asked is if ATR plan to tour with Nine inch Nails in North America or if you also remember from our January 4th headline, "Possible Atari Teenage Riot & Nine Inch Nails Collaboration" that Allstar News ran. Alec told Allstar News that he and Trent Reznor have a possible collaboration for an upcoming project! Now would be a good chance to see if these plans have changed or if they have grown into something official..., but make sure you get your questions in now before it's to late!!!

Thanks a lot to: le_pig & midijunkie.

Swedish Magazine "Noje" Interviewed Trent Reznor

Maria, an SLS viewer, submitted a translated October '99 interview from a Swedish magazine called "Noje." In this new interview, which you can read here, Trent Reznor talks more about his self-depression and a little about Marilyn Manson.

Trent Comments About His Live Show, While Richard Can't Stop Talking About Him

In the February edition of the British Q magazine there is a small article about Filter, in which Richard Patrick mentions Trent yet again:

"Around 1994 at the pinnacle of the success of the band, I decided, This is not my life. It was a mid twenties crisis", he explains. "Trent was always very condescending to me, like a big brother. I think he just wanted me to be his best friend forever. But enough of him, 'cos I'm giving him too much press and he never talks about me".
In the same issue there's a review of NIN's live performance that took place on November 28th in Tilburg, Holland. The show got four out of five stars, which means "Excellent. Definitely worth investigation".

In that review there also is a nice Trent Rezner quote included about his concerts. "It's like beating your head open and unzipping your chest cavity saying," claims Trent. "Here are my guts - everything I've felt, including a lot of stuff I'm not proud of. It's hard. It uses you up. I walk of stage sometimes and feel like I've just slept with everybody in the audience"

He also says that he will tour so much, because NIN doesn't get heavy radio time, and that he doesn't have MTV in his pocket.

Thanks a lot to: M. Alexander.

Japanese WITT Scans

Commy is back once again with some more Japanese scans, this time of the triple "We're In This Together" single. The artwork to the singles is no different than the other imports that we've seen, but just like before, the same Japanese company that produces their CDs feature the "Obi" strips down the sides.

Each case features a plain, white square sticker, which fans collect to be drawn in a lottery to win NIN imports. Commy says, "you need 3 different stickers for each application." All contents and designs are the same as UK (EU) version, which is also featured in a slim jewel case. Universal Victor Japan released the single on January 19th '00. The singles come equipped with English and Japanese lyrics in the backside of the jacket sheet.

Commy will be uploading her scans on her Japanese Halo archives later or you can just click our map on the right for further information.

Possible Toronto NIN Venue For Summer 2000

Zack, who lives in Toronto, wrote us to explain, "I was just listening to my local radio station, 102.1 the Edge. After they played the short edited version of 'Into the Void', they said Nine Inch Nails would probably be coming to Toronto in June or July at Molson Park." These aren't official dates; they're probably just speculations.

Into The Void To Debut on MTV's 120 Minutes

For all those who lost, forgotten, misplaced their copy of the Nine Inch Nails' breakthrough "Into The Void" video or haven't even seen the video, which debuted on "Total Request Live" last week. Now is your chance to tape again, hopefully one with out any small MTV logos on the right corner, on MTV's "120 Minutes" tonight. The show starts at 1 a.m (ET) / 12 a.m (CT). 120 Minutes' special guest this week is Moby.

They will be debuting 12 new video videos and judging by the list, Nine Inch Nails could quite possibly be third to debut: "Oasis," "Red Hot Chili Peppers," "Nine Inch Nails," "Moby," "Vertical Horizon," "Kittie," "Handsome Boy Modeling School," "Beastie Boys," "Folk Implosion," "Tam" and "Slipknot."

Thanks a lot to: nymphe.

Richard Patrick Says "Captain Bligh," Track Off Filter Album, Is About Trent Reznor

A new Richard Patrick interview just popped it's head out on DrDrew.com, which he has officially said that "Captain Bligh," track three off their new record, "Title of Record," is about Trent Reznor. Below is the blurb that Richard told Dr. Dew in a short interview.

DrDrew.com: The lyrics to some of the new songs deal with the end of this and other relationships?

RP: Yeah. "Captain Bligh" is an amalgamation of the mutineer and the mutiny. One is this stodgy, stuck-up captain, and the other guy is rebelling. On one hand, you have the greatest navigator of the Royal Navy, Captain Bligh, and because of his stuck-up inability to relate to his crew, he loses his ship, the Bounty. On the other hand, you have his first mate, Fletcher Christian, who ends up burning the ship and ends up on an island and will never go home again. So they both lose.

So in this song, I'm trying to examine why these male professional relationships fail. Maybe if someone made an apology or realized that they were doing something wrong--but instead, we always have this friction between people. So on one hand, Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails is Captain Bligh and I'm Fletcher Christian. I leave, but I don't have Trent to guide me. It can also relate to Brian and me. The bottom line is, why can't these things work out?

If you're interested in reading the rest of this interview, click here. I did a little searching and the lyrics can be read here and a real audio sample of "Captain Bligh" can be heard here.

Thanks a lot to: Danny.

Richard Patrick Sings "Ringfinger" in Paris/Mouths Off To Fans Coming To His Show Wearing NIN

Memorabilia, who will be contributing some LIVE NIN photos some time soon, wanted to inform us that she attended a Filter gig in Paris (at "l'Elysée Montmartre") on Monday, the 17th, "and at one moment," she said, "Richard Patrick looked at a guy wearing a Nine Inch Nails T-shirt." Then, just as he saw this fan, Richard said to the audience, "who dares coming to Filter's gig with a NIN shirt???", which he then broken into the 1st 2 lines of "Rinfinger" ('till "bleed"), and said again "This was my Elvis imitation of Trent Reznor"...

"He didn't seem really angry about people wearing NIN shirts," Memorabilia mentioned, "but in an interview I saw on French TV (MCM, ) he didn't want to say his opinion about 'the Fragile'..." The humorous part of all of this," Memorabilia explained, "is that some of Filter's lyrics were on the floor so that Richard could read them... But apparently he didn't need any reminder to sing 'ringfinger' again!"

Nothing Records Grand Opening

Nothing Records' promotion department sent out an email to those who are registered that the official Nothing Records web site will launch next month and that the US tour dates are around the corner as well. Don't forget you can vote for the Nine Inch Nails breakthrough video "Into The Void" here.

Review/Live Photos From The Big Day Out New Zealand Performance

You can find 8 live photos from today's performance here and perhaps a review of the gig later today can be found there.... In the meant time, we recieved our first review of the Big Day Out performnace, which I don't have time to inlcude in our World Tour Journal, until later tonight. So, I placed the review here for the meantime.

"They were great," writes David Malpas (our first reviewer) who saw NIN perform LIVE for the first, "played for one hour and 15 minutes. You got the feeling they were a bit daunted by the festival size crowd - but they still managed to pull off a stunner...."

The set list included: Head Like a Hole, Terrible Lie, March of the Pigs, Sin, Piggy, which segued into The Frail, The Wretched, Wish, Even Deeper, Get Down Make Love, No You Don't, Into the Void, Gave Up, Starfuckers Inc, Closer and finally Hurt.

Thanks a lot to: David Malpas, Daniel Nicholls.

Newly Discovered Jerome Dillon Interview

An old Jerome Dillon interview, which dates back to September '99, was thrown into the wet works just recently when Samantha Perez, an SLS viewer, did a little Internet searching. "I wasn't sure if you had seen it before," she writes, "but it gives some info about him and his background." The interview comes from the Columbus Dispatch, a local paper in Ohio. Below is a snippet from the interview;

"I dissected all of those parts on the old records on the drum set. In both of my auditions, I played a four-piece kit with one or two cymbals and just tried to destroy the drum set. . . . Everyone in the band has a philosophy: Play every note like it's your last. I've always been a big believer in that."
Check out the entire interview here from the official web site. Highly recommended, because it talks about how he was hired and some history on his previous band.

Thanks a lot to: Sam.

Natural Born Killers Burn Video Clarification

Will we ever know for sure, we do now! Apparently the DVD version of Natural Born Killers won't carry the Nine Inch Nails music video "Burn," although other publications said it would. (Read our January 12th headline "Burn Video Included With Natural Born Killers DVD " for more info.)

Ernest Leitch, an SLS viewer, was reading a review of the movie at www.thedigitalbits.com and the reviewer said, "The new DVD, like I said above, is a pretty good representation of the special edition laserdisc box set. Gone is the NIN video, but that's okay. The picture quality is a grainy non-anamorphic that shows the color off well."

Do you need more proof? Jeese, another SLS viewer, wrote in to explain, "I just wanted to let you know that I got my copy of the Natural Born Killers DVD today and it does not have the Nine Inch Nails "Burn" video on it." Oh well...

Reznor/Patrick Mention On MuchMusic

Yesterday, the band on MuchMusic Spotlight [a show where they focus on a band or artist and show videos and interview footage ], was Filter. Trent was mentioned, as always when Filter is on scene. The person from MuchMusic asked the band, "You know the trent reznor/nin thing, do you see this happening in your band, where everything goes patricks way", and one of the other band members responded with, "no not at all, i see patrick as the anti-trent."

Thanks a lot to: razorkill.

Two New Charlie Clouser Interviews

A brief Charlie Clouser interview from The Sydney Morning Herald's 'Metro' entertainment lift-out is in issue Jan 21-27 2000, which can be read here. Below is a snippet from the article:

The double album took four intense years to complete. Clouser puts that down to Reznor. "Patience is a virtue [working with Reznor]. We thought things were finished and he tore them down and them up again. Trying to get songs to the way he wanted them to, just beat us to death in the studio, and at no time would he make do.
When you're finished checking out the first Clouser interview, hop on over to the official web site for the Sydney Morning Herald to catch up on all their interviews by Mike Gee they have done for this years Big Day Out festival, which kicked off today! Check out our World Tour Journal soon for new reviews. Below is a snippet from the second Clouser interview:
He's definitely extremely intense in terms of his focus and drive and creativity," Clouser says. "It's not a nine-to-five job. It's wake-up go the studio, eat breakfast at the studio, stay there until it's time to go directly home to bed. It was like that for three solid years. A year of Manson [Reznor-produced Antichrist Superstar] and two years of our record.
Click here to read the interview from the Sydney Morning Herald web site.

Thanks a lot to: Neurophobe.

Possible US NIN Tour Problems

PaPa, an sls viewer, was driving home from work the other night when he heard on his local radio station in San Antonio {99.5 kiss} play 2 NIN songs, then after the 2nd song the DJ said that he had some bad news. Texas had been expecting NIN to kick off the US tour in San Antonio on March 8th '00 or so, it was going to be the first of the stations concert series, the DJ then went on to say that since The Fragile was not as big as a commercial success as they had thought it would be, NIN had to rethink how big or long the tour will be, the DJ said that even though the album was critically acclaimed it might not have the commercial success to fill up huge stadiums, like their local alamodome hall in town.

Into The Void Single Slipping

Unfortunately, the Nine Inch Nails single "Into The Void" has slipped one more position to 13 from 12 on this weeks 'Modern Rock Tracks' chart.

The The Review In Details Magazine

On page 85 of the February issue of Details magazine, music critic Jeff Ousborne reviews NakedSelf, the new cd by The The. It reads as follows:

It might be a good juju that The The's new disc comes a few months after Nine Inch Nail's stunning The Fragile. Both bands are essentially one-man projects, both specialize in serious soul mining, and both have a penchant for songs shaped as though they were hacked out of tin with hedge clippers. In fact, the savage opening riff of "Swine Fever" could have sprung whole from Trent Reznor's feverish brain. But where NIN's sprawling, grotesque album is redolent fo angry 14-year-olds watching "The Wall" in the basement, Matt Johnson's wry ninth outing seems self-conciously adult. That's not just because he's capable of writing lyrics in the third person, as he does on "Shrunken Man," a beautiful, spiraling song about a pathetic creature who wants nothing but to feel grown-up again. The maturity is also in the winter weariness that dominates the disc: On the brisk "December Sunlight," you can almost see Johson's breath as he sings, and his bracing acoustic-guitar figures slide off each other like ice sheets dropping off a giant berg. Although The The often makes deep thoughts danceable (remember 1989's glorious "Mind Bomb"?), NakedSelf is about as far away from a party album as you can get. The nervy "Voidy Numbness" (winner of the vaguest-title-ever contest) is a dismal and dissonant portrait of a frostbitten soul, right down to the shiver-stuttered vocals. Sounds like fun, right?

Thanks a lot to: Demanda.

Godhead To Join Marilyn Manson's New Label

On November 19th, a Nothing Records source of ours informed us that a band located in Washington D.C. called "Godhead" had a possible chance to be signed to Nothing Records, if not Maverick Records at the time. (read our headline, "Godhead A New Band To Be Signed To Nothing Records?" for more info.) Apparently, an SLS viewer, who has asked to remain anonymous, wrote us a week ago with some interesting news to add to this on growing 3-month story. "I signed up for the Godhead mailing list back on December 22 and posted the question: 'Are the rumors about Nothing Records scouting the band true?'" To his surprise a reply to his question was answered the following day from the band. "Sorry it's taken so long to respond, but yes; there is a possibility that the band will sign with a label that Marilyn Manson is considering starting, through Nothing Records."

After we learned of this new information, we quickly passed the story to our Nothing source so he could confirm since he was also friends with Godhead. Fortunately, he wrote back last night and it turns out it's true, well some of it! Here's the scoop, "Although the label will not go through Nothing Records or be connected in any way," says our source, "Marilyn Manson's label is going to go through Priority Records." The rap label that features such major acts as Ice Cube, Master P, Snoop Dogg and Mack 10, "seems that they want to start producing some rock music," adds our source. "From what I understand Godhead most likely will be signed to this label (no name for the label yet) and Tony Ciulla [Manson's manager] has some part in this as well."

Godhead's last album "Power Tool Stigmata" which contained an industrial cover of the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby", got some radio air play about a year ago. Since then they've toured with Jack Off Jill, GWAR, Christian Death, and Switchblade Symphony. As an added bonus the band got together with ex-Marilyn Manson guitarist Scott Puteski (AKA Daisy Berkowitz), and wrote a song titled "I Sell Society" which will appear on their forthcoming release "Two Thousand Years of Human Error." This will be a full-length release of 12-15 songs, featuring appearances & contributions by Reeves Gabrels (of David Bowie, Tin Machine), and others. Producer Reeves Gabrels and engineer Danny Saber (NIN, Manson) are expected to join the project says the official Godhead web site.

The The Album Update

The The's new album "NakedSelf", which hits the streets on February 29th, will be to be shiped on February 17th.

Thanks a lot to: Ario.

College Top 35 Albums of The 90s

Will, an SLS viewer, who atteneds a college prep school in california, explained his school newspaper released a "top 35 albums of the 90's" list a few days ago. "NIN was almost absent on the list," he adds, "but actually managed to reach #32 with downward spiral."

"Album: The Downward Spiral Artist: Nine Inch Nails.

Trent Reznor's chokingly cruel descent into the frustration that haunts all men, "The Downward Spiral" is the most nihilistic statement in the world of rock. The pain of his soul is layered meticulously in the defining sound of industrial. Incessantly pounding drumbs combine with abrasive guitars, and masculine synthesizers to form one whole coherent album which proved to be a sign 'o' the times."

"I find that review just slightly cliche of people dealing with nin albums," writes Will. "TDS was right between Remy Zero's "Villa Elaine" (#31) and Oasis' 'What's the Story (Morning Glory)' (#33... GAG!)" Will continued, "The whole list looked like it was plucked right out of a Rolling Stone article, cuz most of the stuff was the kind of music that only snooty record execs like because its really 'intellectual' and 'deep'. Radiohead got #1, with OK COMPUTER."

David Lynch's Birthday!

Fellow Nothing Records fans may want to know that today is David Lynch's 54th Birthday!

Modern Drummer Interviewed Jerome Dillon

Modern Drummer interviewed Jerome Dillon for their March 2000 issue. The interview features new photo of Jerome, which he talks about his musical beginnings with a band called "Howlin' Maggie" and how he made the transition from straight out rock to nine inch nails. A pretty short interview, so that pretty much sums it up.

Thanks a lot to: Alex D'Astous.

MuchMusic Aired 'Into The Void' On Ed The Sock's Smash or Trash

On MuchMusic, the "Into The Void" video was featured on Ed The Sock's Smash or Trash segment. What they do is bring in a few people off the street, show them a video, and they vote whether it was a smash or trash. Well, "Into The Void" was voted as trash by all three viewers. One girl said they song was great, but the video didn't do justice to it. Ed the Sock said it was really different then any other video he has seen, but didn't think to kindly of it.

Thanks a lot to: Scott Blackmore.

Charlie Clouser, Danny Lohner & Robin Finck Photos From The Paranoia Cafe Nightclub

Commy informed us today that she received a letter from the manager of the Paranoia Cafe nightclub, which held the official NIN club party last month in Japan. The letter said the midnight of January 12th Charlie Clouser and Jerome Dillon visited this club, and Robin Finck and Danny Lohner visited the following night.

The official web site for this club features the photos they took of the gang when they visited, but the manager was unable to capture a photo of Jerome, because he went back to his hotel.

Also on January 13th, there was also the drummer of RHCP, and members of LIT partying in the club. "Everyone enjoyed their time," said manager Hashimoto, "But unfortunately, Trent didn't appear."

Also, on January 29th, they are holding another official NIN club party.

NIN Auckland Big Day Out Timetable

James, an SLS viewer, informed us that, "Nine Inch Nails are playing the Auckland Big Day Out festival at the 8:00pm - 9:15 time slot." Last year Marilyn Manson took this time slot, "which he walked off 15 minutes early after a whole lot of crap going on during sweet dreams and his mic," adds James. The main headliner for this year's Big Day Out is the 9:15 - 10:30 slot, which is taken by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Last year this slot was taken by Hole.

Atari Teenage Riot are on at 12:30 - 1:15, Basement Jaxx and a New Zealand band HDU, "which are both bands that lots of NIN fans like," adds James, "are both playing at the same time as nin." As always the last band to go on is the dance headliner this year, which are of course the Chemical Brothers. Last Year it was Fatboy Slim.

New Danny Lohner Interview

New Zealand's The Press Online featured a new interview with Danny Lohner concerning "The Fragile" and the differences between the tour and the band. This article was published last week (Fri, Jan. 14th) in the Christchurch Press in NZ as part of the buildup to the Big Day Out festival in Auckland this week. Below is a sniipet from the interview:

"Make no mistake, Trent is the man behind each album. He's got such a strong over-all vision of what he wants to achieve. He's got this way of hearing things which very few people have."

Trent Reznor Rock Hard Interview Online

We mentioned on January 14th (please read our headline "Trent Reznor Interview Rock Hard Magazine" for more info) that there was a new two-page Trent Reznor interview/article in the January edition of Rock Hard. Sabrinia, our European friend who first told us about this, has translated the entire article, which can be read here. Below is a snippet from the interview:

Who do you protect in the lyrics to the title track?

"Above all, myself. For a long time, I was known as the asshole of the rock scene, and people went out of my way. They were scared. And rightfully so. I was violent, snapped at everyone and constantly confirmed my image. There were hardly any boundaries. "The Fragile" now transmits a completely different picture of me, and of course that also has its consequences."

Big Day Out Web-Telecast Update

John Raptis of the Australian NIN site, Happiness in Slavery, informed me that he is the one who actually designed the Big Day Out web-telecast we mentioned on yesterday's news. Raptis explain that the BDO telecast will be at the Telsta Youth site, The Telstra site and the Australian Addicted To Noise site (another one he has designed and maintains daily at www.addicted.com.au.) We will keep you posted with more information about this web-telecast as time ticks by among many other things....

Big Day Out Timetables

Australian fans who are more interested to see Nine Inch Nails perform, the Timetables to the Big Day Out festival were released and Nine Inch Nails will be playing the 7:30 PM to 8:45 PM time slot in Sydney (Jan 26th), which is usually the time slot given to the main headliner of the festival. We hope to report all the times on our next update.

Thanks a lot to: Rabea Khan.

Total Request Live Voting Ideas Get Evil

We had two viewers submit some ideas about what we can do to cheat the online Total Request Live voting system. This is what Dante had to say, "If you have aol and want to be able to vote for into the void multiple times, go to tools and scroll to internet options and then security. Then hit customize scroll till you find cookies and change them to prompt. Whenever you're on the mtv site and get a prompt about a cookie simply hit 'no.' Evil I know, but I read about it on some girl's website and she said she always did this to vote for the boy bands. i say we strike back."

(V)att Ferguson also had this to say about online voting for Into The Void, "MTV's website uses a protection thing to keep people from voting multiple times for one video. The way they do this is by keeping track of your IP adress. This doesn't, however, work for Roadrunner (or other cable modem) users because everytime you restart your computer roadrunner assigns you a new IP adress. Therefore, should anyone with roadrunner care to vote multiple times for Into The Void (in attepmt to get it on TRL) they can vote once every time they restart their computer. Hopefully this is of some use to someone."

Shift Magazine Mentions Official NIN Site

In a magazine called Shift, they have this regular feature called "the shift list" in which they name the top 15 websites of the issue. In the January/February issue, nin.com is featured as number 10 (first time on the list) with a category description of "sound" and an one-line blurb that says "The music of Trent Reznor meets the design of David Carson."

At the bottom of the list, it suggests posting your thoughts about the picks of the issue at www.shift.com or e-mailing the magazine.

Thanks a lot to: Jacqueline.

No Halo On Australian Into The Void Single?

Peter Mason, an SLS viewer, noticed something about the new Australian "Into The Void" single, "there doesn't appear to be any HALO references on the cd or the cover," he says. "Seeing that every NIN release, except for PHM, has the HALO and it's number plasted on any blank surfaces this seems a tad bit strange." Maybe there is a good reason for this...?

Into The Void Scene Captures

Just yesterday the official Nine Inch Nails website, which sports a new red and black background, have been displaying multiple Into The Void scenes randomly hidden throughout their pages.

In hope to get this video #1 on the "Total Request Live" countdown, you can begin voting for Into The Void over at the Play My Video section of MTV online. Voting multiple times does not work by the way.

We have currently uploaded 40 large captures from the breakthrough Into The Void video, which can be viewed here. We will eventually upload more later this week...

Interscope Records has asked us to forward or collect reviews, thoughts, dislikes, reactions about the new video from the fans, which will then branch into a new page we are currently constructing. If anyone has any extra thoughts about how to get Into The Void #1 on the count down, please include them in the review. We assume the video will be available to download on the official site very soon. You can catch the video again tonight following the #2 most voted video on "Total Request Live" at 9:00PM EST.

Please submit your thoughts here.

Thanks a lot to: Papagolash, doug, HCCChris, travis, fate.

Nine Inch Nails "Into The Void" Is An MTV "Breakthough" Video

A public relations representative at Nothing Records informed us yesterday that the second Nine Inch Nails music video "Into The Void," directed by Walter Stern, will be a breakthrough video. Stern is perhaps best known as the man behind The Prodigy's "Firestarter" and "Breathe" videos. The video, which we mentioned on January 10th, will debut today on MTV's "Total Request Live" at 3:30PM and again at 9:00PM. You should possibly expect the video to debut following or prior to the second most voted music video on the countdown. Hopefully the official Nine Inch Nails website will feature the video just as they did for "We're In This Together."

Live NIN Video Footage To Air On Australian Television

Although it has yet to rerun in American nor debut in Europe, Australians are to get their healthy dose of the live Nine Inch Nails European footage that aired on MTV on December 22nd. Here's the scoop from the official Rage website:

Broke Box Contributed Cover Songs For Marilyn Manson Tribute Album

Broke Box, who covered "Wish" for the Nine Inch Nails tribute album "Radiant Decay," wrote us yesterday to explain that they too, including "Bile" and "American Head Charge," have contributed two cover songs for the upcoming Marilyn Manson tribute album, which are "Cake and Sodomy" and "Reflecting God."

Patrick, from Broke Box, also mentioned that he too recorded another track, "Antichrist Superstar," for the tribute with his solo project "Razorblade Smile." Patrick's track also features guest appearances from Richard and Robert "Spooky Kid" Pierce. For those of you who may not remember who Robert is, he appeared on three tracks on the "Portrait of an American Family". According to Patrick, "Richard Pierce is now in Rednecks on Drugs, which includes Daisy Berkowitz in their lineup."

We'll keep you updated as the news continues...

To Bleep or Not to Bleep Starfuckers

Katie, a Kettering, Ohio resident, wrote us to explain that she picked up her local newspaper yesterday to discover that the entertainment section featured a small article called "To Bleep or Not to Bleep" about NIN and the Grammys.

"It will be interesting to see how CBS handles the Grammy Awards when it airs live on Feb. 23 should Nine Inch Nails win Best Metal Performance for Star------- Inc. After all, the profanity is part of the song's title. NIN frontman Trent Reznor, a former Clevelander, is also up for Best Alternative Performance for his highly anticipated The Fragile, despite disappointing Billboard numbers. Let's hope he wins, even if he loathes such honors. Rumor has it his first Grammy is hanging from a noose in his New Orleans home." -Amy Etmans
Although the part about the Grammy and the noose is ridiculous, lets hope Nine Inch Nails win their categories!

Machian continued to explain that, "Burning Inside was done by the Omaha band juror 13."

Yesterday was the Celebrity Deathmatch rerun with Trent Reznor vs. Puffy Combs. While this episode was a couple years old, it was perfect timing, with Puffy having legal troubles & Trent on tour. Trent Reznor Interview Rock Hard Magazine

There's a two-page NIN/Trent interview/article in the January edition of Rock Hard, a German magazine, along with a fairly large close-up live shot of Trent (TDS tour). "The article is ok," writes Sabrinia who bought the issue, "although they, or should I say Trent, rehash a lot of stuff we already know, like how fucked up he felt during the last tour, what the Fragile's about, the Manson thing etc." Sabrinia will translate some of the stuff or so-called quotes which she thinks are fairly new, or at least more interesting than what we've read a 100 times. "Or maybe I will end up translating the entire thing," she adds. "I know that this interview hasn't appeared in American publications," she continued, "since it was taken in Hamburg when Trent was doing the promo press tour in Europe."

Charlie Clouser Interview In TimeOff Magazine

TimeOff Magazine, a Queensland, Australia street press magazine, features Trent Reznor on the front cover, with a full page article about the live tour, on stage chaos, mini studio recording rooms and more by the words of Charlie Clouser. A highly recommended review, which gets pretty humorous at times, such as the blurb we feature below:

"You're definitely free to assault anything except Trent and Trent is free to assault anything. You've definitely got to keep one corner of your eye peeled to see if [Reznor's] arming himself with a water bottle or if he's headed your way. (Guitarist) Robin (Finck) and (guitarist, bassist, keyboardist) Danny (Lohner) take more of a beating than I do because I'm protected. I'm on a keyboard riser and my keyboard stand bolts down. So if Trent wants to flip me he's got to take the whole riser over which he's tried to do a couple of times. So I have a little bit of protection not from water bottles coming my way but at least from full-on, shoulder-checking tackles. But we had to redesign Danny's keyboard stand so it didn't have these sharp handles sticking out on one side because he feared that he'd get impaled on them if Trent attacks him from behind."

Thanks a lot to: Robert.

New Information Concerning Marilyn Manson Tribute Album - Ministry Tribute Album On The Horizon

We were sent an email from a member of the epic aural freakshow, "American Head Charge," who will also be appearing on the as yet untitled Marilyn Manson tribute album, which we mentioned yesterday. Please read our headline "Vitamin Records To Release Marilyn Manson Tribute Album" for more info.

"We contributed a blistering cover of 'Irresponsible Hate Anthem," says Aaron Zilch. "We wanted to do 'Little Horn' but they had not licensed it so we did 'Hate Anthem.' I don't remember exactly which tracks were on the list but they were mostly the singles." They also contributed an extended cover of "Filth Pig" to the Ministry Tribute album "The Devil's Work," which should be out soon. "If you would like to hear one of our other songs check out our page here at mp3.com." Their official homepage www.headcharge.com is currently down, but should be back up shortly. "We are an aggressive 7 piece from Minneapolis, Minnesota who are grabbing the attention of the music industry and I'm sure that fans of Nothing Records artists will enjoy our mix of melody, brutality, and technology."

Manson's Watercolor Artwork Reviewed In Latest Kerrang! Magazine

In this weeks issue of Kerrang! magazine, is an article about Marilyn Manson's watercolor artwork, which they had them reviewed by one of Britain's leading art consultants. Ben Austin, who owns the Catto gallery in London's Hampstead and directs his own art-dealing company, checked out Manson paintings on the website and shared his views.

"They're interesting." he said. "His work is disturbed, but that's to be expected! Even so, they're not very shocking. Even the man with two penises is hardly on the level of the Chapman brothers, who take children's dolls and replace the boys noses with phalluses and the girls mounths with vaginas! Manson's not showing a great deal of technical ability." he judges, "but he's got a good feel for it. I wouldn't write him off as an artist at all. What he's doing is quite limited, but effective."

What would Austin compare Manson's creations to?

"David Bowies artwork, and German expressionism - tortured souls in the style of Edvard Munch. Manson has probably also looked at Jean Michael Basquait, the black New York artsit who died of a heroin overdose."

Just as we thought that Austin was about to offer Manson a million pound contract - enabling us to profit a tidy ten percent - he threw a spanner in the works.

"The commerciality of it is another matter," he added. "Bowie's audience are generally succesful 40 somethings. Manson's audience tend to spend their money on black make up and drugs, and their parents are unlikely to splash out on paintings by someone the see as the Antichrist!

Watercolors don't generally fetch more than £500 or £1000 if you're unknown," he said. "but because it's Marilyn Manson, these could sell for £2000 each, tops. If he was to work in major oils or acrylic on canvas, that could up it to £6000."

Thanks a lot to: Mr Pogo.

NIN To Possibly Play "Rock im Park-Festival" In Nürnberg/Germany

Julian, a sls viewer in Germany, read yesterday in his local newspaper and at www.rock-im-park.de that Nine Inch Nails will perhaps play at "Rock im Park-Festival" in Nürnberg/Germany! "It's one of the biggest Festivals in Germany," he adds. "Bands like Korn and Samshing Pumpkins will play, too!"

WFNX Top 400 Songs Countdown

101.7 WFNX in Boston held their top 400 songs of the decade countdown, which started January 7th and ended January 10th. Nine Inch Nails made their list ten times with these songs:

378. "Dead Souls," 338. "Sin," 309. "We're In This Together," 300. "Terrible Lie," 294. "March of the Pigs," 247. "The Perfect Drug," 210. "Hurt," 126. "Down In It," 18. "Head Like a Hole," 2. "Closer"
Marilyn Manson's "The Dope Show" also made the countdown at number 138.

Fragile Ranked Third Best Album of '99 By Music of the New Generation

Sabrina, who was recently in Asia, returned home back last week and managed to take a glimpse of the new issue of "Music of the New Generation".

"I told you about their 'best cd's of the 90's' thing," she writes, "where TDS made #19." Sabrina continued, "Well, this issue has a countdown of the 'best cd's of 1999' and The Fragile came in at #3. The Chemical Brothers and Death in Vegas came in at #1 and #2 respectively... all of the above leaving Limp Bizkit FAR behind (I think they were somewhere in the #50s)."

She was pleasantly surprised that The Fragile was ranked that high. "I used to live in Asia for a while and still travel there when I have time," she adds, "and if you didn't know better (ie. if you listen to radio), you'd think that everyone there listens to Michael Bolton/Mariah Carey/boygroup crap (I do know for a fact that there are a lot of people over there who listen to GOOD music; it's just not as mainstream as it is in the States)."

The New Yorker Ranks the Fragile One of the Top 12 Albums of the Year

In the December 27th/January 3rd issue of The New Yorker, they list their picks for the top 12 albums of the year. They are not numbered, and The Fragile is the fourth album mentioned. The reviewer had this to say about The Fragile:

"Five years in the making, and more than a hundred minutes long, this massive electro-shock opus is the kind that used to come in a triple gatefold with book-length liner notes and a poster. Assultive, angst-infused, and often infantile, Trent Reznor has finally proved that machine music can make for nakedly human rock and roll. 'Underneath it all/We feel so small,' he sings on 'The Way Out Is Through.' But surrounded by rolling synths and cataclysmic drums, it hard to recall any album ever feeling bigger."

Thanks a lot to: Infshame.

Dany Lohner Credited On "Methods Of Mayhem" Album

Tommy Lee's new hip-hop/rock album, "Methods of Mayhem" credits Danny Lohner (guitarist, bassist, keyboardist of NIN) in the liner notes of the booklet. It seems that he plays guitar on one of the album's tracks. The credits don't say exactly which song it is, but all guest artists are listed "In Order of Appearance". Going by that, "I believe the song Mr. Lohner is on would be a track called 'New Skin', which also happens to feature Kid Rock. We hope to have an official answer soon...

Official The The Press Release: Album Street Date, Single News, United States Tour In April, Europe Tour Dates & More

Nothing Records sent us an official The The press release yesterday about their new album "NakedSelf" set for a February 29th, 2000 release on Nothing Records. Their first single ShrunkenMan, hits radio early February. All The The's late '99 tour dates sell-out, garner rave reviews.

We thought we should mention ( Thanks to Brian G. DeLue) that Tricia Halloran, who reviews alternative albums for the Ultimate Band List, predicted that The The's new CD would be the best of 2000. This is what she wrote:

"BEST RECORD OF 2000: I'm not psychic, but I know this already. I caught futuristic band The The in a preview show at the Mercury Lounge in NYC recently."
She also included links to a concert review for The The and a preview of the new album, although nothing is there.... You can find a more positive The The concert review from LeisureSuit Live, which reviews their show in at the Middle East in Boston last month. Check it out here.

Europeans who are interested to see The The perform live in Europe, below are the current tour dates, thanks to the help of Keith Duemling of SmashedUpSanity's Nothing Is Next website.

01/24/2000 - Rotterdam - Nighttown
01/25/2000 - Amsterdam - Melkweg
01/27/2000 - Paris - New Morning
01/28/2000 - Antwerp - De Singel
01/31/2000 - London - The Garage
02/02/2000 - Copenhagen - Small Vega
02/03/2000 - Hamburg - Gruenspan
...and now to the official Nothing Records press release concerning The The's new album:
January 11, 2000, New York - nothing records has announced a February 29th release date for The The's NakedSelf. The The's first album on nothing, NakedSelf, is produced by Matt Johnson and Bruce Lampcov, and was recorded in NYC. It is The The's 9th full-length release. First single "ShrunkenMan" goes to radio in early February.

Late last year, Matt and his band Eric Schermerhorn (Iggy Pop) on guitars, Earl Harvin (MC900 Ft. Jesus) on drums, and Spencer Campbell (Kenny Rogers) on bass completed an intimate, sold-out East Coast tour, offering fans a sneak-preview and garnering rave reviews. Following select dates in  Europe, The The will embark on a full national tour of the United States in April.

To date, both the album and the live shows have been praised by critics:

" NakedSelf delivers beautifully"
Alternative Press, January 2000

"...Johnson's songwriting gifts and his (self)-lacerating edge remain strong.  There is both a visceral rock 'n' roll kick and a sense of lurking menace in what The The concocts."
- Boston Globe, December 8, 1999

" a lean, mean monster of a record as potent a recording as Johnson has ever made."
 Providence Phoenix, November 26, 1999

The The has garnered universal critical acclaim for its music and passionate social commentary.  Supported by a cast of players that have included former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, ex-New York Dolls David Johansen, and singers Sinead O'Connor and Neneh Cherry, The The have spent two decades releasing innovative records that have spanned every style from punk to industrial to mutated country and blues.

Matt Johnson's debut album, BURNING BLUE SOUL, was released in 1981 under his own name. As The The, Johnson followed with THE PORNOGRAPHY OF DESPAIR (1982), SOUL MINING (1983), INFECTED (1986), MIND BOMB (1989), DUSK (1992), SOLITUDE (1994), and the Hank William's Sr. tribute HANKY PANKY (1995).

Thanks a lot to: Jesse.

Manson One of the Top 35 Bands of the Last 35 Years

In the 35 anniversary edition of British porn magazine, Mayfair did a feature on the top 35 bands over the last 35 years who have "Endevored above and beyond the call of duty to bring sex into their shows and generally outrage the moral majority." Marilyn Manson was featured with the caption:

"Freaking out everyone at every opportunity, making each show a festival of nakedness and inviting porn stars to sing on his album Mechanical Animals."
The bands were listed in alphabetical order, with no numerical placings such as Courtney Love (as opposed to Hole), Korn (because of Jonathon Davis "boasting about his large collection of anal sex videos") and even the Spice Girls (for "making red-blooded blokes everywhere spend months deciding, as Eminem put it, 'which Spice Girl I want to impregnate'").

Thanks a lot to: Mr Pogo.

New Audio Trent Reznor/Danny Lohner Interview Online

NINjaw, an SLS viewer, wrote us to explain that he recently inquired an uncut 18 minute video interview with Trent Reznor and Danny Lohner just before the Paris, Zenith gig on November 25th. MCM, who filmed the program for their "Journal de la musique", only featured 3 minutes, but NINjaw was sent the entire interview from an anonymous source, which is currently online in mp3 format. [8 megs] Unfortunately he was unable to boost the quality of the video interview, so the video interview became an audio interview, with two screen shots on his website.

NINjaw may have difficulties translating the interview, so if there is anyone reading who might like to translate it... please write NINjaw here

He was also able to put a far better video of the exclusive '94 french interview+live tracks on his website for eager fans to download. While you're over there check out the live professional photographs from the Paris gig as well.

Outburn Magazine Reviews Demystifying The Devil

Chris Nicholas, the director to the unauthorized Marilyn Manson home video "Demystifying The Devil," sent us some new review scans about his controversial video. The latest reviews, which can be read here, come from the last issue of Outburn Magazine, a national gothic style magazine, featuring Peter Steele from Type O Negative on the cover.

Vitamin Records To Release Marilyn Manson Tribute Album

Just as Vitamin Records are soon to release the Nine Inch Nails tribute album "Radiant Decay" on January 25th, they will release a Marilyn Manson tribute album later this year. The only lead we have so far, is that BiLe, an independant band, will be covering "Tourniquet", according to their news page off their official website at www.teknowhore.com.

The singer and the guitarist of Bile have been longstanding fans of both NIN and Marilyn Manson. We hope to have some new information about this new tribute album in the next few days.

Thanks a lot to: Garrett.

The Fragile Attacked by Christian Magazine

KDawg, an SLS viewer, discovered a Christian mag wrote on page 64 in their February 2000 HomeLife magazine an article written by Bob DeMoss, their entertainment writer. "It's pretty stupid as it never says anything about the music," writes KDawg, "it just talks about how the lyrics are non-Christian, as if Trent was supposed to do differently."

It has been four years since we last heard from Nine Inch Nails (NIN). Four wonderful years, I might add. Now, with the release of The Fragile, NIN uncorks chaos and despair for another generation. Lead singer and primary lyricist Trent Reznor launches the two-disc set with "Somewhat Damaged." Here, we find him lamenting, "Lost my faith in everything... drink the fountain of decay." In the title track he adds, "If I could fix myself I'd [sic] / but it's too late for me."

Trent's view of God provides a clue as to the source of his inner turmoil. In "The Wretched" he contends: "The clouds will part and the sky cracks open/ and God himself will reach his [expletive deleted] arm through/ just to push you down/ just to hold you down."

An interview with RollingStone noted that Reznor has cleaned up his drug usage, gotten a hair cut and now pumps iron. Though commendable, these external measures cannot fill the void in his soul.

Day Two: NIN Take Their Second Stab in Tokyo

Commy, from ThePerfectDrug website, just returned back from the second Tokyo Bay NK Hall gig and unfortunately things did not go well for Nine Inch Nails' second Japan performance. Mic stands ceased to work properly, keyboards smashed... utter chaos! Fortunately, the performance played on successfully...

One new song off "The Fragile" made it's way onto today's set list, than yesterday's set list, which was "Please" including an older B-side Queen remix off the Sin single, "Get Down Make Love."

Commy also picked up three Nine Inch Nails tour T-shirts, which a small photo of the Fragility Flower can be seen on the right. Click the following links to view her newly inquired memorabilia: Fragility Flower, Fragility2000, Japan Tour Dates. Unfortunately, these shirts and more are currently exclusive to the Fragility tour, but we'll let you know when these become available through Weathermen Records.

"The Dope Show" No. 7 on MTV Russia's "Best of 1999", Boy Band Wants To Cover "The Beautiful People" & More

ZZZombiE, one of our many European news contributors, wrote us to explain that Marilyn Manson's "The Dope Show" came in at No. 7 on MTV Russia's "Best of 1999" chart show. Unfortunately, he didn't see the rest of the show, so he's unable to say who was ahead or behind Manson. But still, it's a very impressive result.

He also saw a segment of an interview with 5ive, a British boy-band, "where they mentioned that they would love to do a cover of Marilyn Manson's 'The Beautiful People.'"

A while back there was a "Monsters of Rock" weekend on MTV Europe where they featured a lot of different shows about rock bands and one of them was an interview with Skunk Anansie, where they discussed their music and picked out their favorite videos. "So during the interview," writes ZZZombiE, "Skin, the singer of the band, talked about Marilyn Manson. She talked about them for about 2 minutes or more and said a lot of good words about Manson. Not only does she like their music, "but also understands and supports what Manson is saying in his songs," ZZZombiE explained. "She said a few words about how stupid those attacks on Manson are, that music should not be responsible for people's actions." Following the interview, she picked Marilyn Manson's music video "Coma White" as one of her favorite videos. ZZZombiE will eventually transcribe the Manson portion of the interview, since he has it on tape.

NIN Drum Media Interview Transcript

We mentioned yesterday that we would eventually have the Trent Reznor article/interview in this weeks free Drum Media, Australian music magazine, online today. In this new interview, written by Lauren Zoric, Trent Reznor talks about sacrifice, the Self-Destruct tour, playing the Fragile live, and how NIN interferes with his desire to have a "normal" life. The last two paragraphs are interesting when you consider the lyrics from Even Deeper.

Click here to read the entire interview.

Thanks a lot to: danm.

Hednoize Featuring Charlie Clouser Online at TVT Records

The entire Hednoize album called "Searching For The End" is available for free download (in Windows Media File format) at the TVT Records official.

The album was supposed to be released in the spring of 1999, but it is still not officially out today!

Hednoize is a dark pop electronic band signed on Wax Trax featuring Daniel Lenz (from the techno band Psykosonik) and vocalist/keyboardist Free. Charlie Clouser provided additional programming on the track "Pay No Mind."

"The album is really excellent," writes Morpheus TechnoPagan, "it is a mix between the more melodic side of NIN and the moodier moment of Depeche Mode."

FrightX Reviews Unauthorized Manson Video: Demystifying The Devil

The latest issue of FrightX magazine, a national movie, music, and video games magazine, features a new review of the unauthorized Marilyn Manson home video, "Demystifying The Devil," which you can read here. Those who interested in ordering can find the video at the Demystifying The Devil website.

Random Nothing News

Heather Montgomery, an SLS viewer, wrote to explain that she has discovered some interesting news about Melissa Joan Hart from "Clarissa Explains It All" and "Sabrina The Teenage Witch". In the February 2000 issue of Teen Magazine there is an article about Melissa Joan Hart and her sister. A question and answer quiz is given to each of the sisters. One of the questions is "What is your sister's favorite band?" to which Emily, Melissa's sister replies "Nine Inch Nails." In parentheses following it, it states "Right On! Melissa loves Trent Reznor's band."

Recently on MTV's "Sex in the 90s" Manson was shown talking about masturbation, and said that he enjoyed it because he "didn't have to thank himself afterwards" and pogo was sitting beside him rocking back and forth and he added "or cuddle..." The interview is many years old, as Manson had long hair and pogo was bald with his long goatee.

"Today on the Howard Stern radio show," says lunchbox37 who was listening, "they have a regular on there called bettlejuice. When he was coming onto the show, they played Meat Beat Manifesto's 'Helter Skelter 97' off of Original Fire.

Into The Void Video World Premier

The second Nine Inch Nails video "Into The Void" is slated to debut on MTV's "Total Request Live" on Friday, January 14th. TRL begins at 3:30pm (ET)/ 2:30pm (CT). I would presume, "Into The Void" will debut following the 3rd music video as always, but things could be different since the last time I watched for a debut video.

For those who might be remotely interested, MTV has updated their TRL "Play My Video" page so online lookers can vote upon the yet to debut video. It's next to impossible to nock the pop boy/girl bands out of their daily position, but try anyway... you never can tell!

Thanks a lot to: paul fisher.

Boy George Comments ABout Marilyn Manson

In an interview with Boy George on Scotland Today news, he was asked about the controversy he caused when he first entered the music scene because of his look. "He replied with saying it was to liven things up a bit," adds Andy Finnan who saw the show, "he found the world of pop to be dull." He then commented on the same thing happening with modern pop. And how the only person that "dresses up" and stands out Is Marilyn Manson.

Scans of NIN Tribute Album: Radiant Decay

Kraw, a reliable source and good friend to SLS News, was lucky enough to get his hands on an advance copy of "Radiant Decay: A Tribute To Nine Inch Nails" yesterday and thought he'd share his first impressions of it. This is what he had to say:

If you get past the idea that Trent is God and nobody should really be messin' with God's creations, I think most NIN fans will find this album "enjoyable".

the album is composed of obscure artists trying to do justice to NIN's work, PHM through TDS. The results range from "as close as possible" covers to drastic "I'm an artist too" variations on the classics. Thankfully, few have made the dumb mistake of trying to outdo Mr. Reznor.

One of the most dramatic changes to a NIN song comes from Tin Electric with "Hurt", where they have made an attempt to take on the question "What if 'Hurt' had appeared on Broken?" The answer seems to be Gravity Kills would have written the song. Still, it's kinda fun hearing "Hurt" sped up if you don't think about it too much.

At this point (I've had the CD for all of 6 hours now) the stand out tracks on the album feel like "Closer" and "Sanctified", both redone by Transient. First off, they've got a female vocalist (Issa Joone) and Trent's words don't seem glaringly out of place when she sings them. "Closer" is a bit more "rockin" than the original. More guitars etc. "Sanctified" has got a slightly different beat but its still sounds very PHM. The vocals really make them for me though.

This collection is pretty cool as whole and if I weren't a sneaky bastard who got it for free, I'd probably put out the money for it. It's a hell of a lot better than the version of "Terrible Lie" that Trixter did back in the day.

Even though Radiant Decay certainly isn't God's work, it's not quite heresy either.

The album officially hits the streets Tuesday, January 25th on Vitamin Records.

Import Pretty Hate Machine On Nothing Records From Canada

Weathermen Records thought major NIN fans out there might want to own a special import version of Pretty Hate Machine, by none of than Nine Inch Nails. We spoke about this story over the summer, which finally arrived at the Weathermen's doorstep. The item is Halo 2 Canada, which is unique in two ways. The first is that the disc itself comes with full color artwork as opposed to the black and white packaging the U.S. version carries. (It is said the reason the majority of PHM and all the singles off this album were black and white was because of TVT- their previous label) The other is that it is not on TVT records, but on Nothing Records none the less, which gives it a different catalog number. The disc is quite colorful and would make an addition to anyone's collection. You can order the import album at TheWeathermen.com.

More Information Concerning NIN To Play French Summer Fest

NINJaw, an SLS viewer, wrote us yesterday to explain that a friend of his, who is a major NIN fan just like himself, works at the TV channel MCM (the French MTV...) and recently learned that Nine Inch Nails should be on "Eurockeennes de Belfort" their main French Summer Festival... For more information about the talked about French Summer Festival, please read our January 7th, "European Festival Representative Claims To Have NIN Perform This Year's Event" and/or our January 6th, "Rare Manson Photos & Possible NIN European Festival Tour News In Kerrang Magazine" headline.

Alejandro Jodorowsky Interview, Mentions Marilyn Manson

Ain't It Cool News features an interview with Alejandro Jodorowsky, the directer slated to direct Marilyn Manson's film "Holy Wood," which he discusses a little about how he likes Marilyn Manson.

"I like this guy. His videos are very artistic. I don't know what is his musical value, but I like the optical values. He always is breaking the limits, no? Art is always amoral. And he seems apersonal, this person. He's something that's further than a human being.... I think he is kind of a genius, literally..."

Thanks a lot to: Third3rd.

Half Page Spread Nine Inch Nails Advertisment

Kraw also attached an advertisement, shown on right, of Trent Reznor performing "The Frail" during the European Fragility tour. This black and white advertisement can be found in the current issue of the LA weekly, a popular news/entertainment paper for the Los Angeles area.

The Fragile Certified Double Platinum?

It seems the RIAA have jumped the gun quite a bit and have certified The Fragile double platinum although this weeks SoundScan estimates read The Fragile has only sold 631, 498 units in 15 weeks. Apparently the RIAA is off by a million units... Well, for those of you who don't know, there's a discrepancy in the way SoundScan and the RIAA operate. SoundScan tracks exactly how many copies are bought by consumers, while the RIAA tracks the number of CDs shipped to retailers--not how many are actually purchased. So, technically, both can be correct.

As we mentioned previous times on SLS News, double-albums each count twice for sales by RIAA standards. So when The Fragile sells 600K copies, it actually counts as 1.2 million. That's reasonable, since double-albums usually cost twice as much.

Although The Fragile hasn't truly sold 2,000,000 units, that a normal double platinum album would, the Fragile has made quite a rise on the Billboard 200. According to SoundScan records, The Fragile takes an astonishing 19-position leap up the charts from last weeks 141 spot to this weeks resting point at 122. Considering that's a giant leap for a band like Nine Inch Nails, and especially since it was at 158 two weeks ago. We should consider that two weeks ago from today was Christmas and for the most part, the holidays always have a major influence on the charts.

For those who are wondering about the fine line between RIAA/SoundScan, it's not really a record company policy--the RIAA is a separate body. The records are technically sold when they're sent to the retailers, but again it's a real fine line...

Thankfully, there should be a world of a difference in sales once NIN tour North American this year...

European Festival Representative Claims To Have NIN Perform This Year's Event

Davide Oberholtzer, an SLS viewer, wrote us to explain that his girlfriend showed him an article recently in an Italian magazine called "Panorama" which described NIN's growing popularity in Italy. The article also said that after the success of their Milan concert in November, a representative of the Heineken Jammin' Festival, held every June in Imola, Italy, claimed that he was able to get Nine Inch Nails for this summer's playlist. This update regards our yesterday announcement (Please read "Rare Manson Photos & Possible NIN European Festival Tour News In Kerrang Magazine" for more information.) that NIN may be involved with European tour festivals. Marilyn Manson and Hole were one of the two major acts who played at the '98 Heineken Jammin' Festival.

Into The Void Video, Into The Void Single Chart Stats & Into The Void Single Update

We have it on good authority that the new Nine Inch Nails' video "Into The Void" is near completion and will debut in the next week or two on MTV. We'll keep you posted on a confirmed date...

While Nine Inch Nails leave for their 15 hour trip to Japan/Australia today, their third single "Into The Void" slowly, but surely climbs the Billboard Modern Rock Charts back home, which currently rests at #11 from #13 since last week.

Weathermen Records sent us a small update about the Into The Void Australian single import. They said that it will be made available in Australia on Jan 31st, 2000 and all orders will ship around February 5th. You can preorder at www.theweathermen.com. Those who aren't aware, the track listing is as follows: Into The Void, We're In This Together, The Perfect Drug and The New flesh.

Slipknot Percussionists Comments About The Fragile & Praises It

Shawn Crahan, one of the percussionists for Slipknot, and Joey Jordison, the drummer, are asked 'What's the hot CD's in your player right now?' in an interview with AntiMTV. Although Joey says, "The new 'Amen' record is really good and the new 'Accused'." Shawn commented, "And I got to say, the new Nine Inch Nails, weather you like them or not, is an awesome album."

You can read the full interview here, which rants on about Fred Durst and other odd things you wouldn't have known about them if you didn't read this interview.

Senator John McCain Defends His Like of Nine Inch Nails

It seems that former U.N. Ambassador Alan Keyes was trying to tell Senator McCain that Nine Inch Nails was a bad influence on people, which McCain tries to make the best of the situation.

Below is a blurb from the Washington Post article:

"Don't you think that as leaders we ought to be a little bit more serious about the kind of influences that are now destroying the lives of our children, and before we open our mouths, we ought to know what we're talking about?" Keyes asked.

McCain responded like a contestant on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?"

"Can I get a lifeline?" the Arizona senator quipped. He said he wanted to confer with his 15-year-old daughter, who recently accompanied him to the MTV Video Music Awards.

NIN Fans Take A Walk In New Orleans & Share Their Findings

Richelle, an SLS viewer who vacationed a little over a week in New Orleans for the new year celebration, wrote us an interesting story about how she and her friends, April, Erin and John took a stroll over to Trent Reznor's Nothing studios and then to his Garden District Mansion. She will have pictures of this event later on her website here: Sweeter Than The Sun

"One day we went up to the Nothing studios and took a few pictures outside of the building while we all made faces at the security cameras," she explained. As their curiosity grew, they took some long looks through the windows. While they looked closely, she said she could see "a computer with lots of crap on it and a TV playing footage of a live concert, pictures on the walls and lots and lots of packages."

Before they were about to leave, her friend April exclaimed, "there's a dude on the floor" and sure enough, "someone was crouched on the floor doing something," which they couldn't really see. Although her friends were finally about to leave, Richelle knocked on the window. "The guy looked up and came over and stuck his face in my face and smiled."

"You wanna let me in?" she said, which he responded with an apologetic shrug. As she began to pout he came to the door to say, "Sorry, but we can't let people in anymore because some people came in once and caused a whole bunch of shit" he explained. "He said his name was Tim and he stood at the door with us for a long time talking about New Years and he asked us how it was back home in Canada," said Richelle. "He was really polite," she adds. He then told them he had some goodies and went back inside." He then came back out with four nine inch nails t-shirts," she said. "We thanked him and continued on our way."

Later that evening they took a stroll over to Trent's mansion to snap a few more photos. "It wasn't until I had taken a couple pictures that I noticed a face looking back out the window. Not a Trent-face," she explained, "but a doggie face!"

"It was Trent's dog Daisy and she was looking back at us excitedly," she explained. "April then pointed out that there was someone else on the couch with Daisy," which Richelle looked over to meet eyes with Trent. "He was just kinda lounging on the couch with Daisy curled up at his feet. While Trent watched them awhile from afar, "Daisy ran up to the window and wagged her tail happily."

As Trent remained on the sofa, looking out at them for a long time. Richelle explained, "He got up after a while, walked around in front of the window stretching a bit and then went over to the door and let Daisy out into the yard." She bounded out to greet them, which then they decided it was time to head back, "because we didn't wanna seem like psycho stalkers," she added, so they continued down the sidewalk.

"At that time," she adds, "we heard someone beside us holler 'get away from here!' and we turned to see Tim from the studio, smiling back at us," she explained. "We smiled and continued on our way."

Unofficial Multimedia NIN Theme

Nine Inch Nails fans, who like to cram just as much NIN multimedia on their computers as I do, check out ThemeDoctor.com for a completely original theme package to hit the internet.

The brand new Fragile and Fragility tour related theme, which I must say is by far the best NIN theme out there, contains startup and shut down screens and wallpaper of photos of Trent on tour from the Fragility tour, which are made very artistic, sounds from the Fragile, and video clips from the "Were In This Together" video as the busy cursor, along with an interesting screen saver. On the technical note, the theme website describes the contests with two different theme environments with high color JPG wallpaper images for 1024x768 or 800x600 display sizes, two sets of startup/shutdown logo screens in self-installing LogoZip files, two sets of original NIN cursors and icons, a screen saver, two sets of web view images, and audio files in MPEG Layer-3 compression.

Rare Manson Photos & Possible NIN European Festival Tour News In Kerrang Magazine

The latest issue of Kerrang! magazine features a rare Manson photo pullout, which was done as a series of five A3 and A4 posters. Unfortunately the posters are on the back of each other, so it's only possible to display three at a time, unless you buy two or more copies...

The dates the pictures were taken (this is by the number on the pictures, rather than what they're saved as) are:

1. September 1996, in Manson's first photo session for Kerrang! taken in Cleveland
2. October 1996, first Kerrang! session with the full band
3. May 1997, on the roof of Manson's hotel, Washington DC
4. 1992, band promo photo
5. 1999, the most recent photo session with Kerrang!

Elsewhere in the issue was a feature called the Hot 100, giving details on what the top 100 rock acts plans are. The section on Manson reveals nothing new, but the Nine Inch Nails sections say that they may be joining the European festival tour in the summer.

Also both Manson and NIN were featured several times in the review of 1999.

Thanks a lot to: Mr Pogo.

MTV2 Airs Every Music Video From A - Z

MTV2 has been playing EVERY single video ever made from A to Z by Song Title. So any videos anyone does not have, will more than likely be on at some point. "They are at about the end of the A's right now," said Eric who caught the video for "Asbestos Lead Asbestos" by Meat Beat Manifesto last night.

Charlie Clouser Focusses His Energy On Tapeworm

According to Allstar News, we shouldn't expect anymore remixes from Charlie Clouser for a while, because Tapeworm, the long-awaited, much-reported Nine Inch Nails side project, is apparently getting more attention than ever before, and "Clouser's bandmates won't let him forget about that," says Allstar News.

Allstar News conducted an interview recently with Murray Engleheart, which Clouser said, he's spending the spare time he would normally have to make a few extra bucks with a remix on Tapeworm "because every time I would be doing a remix, [NIN guitarist/bassist] Danny [Lohner] would hear it through the wall and come in and give me shit and say, 'What the hell are you doing that for? You should be working on the Tapeworm shit that's in your computer waiting for you to mix it!' So I've had enough of the damn guilt trips and I'm only working on Tapeworm for the next few months."

Possible Atari Teenage Riot & Nine Inch Nails Collaboration

Allstar News recently interviewed, Atari Teenage Riot's Alec Empire, which he discussed a possible collaboration with Trent Reznor following the Australian "Big Day Out" festival that kicks off in less than 20 days.

Although Allstar News didn't make it clear if it would be strictly a Nine Inch Nails collaboration or a Trent Reznor collaboration, big difference there, it is still very tentative since it was an, "Oh, yeah, we should do that" kind of talk said Alec.

Even though fans really didn't care for ATR's opening performance during the European tour, they are tentative to open for Nine Inch Nails once they tour America sometime next month or the month following, says Alternative Press online. Read the reviews, strait from the fans during the European Fragility tour about what they thought of ATR.

Trent Reznor Graces The Cover of Machina Magazine

What a way to break into a new year, millennium I should say, with Trent Reznor gracing a cover of yet another magazine... This time being the January issue of a polish music and more magazine called "Machina." The magazine features a four page long article and interview with Trent, which the interviewer describes Trent as a nice shy guy, and Trent talks about his original housing problems (the Tate house and the New Orleans ex-funeral parlor studio), why he writes his lyrics only when being in a bad mood ("It's better to throw it all out (into lyrics) then to put a gun in your face" - as Trent said in the interview), about The Downward Spiral's main meaning and The Fragile's main meaning ("The Fragile is about getting to a point where all illusions end. Thanks to that I respect myself a whole lot more now"), about Marilyn Manson crossing the line between shock and silliness (when the interviewer asked Trent does Manson know where that line is, he answered: "I don't have to. I'm not a rockstar". He also mentions that he isn't the next Ian Curtis (lead singer behind Joy Division who hanged himself in 1980), and NIN isn't the next Joy Division, and that he isn't walking on the brink of suicide.

Thanks a lot to: Kamil and Marta and M. Alexander for the scan.

MSNBC Ranks The Fragile Seventh Best Album Of The Year

Kevin O'Hare, music writer for Newhouse News Service, submitted his Top 10 pop music albums of 1999 and rated The Fragile the seventh best album of the year. This is what he had to say, "After two years in studio seclusion, Trent Reznor, the industrial art rocker behind NIN, has come up with a sprawling double disc that's filled with frenzy, fever, anguish, rage and paranoia."

Below is his top 10 picks:

1. Rage Against the Machine, "The Battle of Los Angeles"
2. Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Californication"
3. Wilco, "Summer Teeth"
4. Luscious Jackson, "Electric Honey"
5. Nas, "I Am..."
6. Continental Drifters, "Vermilion"
7. Nine Inch Nails, "The Fragile"
8. Steve Earle and the Del McCoury Band, "The Mountain"
9. The Roots, "Things Fall Apart"
10. Pretenders, "Viva El Amor"
On a side note, art flick "Julien Donkey-Boy" directed by Harmony Korine, who directed "Gummo," a favorite film by Marilyn Manson, was ranked 4th out of the year's 10 worst movies.

Thanks a lot to: Io.

RollingStone Reader's Poll: Best Album, Honorable Mention For The Fragile

The latest issue of RollingStone hit the streets today which included a reader's poll and mysteriously the Backstreet boys swept all categories including Artist of the Year, Band of the Year, Album of the Year, Single of the Year, Best Video, Best Dressed, Best Tour and Biggest Hype. The mysterious part is that the Backstreet Boys album cannot be found anywhere in the RS weekly readers poll located in the back of the issue (and never has). Kind of interesting that a band who has seemingly been of no interest to RollingStone readers suddenly sweep all the poll categories, when a contest comes up. Perhaps this may have something to do with the fact that the Poll forms were online for the first time this year and of easy access to anyone, including record executives, family, corpotations and fans that have no interest in RollingStone Magazine whatsoever. Seeing a pattern here with MTV's TRL? Hmmmm. Anyway, Nine Inch Nails' The Fragile came in at #2 for Album of the year behind The Backstreet Boys. The Fragile also made #4 on the Critic's list of best albums this year.

Thanks a lot to: NINXPX.

Even More Millennium Countdowns And Album Rankings

Nine Inch Nails had all of their records mentioned on the WBER Rochester countdown, who did a phone/email/written survey on the local area or anyone who listens to them over the net. The highest-ranking NIN albums were 'The Downward Spiral' at #9 and 'Pretty Hate Machine' at #2 only to lose to Nirvana's 'Nevermind.' Strangely enough, 'The Fragile' was somewhere in the 50's and 'Broken' somewhere in the 200's. "All of the DJ's who were on at the time said that they own the P.H.M. or had so at one time," says Doozer who was listening. "I myself voted for the 3 NIN albums and Marilyn Manson's 'Portrait of an American Family' and Meatbeat Manifesto's 'Actual Sounds and Voices'," he adds. "Since you could only vote for 5 albums I feel the bases were covered."

The Baltimore/Washington D.C. area radio station, WHFS 99.1, which is also my local radio station, recently counted down the top 500 songs of the 90s. Obscur Phil Bono / Charlie Clouser co-operation?

An interesting biography was discovered here, for those who aren't aware, on Phil Bono, frontman and songwriter of "The Sharkskins," which reads in the first chapter that "He has recorded and performed with a wide variety of artists and songwriters ranging from Nine Inch Nails keyboardist Charlie Clouser to Television/Matthew Sweet guitarist Richard Lloyd." I'm sure some of those reading this might have heard about this collaboration with P. Bono / C. Clouser before, but the unofficial webmaster to the #1 Charlie Clouser website has not and is in search for more information about this collaboration. If anyone out there has more input to this story or if Charlie eventually produced or remixed one song of Phil Bono or his band "Ghost Shirt Society", please write to Morpheus TechnoPagan, who maintains "Charlie Clouser - The Remix Files."

The Philadelphia City Chose Plaid Fourth Best Album In Techno/Electronica

The Philadelphia City newspaper rated the top 5 albums on page 23 in the Techno/Electronica division in their December 30-January 6, 2000 issue, which included Plaid.

l. Thomas Brinkmann/Soul Center
2. Theorem/Ion
3. Richie Hawtin/Decks,EFX&909
4. PLAID/Rest Proof Clockwork (Warp Records): A soothing synthesis ranging from smooth jazz to synth-pop to funkadelic and hip-hop. Flowing, washed-out guitars, corky synth sounds and some occasional cuttin' and scratchin' develop the constantly evolving mood of the album--from somber and heart- broken to chirpy and childish.
5. Stewart Walker/Stabiles

It is said to to be just drum tracks and some added noise such as screaming and screaching that wrestlers David Flair and "Crowbar?" have been using... gawd....

SPIN Magazine Readers Poll & Various Artists' Picks

The February 2000 issue of Spin magazine with Fiona Apple on the cover features its 1999 readers poll results in which NIN was praised highly. We have only included the categories in which NIN show up (with a couple Limp entries for our own personal amusement). Below are the results:

Best Band: Nine Inch Nails
Trent edged out Limp Bizkit and Korn who placed second and third.
Most Overrated: Limp Bizkit
Second place went to Kid Rock with Britney Spears coming in this.
Best Album: Nine Inch Nails, The Fragile
Second place is Tori Amos and third goes to Limp Bizkit
Worst Album: Limp Bizkit, Significant Other
Second went to Kid Rock, and third worst is Britney Spears
Most Annoying: Britney Spears
Second went to Backstreet Boys and bring up the rear (heh) was Fred Durst, with a little comment from Spin that Durst is "pushing 30".
Also in the feature are various artists' picks for favorite albums, singles, etc. Everlast and Shirley Manson (Garbage) both included NIN's The Fragile in their top five albums of 1999.

Thanks a lot to: NINXPX.

Possible NIN Canada Venue During The Summer of 2000

The Toronto based radio station, The Edge 102.1, said a few days ago, prior to playing 'We're In This Together' on their station, the fact that NIN had just finished their European tour, and that after they tour in Australia and Japan, they'll be starting their North American tour. That we know, but what was interesting was that he said, "We can expect to see them here in the Toronto area in June or July", and went on to talk about what venue they would play at such as the Molson Park near Barrie, Ontario, which is a venue NIN played in '94. Gotta take it with a grain of salt, though... he might just be connecting the dots instead of relying on real information.

Thanks a lot to: Warren Schrey.

Into The Void Chart Position

NIN has maintained position #13 for another week on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks with 'Into the Void.' #13 is also the peak position of 'Into the Void.'

NIN/MM On TRL '99 Countdown

In MTV's "Top 99 of 99" MTV counted down the top 99 videos of 1999 by amount of votes submitted to Total Request Live over the year. Nine Inch Nails' "We're In This Together" rank was 77 and Marilyn Manson's "Rock Is Dead" was at 58. Predictably, the Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees, and Limp Bizkit made numerous appearances on the countdown, but NIN and MM were the only representatives from Nothing Records.

On Saturday's rerun episode of "Saturday Night Live" was one of the many Mary Catherine Gallagher skits, the scene was in a bathroom, and on the trashcan in the background was a NIN sticker. Michael, an SLS viewer who saw the program, said, "When I saw this on TV, I ran straight to the computer to grab my digital camera... it's pretty cool."

Latin American Special: The Fragile Used To Promote Music Video Program

Latin American Mtv has been promoting a weekend special to take place on Saturday, January 8th, using the Nine Inch Nails track "The Fragile." The show will feature musicians choosing their favorite videos for us to watch while they discuss them... Ironically, Trent does not appear in the ad, "and it seems doubtful that he will be in the special," writes JC who saw the commercial. So, Latin American's keep your fingers crossed.

Speaking of all these Millennium countdowns. MTV and Latin American MTV and I assume every ethnic MTV station around the globe has been airing their "Top 10 of the 90's" shows, and one of them was "Revolutionary videos", and NIN's "Closer" came in at #7. The list went as follows: 10. Living on the Edge - Aerosmith, 9. Sabotage - Beastie Boys, 8. Like a Rolling Stone - Rolling Stones, 7. Closer - Nine Inch Nails, 6. Street Spirit - Radiohead, 5. Losing My Religion - R.E.M., 4. Let Forever Be - The Chemical Brothers, 3. Even Better Than The Real Thing - U2, 2. Freak On a Leash - Korn, 1. Virtual Insanity - Jamiroquai. They aired two extra clips, which were Madonna's "Frozen" and Massive Attack's "Teardrop".

Thanks a lot to: Juan Carlos Fuentes.

Trent Reznor Praised in Keyboard Magazine

Keyboard Magazine's newest issue (Jan 2000) lists the 25 giants of keyboard music, which includes Trent Reznor and praises him... Below is the text from the article. The photo in the magazine is of him with halo above his head...

Trent Reznor
No musician did more for electronic music in the '90s than Trent Reznor. Not only did he write and record a string of groundbreaking records (Pretty Hate Machine, Broken, The Downward Spiral), he did so during the height of guitar/grunge mania, at a time when the "own a synth, go to jail" mentality prevailed. His anguished, snarling vocals inspired an army of hardcore synth pretenders.

Trent forged a path through the era like a wrecking ball. "Maybe synthesizers are considered unfashionable these days," he said in 1994, "but I don't give a fuck." And he didn't. While other bands hid their keyboards offstage behind a curtain, Trent brought them front and center. His songs and productions were brilliant beyond words. Today, a decade after his mainstream debut, he shows no signs of decline. The latest Nine Inch Nailes release, The Fragile, debuted at #1 on The Billboard 200.

Village Voice: Much To Do ABout Nothing Records

The New York City based newspaper, Village Voice, has published a disturbing article on December 29, '99 titled "Sugar High" as part as their column section. These 7 paragraphs analyze the past relationship between Tori Amos and Trent Reznor. Although this article is already online on a few other unofficial Tori Amos website, fans from these sites have raised concern about the New York paper and have responded to Jane Dark, the editor, pretty negatively.
