Thanks ever so much to: Commy

Select Magazine - NIN Interview Online

Darryl, an SLS viewer, has transcribed the article from the November 1999 issue of 'Select' magazine. There is also a review of 'The Fragile' in this British magazine that the viewer has also transcribed, and it's included with this update.

This is an interesting little article, nothing too new or earth-shattering but, it's interesting to hear Reznor's comments about his fall-out with Manson. He almost seems sorry about the whole thing. Plus, it is surprising to see the Colarado shootings linked to Reznor, still after all this time you would think scapegoats of this nature would have been put to rest...

Select - Fragile Review
Select - Trent Reznor Interview

Thanks a lot to: Darryl.

NIN Buys 25 Controller Keyboards For Upcoming Tour

On October 25th, Sweetwater Sound, one of the biggest pro audio retailers, ran a technical tip of the day about why Nine Inch Nails recently bought 25 controller keyboards from them for Trent Reznor to use on the first leg of their tour, which kicks off in 15 days in Barcelona.

The guys from Nine Inch Nails recently bought 25 controller keyboards from us for Trent Reznor to use on the first leg of their upcoming tour. Why 25 you ask? They figure that will get them through the first 25 shows. Hopefully he'll only destroy one per night. While this is an extreme example, the moral of the story applies to everyone. Always have a spare or some solid contingency plan for what you will do when (notice use of the word "when") gear fails. For this Nine Inch Nails tour there is literally going to be at least two of everything. If any part of one keyboard rack goes down, there is an identical rack waiting to be inserted in its place. The specific problem with the rack that went down can be sorted out later. While these methods are appropriate for their circumstances they are probably somewhat extreme for most musicians, but the point is the same: always have a good contingency plan. As much as this is a no-brainer for live performance, I'm always amazed to find that studio owners don't realize that they are also in a live performance. Anytime you have clients in your studio that's as good as a live performance. If the hard drive on your hard disk recorder goes down in the middle of a session what are you going to do? Always have spares and backups of critical and volatile equipment. The equipment we use these days is so incredibly inexpensive that there is truly no excuse for a professional to not have a good backup plan. And keep in mind that brand new gear is actually more likely to fail than gear that has been in use (see Infantile Failure).

Thanks a lot to: Mika.

Random Nothing News

SisManson, an SLS viewer, saw the new horror film, "House On Haunted Hill" last night. When it got to the part where the guest list was being changed on the computer 'Sweet Dreams' started to play low and gradually got louder. A good portion of the song was presented in the actual movie. They also played Manson's "Sweet Dreams" while the credits were rolling.

Thanks a lot to: SisManson.

The "We're In This Together" NIN video rises one more spot on the MuchMusic countdown at 23 from 24 last week. I also thought I would mention that many radio stations around the country, such as The End, 107.7 in Seattle have begun to promote "Into The Void" as the next single off The Fragile, just as we have reported on October 16th. My local radio station, WHFS, played "Into The Void" twice yesterday evening.

Thanks to: shawnoneill, Yaz,ian.

This random news piece has nothing to do with our news, but I thought I'd mention since this program has been on our updates a lot recently. The Box Network, according to Rollingstone, was bought out by MTV. The Box was the first to debut Marilyn Manson's "Astonishing Panorama Of The Endtimes" claymation video beating MTV by a few days because of scheduling conflicts says Marilyn Manson's management. "Apparently, competition is a four letter word" says Rollingstone. The Box was also the only station to play Manson's "Portrait Of An American Family" videos (Dope Hat, Lunchbox, etc) before Manson got big. Steve, an sls viewer, wrote in to say, "It was a really good station when I used to get it. MTV just plays to what's big (and even then they don't play the full fucking video)," said Steve. "Box played a lot of the more perverse stuff," he adds.

Thanks a lot to: jason, steve.

Trent Reznor Interview In Zillo Magazine

A german music magazine called "Zillo" features a large interview with Trent Reznor in their latest issue, 5 pages long. There's not much new in it, except that he is still working with Dr. Dre on some material. He also confirms that Richard Patrick will be a part of Tapeworm and that "a big part of the Tapeworm material is already finished". He's also talking about the US-Media (and the Bullshit they're writing), the 'Starfuckers, Inc.' Track (which he claims as a Joke!), and his Nothing Studios.

Thanks a lot to: nils.

Manson CD Advertisement & Limted 2CD Box Set

On the right is an advertisment for Mansonīs Live CD which can be found in two German Magazines: The german issue of 'Rolling Stone' and a magazine called 'Zillo'.

The very funny advertisement shows a picture of a total destroyed microphone stand which is claimed as it is from the concert in Munich last Summer (The 'Riot' - one) and the slogan reads "I Survived".

The most interesting thing about this advertisemnet is, that it says there will be a limited 2CD Box Set, including unreleased & new tracks.

The live album, "Last Tour On Earth" is released in Germany on November 15th.

Thanks a lot to: nils.

Japanese Tour Dates Soon

Commy, our ever friendly overseas source from ThePerfectDrug website, has learned that a Japanese coordination company told her that they will have some new details about the Japanese Tour later this week, but when she checked their site it said, "more details will [be] out in the next week." Commy told SeemsLikeSalvation, "I'll get some more details, for example all tour dates and each hall name in the next week. When I getting an information, I'll let you know, surely."

Thanks alot to: Commy.

The Fragile Certified Platinum

According to Billboard Online, The Fragile is certified Platinum with shipments of one million units! Now as we mentioned last week, read our October 15th headline "The Fragile Is The Most Successful Selling NIN Release To Date," this does not mean that one million people have bought The Fragile. Nor does it mean that even 500,000 people have bought The Fragile. It's complicated to explain, but hopefully our October 15th update can nock some sense in to ya if you're not following. But we should celebrate, because we are playing by the same rules and standards that make Britney Spears and Limp Bizkit "multi-platinum." Unfortunaly, among all this good news The Fragile has droped to postiion 43 this week on the Billboard 200 charts.

Thanks a lot to: NINXPX, Damaris, Dilldoid.

Trent Reznor Graces The Cover Of Pulse! Magazine

Tower Records very own free monthly magazine, Pulse!, features Trent Reznor on the cover of their November issue. The 8 page article was conducted while Trent Reznor was at the Bahamas for the week this summer, which was written by Bill Forman. The article is called "Fun In The Sun With Trent Reznor" and the interview is from "down on the beach, warm Caribbean waters." The article extends from pages 42 to 5l with new photos, which we'll have up soon. This interview is similar to the Rollingstone issue, not a straight forward Question and Answer interview, but quotations throughout.

Here is an excerpt from the article:

"One thing that's come out of this record is that I'm not as cripplingly shy in the studio," says Reznor. "I have more confidence. I can work with other people now and not be so intimidated that I can't make a sound. I feel a lot more confident on a musical level. In the future, I'm really aiming towards becoming involved in much more collaborative situations, outside of Nine Inch Nails and maybe even within Nine Inch Nails. I like the idea of just going head-to-head with someone else and seeing what we're both capable of."

........"The Fragile is somewhat more optimistic and a whole lot less linear. The album also finds Reznor indulging a range of musical tangents, including a marching band (albeit synthesized) on "Pilgrimage" that harks back to Fleetwood Mac's Tusk."

The article will be online sometime today or tomorrow...

Thanks a lot to: kraw and crystal.

Thanks to: Kenneth.

On page 6 of the December issue of Alternative Press Magazine there is a fan letter written about Trent Reznor from our own SLS news contributors:
A WARM PLACE

My heartfelt thanks for the in-depth interview with Trent Reznor (A.P. 134). After patiently waiting for the past five years, it is nice to see his return, and many thanks for the explanation about his battle with depression. Had his fans known what he was going through personally, perhaps there would have been less pressure on him to make his next album. Five years has been a long wait to his many dedicated fans. I am very happy that he (in his interviewed words) decided to "shit and get off the pot." Welcome back, NIN. Finally!!
...........Joann Hutton, Philadelphia, PA

Thanks a lot to: crystal.

Marc Romanek Book

Angelle, an SLS viewer, was flipping through an issue of Jane magazine the other day, which she noticed a small paragraph on a new book out by Marc Romanek, the director of "Closer," and "The Perfect Drug." The book is called "Music Video Stills" and the article mentioned that he has done videos for Nine Inch Nails, Madonna, Lenny Kravitz and Beck. We should imagine that the book will sport stills from Nine Inch Nails in this upcoming release, though we can't be sure. They didn't mention a release date and amazon.com shows no sign of this title. More information as it becomes available.

Thanks a lot to: Angelle.

David Carson Speaks, Mentions Nine Inch Nails & Upcoming Book Release Party

On Amazon.com, there is the ability to write a comment if you are the author of the book. David Carson left his thoughts on October 25th about his latest book, 'Fotografiks' which he greatly thanks Trent Reznor.

Most of these pictures were inspired by people and events around me. I'd especially like to thank Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails for influencing some aspects of this book and for letting me partake in the photography for his new album. I think most of these photos are multifaceted and need to be looked at in more than one way. This is not a coffee table book. I didn't intend it to be and I don't want anyone to misinterpret this work. Thanks for the support. I hope you enjoy the book.
The guys over at The NIN Hotline have discovered that David Carson will be holding a book release party at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City on November 4th. Below is a blurb taken from the official site:
Fotografiks: David Carson
Thursday, November 4, 1999, 6-8pm
David Carson will lecture about his new book, Fotografiks, an exploration of his experimental photography published by Ginko Press. Carson's first book, The End of Print, is a best seller among graphic design publications.
I have currently ordered a copy of "Fotografiks," Carson's new book, which was released on October 21st and I hope to post a review next week or so... Can't wait........!!

Thanks a lot to: John.

NIN Special on Australian Radio

The Australian radio station Triple J announced last week that they would be airing the 3 hour Nine Inch Nails special tonight at 10pm on J Files, which we have been talking about all last week. Unfortunately the show is now over, but John Raptis, the Australian Happiness In Slavery Webmaster who was involved in the interview, wrote us to explain some details about went on. "I just finished my bit on triple J. The show is still on. Goes for 3 hours! All on NIN it was a great buzz and heaps of fun with killer rare tracks that I provided!" Raptis added, "I will have a real audio version up on the weekend..." We'll get you all the address to listen once he has it online.

The Australian SLS viewers, who tuned in just in time to listen, wrote us with some extra details about the show. The songs that were aired were from all the albums with a few remixes chucked in. The main rarities that they played were "Supernaut," Live version of "Happiness In Slavery" at Woodstock '94, Live "Suck" (Wax Trax), Live video version of "March of The Pigs" and "I'm Afraid of Americans." The main songs that caught a viewer's attention was "10 Miles High," which can be found on the vinyl version of the Fragile and the upcoming import single to "We're In This Together." Triple J also aired the original version of "Physical" by Adam Ant to show the contrast between the NIN version. The interviews consisted of recent American radio interviews such as WFNX and a collection of previous interviews from around the worldrecorded in previous years about the different releases.

Thanks a lot to: Sharee, kell and Silence.

Amenpill Demo Online

Front man Sebastien Monney of Amenpill, who was a former member of Prick years back, informed us that their first single "Invisible" is now available in MP3 format at their official website. Among the first single are 2 working MP3 demos called "Swallow The Seeds," and "Leeches," which are just as loud and emotional as their first official single. Amenpill are still taking orders, but are running out fast, of promotional singles of "Invisible" (nearly 100 copies were shipped) among other free goodies.

For those who are going to be in New York City on November 1st, quickly swing by MalFunction (Located at the Pyramid) to pick up a free CD copy of "Invisible." Unfortunately I don't know the time, but their official website should have a time some time soon.

Sebastien also added, "We are now back in the recording sessions to complete our demo, which should be ready for the beginnig of the year." He will be keeping us informed on all their latstest...

Gavin Rossdale References Trent Reznor

Also in the December issue of Alternative Press on page 68 is a quote from Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale about Trent Reznor:

"I'm motivated by revenge, but I'm obsessed with good stuff as well," Rossdale explains. "Love and togetherness are so important to me, and loyalty is an obsession with me. A lot of the that I write about is how I feel that I've been let down. I've never moaned about coming from a broken home, and I think people probably make too much of that, but there's sort of that of that element of that killer line, the best line Trent [Reznor] ever wrote 'Everyone I loved goes away in the end,' followed closely by 'My empire of dirt.' Now that's deep."

Thanks a lot to: Diseased Angel.

Seeming as though Manson's "Dead to the World" video is unavailable to my knowledge over here, I think UK Manson fans will probably have to order from overseas to get their hands on it." We'll have more information about the UK release of "God Is In The TV" soon.

Manson Comments On Starfuckers Inc.

The December issue of Alternative Press on page 13 features a statement Manson made about Starfuckers Inc.

The media have been reporting that "Starfuckers Inc.," the hard-rock track on Nine Inch Nails' new album, The Fragile, is a swipe at Marilyn Manson's rise to fame. When asked about the track, Manson was nonplused. "I've heard from Trent's people--not Trent [Reznor] personally--that the song is not directed at me and I should not be insulted," says Manson. "If it is intended for me, I'm quite flattered that someone would acknowledge that I am a star, and that I do find pleasure in fucking a star. I don't take [the song] too seriously. Its most redeeming quality is that it was the only song I was able to remember after listened to the album."

Cover Art to Manson's "The Last Tour On Earth" Live Album

The image on the right is the flaming cross Manson used to rise on and burn when he was on tour earlier this year, which is also the cover art to their live album "The Last Tour On Earth." The image is a scan of the album poster which was spliced together to form what you see. It is a little choppy in some areas, but you get the idea. More information on this live album next week and don't forget it comes out on November 16th!

Thanks a lot to: kraw.

Every year, the week before Halloween, The Box (music video channel we talked about last week) shows old creepy/"halloweeny" videos. In years past they've had "Down In It," "Sweet Dreams," "The Beautiful People,""I'm Afraid of Americans," and others. This year, they have videos from Squarepusher (Come On My Selector,) 12 Rounds (Pleasant Smell,) and Marilyn Manson (APOTET, although that's not a Halloween selection. They just have it available). It's just too bad these videos are only available for two weeks; as they are the best the Box has to offer I'm told.

Thanks to: Tim.

Sweet Dreams Director Holds Art Show

Dean Karr, the director of Marilyn Manson's Sweet Dreams video held an art show to show off his photography this past Saturday night in Los Angeles. An SLS viewer wrote in this morning who attended the event to explain, "a lot of his pictures were amazing" and that he had a photo of Marilyn Manson and one of Twiggy. The photo of Twiggy was him lying down exposing his genital, imagine that! He also had a shot from Method Man's photo session for his 2nd solo CD among many other great photos.

The Fragile On TV Shows Work

An SLS viewer couldn't but notice yesterday while he was watching figure skating on Fox. A profile was given on the World Champion, Russian figure skater Maria Butyrskaya that used a 20 second clip of "Even Deeper" which is track 8 on the left Fragile disc. That's not all... NBC played NIN's "Complication" off The Fragile during a portion of its extreme games special called "Gravity Games."

Thanks a lot to: Danny, KEN.

David Carson, the Fragile artwork genius, released FOTOGRAFIKS on Tuesday, October 21st with over 190 pages of stunning artwork used on The Fragile. Carson is said to be a controversial photographer, known for his extreme close-up shots of common objects and all around abstract images. Each photograph that was used in The Fragile comes with brief explanations in his new book.

RhiGgATWaT, an SLS viewer, who discovered Carson's new books, wrote us this morning to explain

Towards the back of the book is the exact picture from the cover of the fragile along with two similar ones. It is an extreme close-up of a seashell (maybe deeper inside the downward spiral which also had a shell theme?). There is also a two page spread of the out of focus flowers on the back cover of the fragile. The odd thing is that for the fragile picture, they cut off the top of the picture and put it on the bottom of the back cover. Look at it and you can see how it should fit together. Both the CDs and front cover of the booklet were taken from this flower picture. Also in Carson's book are the pictures from inside NIN's booklet such as the picture from the ripe with decay page, which fades into green. Also, in the middle of the book is the design for www.nin.com with the various sized boxes. The ISBN # for the book is 1584230045, it's a very interesting book to look at while listening to The Fragile.

Thanks a lot to: RhiGgATWaT.

NIN On MTV Europe News

Barry, an SLS viewer, informed us today at the end of this weeks news edition of MTV Europe yesterday. The VJ mentioned that next week Nine Inch Nails would be one of their main topics. I'm assuming MTV will be talking about NIN's upcoming tour that kicks off in two weeks on November 14th.

Thanks a lot to: Barry.

Audio Testing At The Official Clint Mansell Website

The official website is about to start testing in-built audio on the Clint At The Controls website this week - aside from the real media streaming audio/video that you will already have seen, they will also be providing exclusive audio tracks and atmospheric loops within the site.

Shortly, a number of short loops will be going up at the site for testing. They have decided to use flash to stream the audio mp3s, so you will need the flash plug-in, if you haven't got it already.

For information, the loops are called Bug Drone, Deep South and Tout La Mal, Mon Ami.

Depending on your system, the loops may sound a little scratchy, but should be fine in the main.

Should the tests be successful, they are planning to introduce longer pieces to enhance the Clint At The Controls experience.

The talented Australian webmaster to Happines In Slavery, John Raptis, who has been a long time friend to SeemsLikeSalvation will also be interviewed on the forthcoming J-Files NIN special on Triple J in Australia which we mentioned on yesterdays headline, "Triple J Radio Station Hoping For Trent Interview." More details will be available as soon as its all finalized. John is currently working with Triple J to get this special happening so keep it here for the latest and speaking of Australia... We plan to have an online collaboration with BigDayOut.com when NIN tours the festival in January 2000. This should be interesting...

Munich Concert Coliseum Sold Out

Bobby, an SLS Viewer, wrote us to say the NIN concert on November 19th at the Munich Coliseum is officially sold out! He managed to get the last 5 tickets yesterday, which the ticket box informed him on the phone he got the last of them.

Thanks a lot to: Bobby.

Triple J Radio Station Hoping For Trent Interview

Last night from 10pm-1am DJ Richard Kingsmill, on the Triple J radio show J Files, explained the tentative J-File subject for next week is NIN "everyone here has their fingers crossed", but that he is waiting/hoping for Trent "to return his phone call" (presumably for interviews etc) so that it can go ahead. More info on the show can be found on their website, though there isn't anything related to a NIN special just yet. If it does indeed go ahead, those not in Australia can listen via the web.

Thanks a lot to: Antonetta.

Australian Rollingstone Issue Review The Fragile

The November issue of Rollingstone on page 96-97 features a review by Jeff Apter. Facing page has a full-page photo of Trent in a car, hands on the steering wheel with the caption, "Keep your hands where I can see 'em: The king of rock and roll psychodrama, Trent Reznor, takes the wheel."

Trent Warfare - Trent Reznor digs deep in the existential dirt for this hard-rock opus, The Fragile.

As of this moment, you can forget Courtney Love and her mouthy hyperbole, or Marilyn Manson's hate-your-parents freakshow. Trent Reznor has returned to remind us just who is 1990's most intriguing artist. And unlike the other pair of reprobates, Reznor has - in the main - let his music do the talking. But with the exception of his Lost Highway soundtrack diversion - oh, and the year he spent imprisoned in the studio manning the controls for Manson's Antichrist Superstar - all's been quiet on the Reznow front for a good five years. Yep, half a decade has slid by since The Downward Spiral pinned back several million pairs of ears in 1994 - and Reznor celebrated by dancing a madman's waltz in the Woodstock mud. Not surprisingly, a lot of history has gone into the blockbuster production that is The Fragile. Reznor has had to deal with the runaway success of Nine Inch Nails (a band who exist pretty much in name only), the death of his dearly beloved grandmother, and the unavoidable commercial and artistic pressures that accompany a platinum-plus hit such as The Downward Spiral. Taking all these personal and professional Achilles heels into consideration - and then milking them fot the choice subject matter they so clearly provide - Reznor's emerged with a pretty damned spectacular piece of work. The Fragile is a 23-track, 100 minute-long opus of anguish, loaded with imagination, dexterity and enough nasty sonic thrills to leave you gasping.

Contrary as ever, Reznor hasn't exactly packed The Fragile with singles in waiting. Sure, there's one track that screams out for airplay, with its warp-speed riffage, anthemic chorus and inspired steal from Carly Simon's "You're So Vain": that would be "Starfuckers, Inc", which DJ's are going to love back-announcing. No, rather than cranking out the alt-rock hits, Reznor - rock & roll's very own Richard Wagner - has approached this sprawling, engrossing epic as one massive piece of music, a post-grunge symphony. Vocal tracks are interspersed with such instrumental moodpieces as the metallic crunch of "Pilgrimage" and at the other end of the scale, "Ripe", which is all low-key electro-blues acoustics. There's even a hint of David Sylvian exotia during "Into the Void", that is until Reznor's trademark - that throbbing, relentless industrial-rock pulse and tsunami-sized guitars - kicks in and drags the track elsewhere.

Still every analyst's dream patient, Reznor's headspace was, clearly as fucked-up as ever while making The Fragile. Look no further than such tracks as "The Day the World Went Away", "The Wretched", "The Great Below", "The Way Out Is Through" and "I'm Looking Forward to Joining You Finally" - or the album's startling opener "Somewhat Damaged", with its "too fucked up to care anymore" chant - they're all none-too-subtle dredges through Reznor's tormented psyche. He's somehow managed to reduce Billy Corgan's worst nightmares to mere walks in the existential park. But what he does share share with the head head Pumpkin is a large scale vision, an uncanny knack to mould great rock & roll art out of the kind of inner turmoil that'd keep even Stephen King up at night. While he could still use an editor, sometimes desperately - and therapy's gotta be cheaper - Trent Reznor continues to shock and startle with the dark beauty of The Fragile. 4 Stars (of 5).

Best Tracks: "Starfuckers, Inc", "The Day the World Went Away", "Somewhat Damaged"
File Under: Psychodrama Rock - Smashing Pumpkins "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness", Nine Inch Nails "The Downward Spiral", Depeche Mode "Violator".

Thanks a lot to: Antonetta.

Church NIN Envelope

I laughed when I saw this and I thought others would have a laugh or two as well. Sean, an SLS viewer explained, "I received this envelope in my mailbox today and it instantly caught my eye. It's from a church asking for donations. Sort of ironic, don't you think?" It certainly is... Click the scan on the right for a larger scan of the envelope. I'm sure they would have had legal issues if the reversed the second "N".

Thanks a lot to: SEAN.

Big Honor for NIN from Vibe Magazine:

In the upcoming December/January double issue of Vibe magazine. A very comprehensive list (in no order) of the 100 essential albums of the 20th century will appear. That's the essential albums of the last 100 years, folks.

The Downward Spiral was selected as one of only 2 "rock" records of the 90's. The other being Nirvana's Nevermind.

By being on this list, Trent is in the company of such artists as Miles Davis, David Bowie, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Black Sabbath, Public Enemy, Ramones, Billie Holiday, Prince, Bjork, John Coltrane, BB King, Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchel, Chuck Berry, Duke Ellington and Van Morrison. Here is the short piece on the album:

The Downward Spiral, Nine Inch Nails
Nineties studio technology was waiting years for someone skilled, musical and miserable enough to use it for a grand personal statement. Then Trent Reznor holed up and vented-hard-into his computer. Brought black clothes and digital noise to the mall.

Thanks a lot to: NINXPX.

NIN Paris Concert Flyer

Memorabilia, an SLS viewer, wrote us today to explain while she was at a Chemical Brothers's gig last night at the "Le Z*nith" arena, which NIN will play on November 25th. She was given a Nine Inch Nails flyer that can be seen on the right.

Thanks a lot to: Memorabilia.

New Fragile Ad in Wired Magazine

The Nine Inch Nails advertisement on the right comes from the November '99 issue of Wired Magazine. The image on the right takes up a half a page on page 240. It shows the NIN logo on the left corner, and "The Fragile" in the upper right corner.

Random Nothing News

Yesterday, during the show "Conexion" on MTV Latin America, they played the Nine Inch Nails' "Down on It" video. Also, about three weeks ago they had a special with a mexican band called "Molotov". They showed the videos that, to them, were the most important of the nineties. "Closer" was number 4, just behind Pearl Jam's "Jeremy"(3), Metallica's "Enter Sandman"(2), and Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in the top spot. Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People" also made the list, but Ricardo can't remember the exact position.

Thanks a lot to: Ricardo.

Search For Female Singer To Not Sing On Nine Inch Nails Tour

Apparently the female singer Nine Inch Nails is in search for is not to sing backups on the upcoming world tour. Trent Reznor wrote on his official discussion board under the red room explaining it's for another project:

Someone has started a rumor that the female vocalist position is for singing backups on the tour. It is not. I am starting a new project that will involve someone else singing, probably involved lyrically and most likely female. This is not in place of NIN, I just have a lot of extra material and ideas that I'm excited to try in a different situation. More later...

Currently No NIN New Years Eve Show

Trent Reznor wrote in the red room to explain that there is currently no New Years eve performance.

As of right now there is NO show anywhere on new years eve, nor has there ever been one. If there ever IS one, you have my word that it would not be with Bush (as I have heard).

Wal-Mart to Sell Celebrity Death Match Soundtrack

For the first time in Marilyn Manson's history, Wal-Mart will be stocking a CD in which he is prominently featured. Wal-Mart agreeing to carry the Celebrity Death Match soundtrack comes as a surprise considering the "kill your god" lyrics in the lead single from Manson. Perhaps Manson has lost some of his ability to outrage now that he is made of clay.

Small Astonishing Panorama Of The Endtimes Video Details

Marilyn Manson's Astonishing Panorama Of The Endtimes claymation video debuted on October 18th after all, just not on MTV that is... Two SLS viewers wrote us yesterday evening to explain the video debuted on the new music video network called The Box. The Box Music Network is the only 24/7 interactive all-music basic cable channel that gives you what you want, music videos and the ability to control them. By calling The Box you can determine the music you and your entire town gets to see! The Box Online is the on-air channel offering that gives you the ability to see your local play list, look up artist information, see video previews and find out the latest music news. The Box Online also gives you the unprecedented ability to order a video over the Internet and have it played on your television. So what does this all mean? It's a step up from MTV, our normal run of the town music station that revolutionized music into spin-offs like The Box and MuchMusic. Anyhow the new Marilyn Manson video features deranged siamese twin monkeys being chased by a mechanical spider with a television set for it's head during a Marilyn Manson concert show! The video will debut tomorrow on MTV's Total Request Live.

You can already see the new Marilyn Manson video "Astonishing Panorama Of The Endtimes" in the US on The Box music network. You can call in to request it or at their website www.thebox.com.

Thanks a lot to: GaSkiLL, weasel.

Former NIN Engineer Producers Messy

The official website for Love & Rockets, posted a note from drummer Kevin Haskins which follows:

Since the demise of Love and Rockets I have not been resting on my laurels, oh no! I have formed an electronic dance and soundscape entity known as MESSY. My partner in crime is Doug Deangelis, who you may know as co-producer and programmer for the last Love and Rockets CD, Lift. Doug has an impressive background, having programmed, produced and/or engineered such diverse artists as Nine Inch Nails, PM Dawn, Pyschotica, Tom Tom Club, New Order, Janet Jackson and Nenah Cherry. Our first piece of work entitled SHOCK has just been licensed to Playstation's Jet Moto 4 game, and this track will be available on the soundtrack CD for the game. Aside from MESSY, I have continued to work on remixes for Berlin's "Like Flames", The Doors "LA Woman", and Bob Marley's "Kaya". These will all be available on Cleopatra Records.

Info On Ordering WITT Single & Past NIN Singles Deleted

The Weathermen Records wrote us yesterday to explain the confusion behind the We're In This Together single release. The Weathermen explained the original double CD for the WITT single was cancelled which then the triple pack came on file. Anyone who ordered the single from them will receive the full three parts unless they again are told otherwise.

With Nothing Interscope releases tend to change all the time, we saw this happen with a lot of the Marilyn Manson Cd singles, we saw this with the NIN CLOSURE video 3 days before the release. While we wish we knew everything about the releases things tend to change at the last moment.

In related news, we have now confirmed with the Southwest office of Universal Music that the following NINE INCH NAILS cd's have been deleted from further production:

MARCH OF THE PIGS U.S. SINGLE
FURTHER DOWN THE SPIRAL U.S. SINGLE
THE PERFECT DRUG IMPORT SINGLE.

"We have not confirmed but it is believed that PERFECT DRUG u.s. has also been deleted," says Weathermen Records.

You will probably see these in your local cd store for a while maybe even in excess. What this means is that if your record store tries to reorder after they sell out they will not be able to.

The Weathermen currently carries March of the Pigs and Further down in stock at this time but do not have anymore of the Perfect Drugs.

Russian MTV Vote On WITT & Coma White Videos

An SLS viewer from Russia wrote us yesterday to say that Russian MTV has a it's own "12 angry viewers" show and last weekend they watched and voted on "We're In This Together" by Nine Inch Nails along with 5 other videos. When the voting took place, NIN received 7 thumbs up, 3 thumbs down and 2 people didn't vote. It was the highest vote after Aphex Twin's "Windowlicker" which received all but one thumbs up.

Three weeks ago Marilyn Manson's "Coma White" premiered on the show and it received the highest votes, having been picked out the best video of the show.

Marilyn Manson's "Coma White" premiered in Russia a week after its official premiere in the US. Russian MTV was the first in Europe to show the video.

Thanks a lot to: ZZZombiE.

WITT Rising on Charts

According to Billboard's Modern Rock Charts, "We're In This Together" by Nine Inch Nails has had an increase of 3 positions from #14 to #11 ahead of such singles as both of Limp Bizkit's current songs: "Re-Arranged" and "Nookie", Rage Against the Machine's "Guerilla Radio", and Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Around the World".

The current #1 postion is held by Bush's "The Chemicals Between Us" with Creed's "Higher" at #2, and Live's "Dolphin's Cry" at #3.

We're In This Together Single Track Listing

Weathermen Records informed us last week that the "We're In This Together" single was canceled, but we were informed today that their information was incorrect. We have confirmed that the official track listing below is for the upcoming November 15th release to the 3 CD import single "We're This Together." This track listing is for the Germany single thanks to Brainstorm Music Marketing.

"We're In This Together" to be released on November 15th:

CAT. - NO.: 497 140 -2
1. We're In This Together (radio edit)
2. The Day The World Went Away (quiet version)
3. The Day The World Went Away (porter rick mix)

CAT.-NO.: 497 142 -2
1. We're In This Together (album version)

3. The New Flesh

CAT.-NO.: 497 183 -2
1. We're In This Together (album version)
2. The Perfect Drug
3. Complication

The reason the Quite Version and the Porter Ricks remix to The Day The World Went Away is included on the "We're In This Together" single because it was never released overseas.

NIN Video Debuts

Last week the video to "We're In This Together" made its debut on VH1. The VJ just gave a little info on The Fragile and told people to go out and buy the albulm. The video will also made its debut on Dutch television for the first time tonight on a rock program called "Wet & Wild."

Thanks to: prb, Susan.

9 Days That Rocked The Nineties

On Sunday, MTV ran a program called "9 days that rocked the niteties." Nearly 10 minutes into the show they had a segment on soundtracks and how they had literally exploded in the nineties. They featured a short clip (maybe 30 to 45 seconds) of Trent (being the producer of Lost Highway and Natural Born Killers soudtracks) mentioning that he felt that promoting the main songs on the soundtracks sort of cheapens the film. This was said as an opposing thought to puff daddy saying that soundtracks help to sell and popularize the films.

The next segment - on music sampling - showed a clip of bowie and trent on the set of I'm Afraid Of Americans with David Bowie responding to the old news about Vanilla Ice sampling from his and Queen's song "Under Pressure."

Lollapalooza and Woodstock - This section showed clips of the first Lollapalooza tour with a very short clip of nin on stage. they also played clips from "Head Like A Hole" during this segment.

The next segment on explicit lyrics had a large section devoted to manson and his antics. "...the things i do are inteded to piss people off..." - Manson clips from live shows and protestors were shown and a larger portion of a Manson interview with him from anti-christ era.

Thanks to: Hellbent.

The October 25th issue of people ("Is there a Sixth Sense" cover featuring Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment) contains a review of The Fragile in the picks and pans on page 48. It features a photo of Trent with a mix with the caption: "Nine Inch Nails leader Trent Reznor's latest dark opus is not for fragile ears."

"Returning from a five-year absence, Nine Inch Nails auteur Trent Reznor discovers a sunny pop landscape beyond the once angry seas of the alternative rock he helped mold. As fans know, the anti-pop maestro is a Backstreet boy of a different stripe, and on this much anticipated new double CD, he dwells where the sun rarely shines. With more than 100 minutes of uneasy listening packed into these 23 tracks, Reznor maps an aural universe that is positively hellish -dense with static and all the manner of dissonant and chaotic electronic noise. But Reznor, who sings numbers like "Somewhat Damaged" and "The Wretched" in a voice pinched by anguish, finds freedom from torment in the complex, propulsive polyrhythms, ringing piano chords and wisps of melody that burst like divine light onto the dark sonic mix. -S.D.

Bottom Line: Melody Fights for life in a foreboding but brilliantly rendered musical underworld.

Thanks a lot to: Hawke, Danny.

The Buffalo, NY based radio station 103.3 The Edge is holding a ticket contest for Nine Inch Nails all weekend long. Thanks to: Brett.

Nine Inch Nails Rehearsals

Thomas, an SLS viewer, wrote us this evening to say he recognized where the pictures taken of Leo off the official NIN website were taken at. For those who don't know Leo has been a nin engineer since the Broken album. The very distinctive walls of the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans have concluded that this must be where NIN is holding the rehearsals with stage and lights. I'm told this is a fairly large venue in New Orleans and holds around 3,000-6,000 seats. The theatre is located right downtown in New Orleans on Canal St, very near the superdome and French Quarter, maybe about 15-20 minutes from Nothing Studios and Trent's garden district home (especially if they take Tchouptilouas to get there). This is also where Thomas's high school graduation was held.

Thanks a lot to: stephen hero.

WHFS Interview Online

The Washington/Baltimore based radio station WHFS 99.1 FM has uploaded the Trent Reznor interview that took place on on October 4th hosted by Jonny Riggs in streaming real audio format.

No WITT Single

Our friends over at Weathermen Records have informed us that the overseas "We're In This Together" single has been officially cancelled. I hope to have an explanation why this happened in the next few days. We were told this might happen since it was past due and the track listing would have been out way before now. Unfortunately, some things just don't work out.

Send Your Demo Material To Nothing Records & Female Vocalist Call for NIN

Good news to all those NIN/Nothing Records fans that speed by Trent Reznor's Garden District Mansion throwing their demo tapes at his front door hoping he might take a quick listen. You now can do it without hurting people because the official Nine Inch Nails website is asking you, if you're interested, to submit your demo tapes too: PO BOX 161095 Cleveland, OH 44116.

If you are also interested in submitting material for the female vocalist position Trent has mentioned in the press recently, send your work to: PO BOX 16948 Cleveland, OH 44116

All of your work should contain photos and contact information. All other mail can be sent to: P.O. Box 16681 Cleveland, OH 44116. The site also says that material received that is inappropriate for the specific P.O Box will be discarded.

Thanks a lot to: Adam Padron.

The Fragile Is The Most Successful Selling NIN Release To Date

Even though The Fragile is slowly falling off the Billboard 200 each week, there is a bright side to all of this besides the fact the biggest drop in the history of Billboard 200 was when NIN fell from No. 1 to No. 16 last week. A viewer did a quick online search to see how The Fragile sales compare with past NIN releases, referencing such sites as the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) which distributes Gold and Platinum awards. The Downward Spiral was released on March 4th, 1994 which debuted at No. 2 and was certified GOLD (500,000 copies sold) on April 21, 1994. A little math will tell you that TDS took 7 weeks to sell 500,000 copies. At this time in 1994, TDS held a position #34 behind such acts as Slayer, Ace of Base, Counting Crows, Candlebox and the Lion King soundtrack. REM's Monster held the #1 position. Currently The Fragile, based on Billboard reports, has sold over 419,000 copies in 3 weeks besting any NIN release to date on its first few opening weeks. If this keeps up, The Fragile will be certified gold next week or the following. Now that is a record to be proud about!! For those who may or may know, Billboard doubles the sales figures for double albums. So when Billboard reports that The Fragile has sold 419,000 copies, technically only about 209,500 copies of the album have been purchased in three weeks. So, when Billboard reports that the Fragile goes "Platinum" only about 500,000 copies will have been sold. However, by the standards Billboard has set, purchasing one double album is equal to 2 copies. So by their standard, the Fragile has sold 419,000 copies anyway.

Thanks a lot to: NINXPX for your help.

KROQ NIN Contest Winner

The Los Angeles based radio station KROQ 106.7 FM has picked their winner(s) to see NIN's first 10 performances in Europe. Congratulations Elizabeth Zarate!

According to the Washington/Baltimore area radio station, WHFS 99.1, will be uploading the Trent Reznor interview hosted by Jonny Riggs, which aired on October 4th to their official website very soon.

Trent Reznor Submits Tracks For Quake III

A source from inside ID Software, home of our famous first-person shoot 'em up games such as "Doom, Quake and Hexen" informed SeemsLikeSalvation News yesterday that Trent Reznor has submitted 2-3 tracks for "Quake III: Arena." The SLS viewer, who asked to remain nameless, was told this when a fellow co-worker from the software company asked why Nine Inch Nails thanks them in The Fragile booklet. Unfortunately it was announced today that NIN will not be featured on the soundtrack for the video game. Todd Hollenshead, the CEO of ID Software explained:

To put this rumor quickly to rest, we don't have any tracks from Nine Inch Nails in the current Q3A soundtrack. Trent spent most of his time this year completing his latest album (you can still call them that, right?), and is now preparing for touring, if he's not already doing it.

As far as what is really in the soundtrack, I'm going to wait until it's finalized to go into details, but we have some great music from names many people will recognize."

Win Concert Tickets To See NIN In Germany

Radio station 'Edge102' is holding a contest and you could win tickets to the Nine Inch Nails perform in Germany! Here's the article from the official website:

NEW ROCK EDGE ADVENTURES

Here's the deal. We call up some of our favourite bands and ask whether they'll be playing anywhere decent in the near future. If they reply with somewhere like "Moose Factory" or "Kirkland Lake" we thank them for their time and hang up. (not that's there's anything particularly wrong with either of those places) If, however, it turns out that they're playing somewhere like Denmark or England or Los Angeles or Mexico, we order up a couple of tickets for the show and book a flight. That's a New Rock Edge Adventure. Listen for your chance to get on the standby list. Then listen to Humble and Fred Monday morning around 7:15. If they announce your name and you phone 'em back at 870-EDGE within 10 minutes and 21 seconds, you win! If you're not listening and you don't hear your name, you lose because all we asked you to do was this one simple thing and even then you wouldn't take the time. Sniff. THIS WEEK! - Nine Inch Nails in Germany.

Enter the contest here.

Thanks a lot to: zack.

The Chimp Channel: Marilyn Manson Skit

An SLS viewer wrote us to explain that last night while watching a quirky chimpanzee program called "The Chimp Channel" on TBS at 10:00pm EST. He couldn't help but notice the chimps were impersonating Marilyn Manson! The program features these fuzzy little chimps dressed in cloths talking amongst themselves like everyday people in short skits... but a skit on yesterday's episode featured a chimp with a white painted face dressed like none other than Marilyn Manson and was named after him even. They pretended that Manson was a guest on their chimp talk show, which he even sang lyrics from Manson's "The Dope Show." You'll be able to catch a rerun on Monday, October 18th at 12:05am. I'll put a video clip online ASAP if I get a chance to watch it.

Thanks a lot to: Rane80.

Random Nothing News

Local radio station in the DC/Baltimore region WHFS has had Nine Inch Nails' "We're In This Together" as the top song requested by callers for over a week now - even over Limp Bitzkit.

Thanks to: Jay.

Marilyn Manson's "Coma White" video aired for the first time on Italy's music channel TMC2.

Thanks to: Kirio Manson.

An SLS viewer was listening to his local radio station 98.5 KRXQ, in Sacramento, around 8:45 pm yesterdat and heard Marilyn Manson's new song "Astonishing Panorama of the End Times." He explains it's a totally awesome song. It has a lot of very fast guitar and highly distorted vocals. (please do not send me the live version in mp3 format. I already have it) Manson repeats in his lyrics that you should "kill your god, kill your TV." He also noticed the lyric "this is what you should fear, you are what you should fear" in the song is also from Kinderfeld.

Thanks to: James Alliston.

A viewer recently came accross a review of a movie about the life of Bob Flanagan. He's the character played in the Happiness in Slavery video. I'm sure you remember him... The review says the video is awesome... if you have the stomach to sit through it. You can check it out at here.

The Fragile Falls Further On The Billboard 200

Nine Inch Nails' The Fragile have been on the Billboard 200 for 3 weeks now. The Fragile debuted at No. 1 on its first week and then dropped to 16 on its second week. Unfortunately it now rests at 25 on its 3rd week with about 70,000 copies sold.

Halo 16: New Nine Inch Nails Single

SeemsLikeSalvation has been informed yet again from one of our reliable sources that the next Nine Inch Nails single will be "Into The Void." Unfortunately it is not confirmed with the people at Nothing Records for they tell me nothing has been picked, but was that said to throw me off the scent? It's been well over 2 months since we first announced "We're In This Together" as the second single. Currently I do not know a release date for Into The Void, but we should know more information about the single in the next few days...

Schwarzenegger Movie F/ Closer & David Lynch Mini Series Cancelled

Linda Bossa, an SLS viewer, wrote us to say, "A friend of mine saw a screening of the new Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, 'End of Days.' He said, Nine Inch Nails Closer is played during a scene where the devil defloures a little girl in front of her parents."

Also, the new David Lynch tv series Mulholland Drive has been cancelled by the suits at abc apparently. They thought that it was too strange and violent. (what did they expect from Lynch?) In a recent interview, Lynch said that he had a possible offer from Fox, but that to him, the project was dead. He then added that he felt bad for the actors who put their hearts and souls into the project. So much for the Marilyn Manson cameos...

Thanks a lot to: Linda Bossa.

Limited Edition Combo Package of Both "God is in the TV" Video and "Last Tour on Earth" CD

It's been confirmed that there will be a special edition package that contains both the upcoming Manson video and CD. Upcoming Skinny Puppy Singles/B-Sides CD Releases

On November 16th Nettwerk America will be releasing two new retrospective Skinny Puppy CD's. One CD will be a greatest hits so to speak while the other will compile a large chunk of deleted b-sides. Also on the same day Nettwerk will be re-releasing a remastered version of SP's final full length album with the label "Last Rights."

For those of you who dont know...The now defunct Skinny Puppy was a tremendously influential and pioneering electronic/industrial band throughout the 80's and early 90's. Both Reznor and Manson have cited the band as large influences; Trent once admitted that the early versions of "down in it" were intentionally very similar in structure to Skinny Puppy's "dig it". Additionally, Dave "Rave" Ogilvie, who's been working with Trent and Manson for several years now, came into prominence as a producer for skinny puppy.

Click the scan on the right for the track listing and other related news.

Trent Reznor In Time Magazine

In the October 18th issue of Time magazine features a short blurb about Trent Reznor in the letters section. The magazine also uses the same image they ran on Trent Reznor on September 27th.

"Rock star Trent Reznor, whose new album just reviewed [Music, Sept. 27], is no stranger to the pages of Time. We picked him as one of America's 25 most influential people in our April 21, 1997 cover story. We rote then, "Trent Reznor is...the lord of Industrial, an electronic-music form that...harks back to the dissonance of John Cage...[He] records as Nine Inch Nails, a one-man studio act, and has a thriving touring career as leader of Nine Inch Nails, a quartet that interprets his computerized compositions before wild fans...Reznor's music is filthy, brutish stuff, oozing with aberrant sex, suicidal melancholy and violent misanthropy. But to the depressed, his music, veering away from the heartless core of industrial, proffers pop's perpetual message of hope-or therapeutic Schandenfreude: there is worse pain in the world than yours...Reznor wields the muscular power of Industrial rock, not with frat-boy swagger, but a brooding, self-deprecating intelligence. 'I had no expectations of commercial success,' he says. 'But people "got it." That I didn't expect. '"

Thanks a lot to: Hawke.

Munich Ticket Scan

Brian, an SLS viewer, has submited a scan of his ticket to the Munich Colosseum arena to see NIN perform on November 19th. He also submited a scan to the '94 performance at the same arena.

Matt, another sls viewer, wrote to say that he will be going to the Brixton gig on December 1st and explained the ticket scan we were sent is nothing like the tickets he bought at a ticket window. The scan here is a ticket purchased from Ticketmaster, but the ticket Matt holds in his hands are twice as large as the normal TM tickets and are a gold color. They have Nine Inch Nails printed in huge black letters across the tickets, with gold foil SECURE seals printed across the perferated part. Radio 1 Trent Reznor Interview Details

The taped Trent Reznor interview on the UK radio station Radio1 aired last night with new tour details. Among the half hour long program, Radio1 aired three Fragile tracks which were "La Mer", "Into the Void" and "Even Deeper." Mary Anne Hobbs hosted this memorial event which Trent discussed the emotional processes behind The Fragile, his relationship with Marilyn Manson, and a possible tour schedule. After Nine Inch Nails finishes the eleven European dates and the five Big Day Out gigs they plan to hold a few dates in Japan, then tour America extensively, and finally kick it back over to England for a more extensive tour. For those who missed the interview, the official site may host it online soon.

Thanks a lot to Tom Cornille.

Japanese & German Chart Action

Commy, known for her Perfect Drug website, is back again to share the latest Fragile statistics on the Japanese charts.

Olicon Chart, the most famous general entertainment chart, reads this week (2 weeks) that The Fragile is currently at position 33 from 15 last week.

Broadcasting via satellite is the music program called "VIBE (ex MTV Japan)." The "We're In This Together" video aired number 13 (this is the first appearance) on the International Video Countdown from last week, and number 7 on this weeks. In a general (oversea and domestic) video countdown, WITT is currently at number 8 for this week.

Nine Inch Nails is October's "The Artist of the Month" on VIBE, but unfortunately they don't plan on running any programs. Commy even called to confirm with the station that this is a fact. Fortunately next week a short program for NIN will broadcast on another music channel which Commy will be writing back with more information soon.

The Fragile entered the German charts at position 17.

Thanks a lot to: Commy, and to goran.

96x News Eve NIN Concert Update

Sky, an SLS viewer, wrote us to explain the web address for the Norfolk Virginia based WROX 96X.1 FM radio station has no information about the Nine Inch Nails New Years Eve concert on their website, but is an avid listener to the station for they play Nine Inch Nails consistently.

Sky said the issue with the contest is, the radio station will pair tickets to a supposed show that they are going to give away which includes airfare, hotel, money and tickets to the Nine Inch Nails and the BUSH performances. I hope to have an official statment when WROX writes me back.

Check out the radio stations real audio broadcast here.

Thanks a lot to: sky.

PCXL Include NIN In Possible Link To Contribute Quake III Soundtrack

According to the article in PCXL magazine. They say Rage Against The Machine, Trent Reznor and DJ Sasha are all possible artists preparing to contribute soundtrack scores for the Quake III. In my opinion, it's highly unlikely that Trent Reznor would hold his current plans to record a soundtrack for a video game at this point.

Thanks a lot to: Adam Padron.

Misfits To Tour With Marilyn Manson

Metal Hammer Online features an article about how the Misfits plan to return to the UK in November in support of their new album, 'Famous Monsters'. Apparently, they are planning to team up with Marilyn Manson for a string of European festivals next year.

'I met Marilyn Manson last year and he is a very cool guy,' recalls Misfits bassist Jerry Only. 'We both played the Beautiful Monster Festival in Japan and they kept an amusement park open for us. So at nine o'clock at night we got to go on the rollercoaster with Manson and his band, and we had such a great time.

'They were freaking out that they were meeting us, and we were freaking out that we were hanging out with them, so it was really cool. We all said that we should tour together, so we agreed that we will do so in Europe in 2000.'

Thanks a lot to: sean 667.

Julien Donkey-Boy Poster

The scan on the right is a movie called "Julien Donkey-Boy." It is the follow up to "gummo", a favorite film of Marilyn Manson (he met Rose Mcgowen for the first time at its premiere). "Julien Donkey-Boy" was written and directed by Harmony Korine, who wrote the screenplay for "Kids" as well as writing and directing "Gummo", and will be released this Friday at a few art theatres in LA (next week nationally). David, an SLS viewer, wrote us to explain that 96x, a local radio station near him, announced they were holding a contest for a trip to New York City on New Years Eve, which includes 2 concert tickets to see Nine Inch Nails and Bush perform. The radio DJ told David, when he phoned them that day that the concert was legit and NIN would be there without a doubt. We'll have more details about this contest in the morning...

You may also recognize their work on the new Wipeout 3 release for PlayStation.

If there's a burning question that you've always wanted to ask, then feel free to send it through - obviously they can't guarantee a response every time, but if it's an interesting enough question, the webmasters will do their best to get it answered.

Warp Records Talks About Nothing Records

For the tenth anniversary of Warp Records, they answered 101 of the "best" questions, and one of them concerned Trent and Nothing Records.

QUESTION:
I was perusing a free copy of Spin magazine a week ago or so, and ran across a review of new Autechre and Squarepusher. I can't remember the exact words, but it started off with something along the lines of "love or hate Trent Reznor, you gotta give him credit for discovering bands like AE and Squarepusher and bringing them to the States." What do you think of a statement like that? It completely ignores Warp, the main muscle is getting this great music to the public...

ANSWER:
I think Nothing have given us lots of money and people are not stupid, I have never heard a Trent Reznor record.

Thanks a lot to: trezin.

Random Nothing News

Toronto radio station CFNY The Edge 102.1 FM aired a huge special on Nine Inch Nails last night. The broadcast included extremely rare audio clips of Trent Reznor before he was in Nine Inch Nails, while discussing his biggest triumphs during the hour-long program. It's a special the radio station does for bands of interest every week. This special runs every Sunday night which they advertise nights before... The same alternative-rock radio also listed their top 102 albums of 1999 so far. They played two tracks from each album. The Fragile came in the number 3 spot. Number 2 was the Red Hot Chili Peppers for Californication and number 1 went to Limp Bizkit for Significant Other (go figure).

Thanks a lot to: daredevil, Matthew.

NIN - The Lost Fragile Tracks UPDATE!!

The official Nine Inch Nails website features a new photo taken from Trent Reznor's personal burned copy of NIN material he never released. Trent Reznor told Cruz, WFNX DJ, that he is currently pondering how he's going to release it. So keep your fingers crossed for the future!

The words beneath the unreleased material are not readable, because the photographer or webmaster purposely blurred the image.

The other burned disc in the photograph reads, "Please Part 2" (a.k.a "appendage") taken from the cassette version off the Fragile and "New Flesh" taken from the triple vinyl version of the Fragile. The image shown is not Trent Reznor's hand writing by the way.

Keith Hillebrandt posted in the yellow NIN discussion room today and mentioned the "lost" Fragile tracks "aren't lost or forgotten. It should be the 'yet to be finished fragile tracks."

Among all the good nin news. Trent has returned to the states from a "grueling week of doing press in Europe to intense production rehearsals [and] preparing for the tour" he said in the red discussion room. Check out the official NIN discussion boards when you can because you might just run into the whole band chatting with the fans.

Thanks a lot to: Jordan, steve, jeremy.

NIN Fall 26 Positions On The UK Charts

According to dotmusic.com The Fragile has unfortunately plummeted in the uk charts from number 10 to number 36. This suggests that the surprisingly high entry of the record in the charts at 10 was never due to a high fan base, but at least a very committed fan base who all rushed out to buy the record on its release.

Thanks to: Jeremy.

The webmaster for the 013 website wrote in to say that the Nine Inch Nails gig at the 013 arena in Tilburg, Netherlands is officially sold out!

The Fragile Subway Posters

Matt, an SLS viewer, was on his way home yesterday evening and fortunately he was carrying his digital camera. While getting off the subway in Toronto, at the Younge and Dundas stop, he did a double take at this lovely large Nine Inch Nails advertisement for The Fragile. Interestingly enough he was also wearing his black embroidered Downward Spiral shirt. The man sitting on the bench beside the poster (who's ass you can see in the bottom right of the picture) looked at him with a raised eye-brow, Matt simply replied, "I'm a fan" and went on his way.

Thanks a lot to: matt.

Robin Finck, Danny Lohner & Charlie Clouser Contribute To 'End of Days' Soundtrack

The soundtrack to the forthcoming Arnold Schwarzenegger movie "End Of Days" will feature the first new Guns n' Roses song in eight years. Entitled 'Oh My God', Paul Huge, Gary Sunshine and Dave Navarro as well as our favorite live Nine Inch Nails guitarist Robin Finck contribute to this track. Finck's part was written by Paul and extensively manipulated by their producer Sean Beaven. Robin was not involved on the writing of the final recording though Axl Rose did participate in the arrangement. All lyrics were written by Axl himself. Additional programming (jack boots, screeching tires, etc.) was by Stuart White.

Included as well on the soundtrack is a version of Rob Zombie's "Superbeast," remixed by Nine Inch Nails keyboardist/drummer Charlie Clouser and a first time collaboration with Bluesy hip-hopper Everlast and Nine Inch Nails guitarist Danny Lohner for a track called, "So Long."

The pair recorded the track a year ago in New Orleans, according to Corey Wagner, a representative in Everlast's management office, explains Sonicnet News. Wagner, who said "So Long" has a "NIN vibe with an Everlast feel," said Everlast decided to contribute the track "after Geffen and [label president] Jordan Schur came to us with true passion to have it on the soundtrack." The song, initially titled "I Think I'm Gonna Die Today," recently was completed in Los Angeles.

For more information about the new GnR song, check out this website that Axl Rose supposedly wrote him self and uploaded the leaked mp3 track to "Oh My God," which hit the radio this weekend.

For more information about the other artists contributing to the soundtrack, please check out Sonicnet News for the full article. The soundtrack to 'End Of Days' hits the streets on November 9th, while the movie won't be released domestically 'till November 24th.

Alice Cooper Comments On Manson & NIN

Brian Schwetz, an SLS viewer, attended a Alice Cooper concert last night in Erie Pennsylvania. While he was there he found a local write-up about Cooper, which he comments on Marilyn Manson and Trent Reznor:

...Cooper always made it clear he mixes theater - not reality - with rock and roll. He's closer in spirit to horror-film masters like Sam Raimi, James Whale, and Vincent Price than, say, Marilyn Manson. Cooper doesn't buy the Manson persona.

"I love the idea that Marilyn Manson goes, 'I'm Marilyn Manson all the time,' and Alice Cooper is only Alice Cooper on stage. The guy goes shopping for his mother at Sears and Roebuck. How Marilyn Manson is that? If he's really Marilyn Manson, he should live in a mausoleum. I mean, come on. The guy sets himself up to be an absolute disappointment. As soon as the audience sees him any place normal, he's dead, as far as his image [goes]."

Cooper finds current bands like Marilyn Manson and Trent Reznor's Nine Inch Nails too black, too hopeless.

"I don't think anyone will ever do [industrial music] better than [Reznor]. It's just that style of music I don't quite understand. It's got such a heartless feel to it. It's very inhuman. It feeds on rage, and it feeds on despair. And that's fine. I don't mind it for two or three songs. Then I want to take it someplace else."...

The article was by Dave Richards, a staff writer for the Times Publishing Company in Erie.

Thanks a lot to: brian.

Flea, Chili Peppers Bassist, Loves The Fragile

The official Red Hot Chili Peppers website features a section in which Flea reports from the road. Here is what Flea had to say about The Fragile from Santiago, Chile on October 1st:

"I have been listening to the new Nine Inch Nails relentlessly it is the greatest fucking thing I have ever heard. Trent Reznor has such an original idea of rhythm and space and it just rocks my world. They will be playing with us on the Big Day Out tour in Australia and I am very excited about that."

Found Prick Bass Player Sebastien Monney

Sophie, an SLS viewer, attended a night club last Saturday night at "The Batcave" in New York, which she was handed a sticker for a band called "Amenpill", and on the side was a web address to their official site.

She finally checked the page out last night and to her surprise, Amenpill is a new band formed by Sebastien Monney, a former member of "Prick" in '98. Sebastien describes Amenpill as, "a dysfunctional relationship between heartfelt human emotions and the ruthless sound of digital distortion." In early 1999, 3 new musicians were recruited into Amenpill to complete the recordings and for upcoming shows later in the year. Amenpill is currently recording their first *demo* which can be found in their audio section. Sebastien Monney does all programming, guitars and keyboards.

KROQ Contest: Trip For Two To Every European NIN Gig

As we previously reported, the Los Angeles based radio station KROQ 106.7 FM broadcasted their hour long taped Trent Reznor interview, hosted by DJ Jed the Fish, yesterday evening from 5-6 PM (PST) via satellite at the Nothing Studios in New Orleans. During the hour long program, the station spun six NIN tracks such as "Head Like A Hole," "Into The Void," "Closer," "The Wretched," Down In It" and "La Mer." Keep a close eye on the official KROQ website for they will have the interview online later today.

Near the tail end of the interview, the alternative radio station announced they will be giving away a trip for two to see every European Nine Inch Nails performance with free air, train, hotel, concert tickets -- and spending cash. To win the 10 concerts in 10 cities in two weeks tour dream package, listen for KROQ to play Nine Inch Nails and be that lucky #20 caller by dialing 1-800-520-1067. You will then be entered in a drawing for this chance of a lifetime and those who qualify will win either a complete collection of all the NIN halos or a lithograph signed by Trent Reznor. Unfortunately, KROQ has yet to jump on the ban wagon by not offering a real audio stream like every other worldly known station does on the world wide web.

Thanks a lot to: The NIN Hotline.

Clint began work on his solo album on August 13th at the Nothing Records' studio facilities in New Orleans and has completed a total of 5 tracks with Keith Hillebrandt says the official \ website. The five track titles are currently "The Bug" which he now renamed "Atlantic Crossing", "Rocknroll Parts 1-3", "Pensacola 6am", "Flatliner" and an old track he wrote for PWEI called "Everything is Nothing Without You". Clint expects to have the album, currently without a working title, completed in early 2000.

Clint also explained that he contributed backing vocals to the Nine Inch Nails track, "Starfuckers, Inc."

Oh yeah, I did some backing vocals one night on a new Nine Inch Nails track ('Starfuckers Inc' which is on the new album) - although calling them backing vocals is a little misleading, as it's more like backing shouting!!

Nine Inch Nails Fall to No. 16 On The Bilboard 200

Nine Inch Nails, The Fragile took a dramatic fall from the top of the charts this week after selling 89,000 copies in its second week falling from No. 1 to No. 16. This is the first album to fall harder than any other #1 album this year. NIN sold about 140,000 fewer copies of The Fragile than the week before. Only if Trent sang lyrics like "I did it all for the nookie, come on, the nookie, come on, so you can take that cookie and stick it in yo, yeah!" he would get more sales.

Manson Featured On The Celebrity Deathmatch Soundtrack

The previously unreleased Marilyn Manson song, 'Astonishing Panorama Of The End Times' will make its official debut on the Celebrity Deathmatch soundtrack on Tuesday, November 2nd. The first video and single to the soundtrack will also be Manson's "Astonishing..." track. The song will be featured on the deathmatch season finally on Thursday, November 11th; Veteran's Day. The remainder of the tracks are still being finalized but the video for APOTET, which will be rendered in claymation, will debut on MTV's Total Request Live on Monday, October 18th.

Apparently Marilyn Manson and MTV must have talked things over the past 3 months because Manson did explain that MTV rejected it for it was too violent for the soundtrack. Below is a quote from Manson about the song rejection in the July 24th issue of Kerrang! Magazine which is found on the official Manson website.

"We played a new song in our set, 'Astonishing Panorama Of The End Times'. It was originally written for 'Antichrist Superstar' but we didn't use it on that album- it'll be on the next one. It was actually rejected by MTV because they requested a song to be used for 'Celebrity Deathmatch.' I wrote a song that was directly referring to these events that were happening in America and they thought it was too violent. I thought the fact that a show called 'Celebrity Deathmatch' would say that anything was too violent was very ironic. It made me laugh. It made me realize that I'm still living in the same world as I was 10 years ago when I started to write music."
There will be extensive 30-second commercial spots promoting the soundtrack on MTV throughout the months of November and December. The third season for the Celebrity Deathmatch kicks off on Super Bowl Sunday, January 21st 2000 with yet another special half time episode. There are to be 22 new bone-crushing episodes to begin airing on Thursday, February 4th.

The celebrity deathmatch soundtrack is a joint venture between MTV and Interscope Records. The executive producer and supervisor on the record is Karyn Rachtman of "Boogie bights," "Bulworth," "Mystery Men" and "Pulp fiction."

Thanks a lot to: kraw.

New Trent Reznor Photo

We mentioned on Monday, October 5th that the October '99 issue of i-D magazine features a new photograph of Trent Reznor along with a short interview. (read our "Small i-D magazine Trent Reznor Interview" headline for more info.) The photo was taken by Taryn Simon at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles. This hotel is also the same place Trent stayed when Dr. Dre was working on "Even Deeper." So these pics could quite possibly be a few months old. Taryn Simon (the photographer) is the girl Trent's groping in the picture...

Fred Durst Spits More Fire At Trent Reznor To His Fans

An SLS viewer, Chad Nelson wrote in this morning to explain last night he attended the Family Values concert in Grand Rapids Michigan which featured such bands as Staind, Crystal Method, Korn, Filter, and Limp Bizkit performing. About halfway through Limp Bizkits set Fred Durst walks around to the back of the pit on this mini stage type platform and says "This next songs is about Trent Reznor" and proceeds with the song Counterfeit. Which has the lyrics "You've even stolen your appearance from hanging around with my family, but I, never should have dropped my guard, so you could stab me in the back.....etc etc you're freaking me out you wear a mask called counterfeit."

Honestly, I didn't know it was in Durst's job description of a Vice President to make matters even worse? Expect more of this to continue....

Random Nothing News

There is a brief NIN mention in November's issue of VIBE magazine featuring comedian Chris Rock on the cover. You can find a small column the magazine does every month called "A/B Conversation;" it's two guys, A & B talking about a new song. In this issue they review "The Day the World Went Away," along with Mariah Carey's "Heartbreaker" and Foxy Brown's "Na Na Be Like." It's amusing, not too serious, more positive than the other reviews. The review can be found on page 188. Among the comments are "This sounds like Stone Roses," "This would work in a Listerine commercial," and "That was almost a song...What?! I liked it."

A rising LA-based hardcore/emo band called Stavesacre is starting to emerge as one of the most innovative rock bands in underground/indie circles. Mark Soloman, the lead singer, talks about the song writing and recording process, and briefly mentions Nine Inch Nails on their official website bio.
The inspiration to push themselves harder could not be more apparent on Speakeasy. The songs are sometimes bitterly direct or painfully honest. On top of that, Speakeasy is by far the most sonically pure album Stavesacre has recorded. Utilizing both Amp Farm and ProTools, this is the first Stavesacre album to be recorded entirely on digital equipment. Salomon remarks, "People won't believe this album was recorded digitally. It sounds so good that we are bringing some of the equipment on tour with us. The studio we recorded in has more equipment than Nine Inch Nails or the composers for the film Titanic had for their recordings."

NIN Big Day Out Tour Performance Description

The article snippet below comes from today's issue of Brisbane's The Courier Mail on page 7. It seems the paper has a quote from a Nine Inch Nails performance description for the Big Day Out festival.

Gold Coast festival the Big Day Out will follow up on last year's controversial Marilyn Manson appearance with the man responsible for the shock rocker's success. This year's line-up features hardcore band Nine Inch Nails starring lead singer and Manson producer Trent Reznor, expected to be a worthy successor with a stage show the critics dub "ferocious". "You know there are going to be moments when you'll have no idea what's going to happen next and you'll feel trapped and terrified," reads the description of the NIN performance. "You are going to be exhausted, disgusted, frustrated, scared and deeply, darkly angry."
Check out the official Big Day Out website for more information about this larger than ever festival including other acts such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers fresh with the hit album Californication. Among other attractions include psychedelic Primal Scream, electronic heavyweights Chemical Brothers and Blink 182.

Thanks a lot to: Scott.

Random Nothing News

Boston radio station WFNX wrote us to explain that they have uploaded the 30 minute interview with Trent Reznor in sreaming real audio here. I guess plans changed for the mp3 file?

Pollstar has updated their website with the official Nine Inch Nails tour dates.

Thanks to: Scott.

Trent Reznor is on the cover of the October 1st issue of "HITS," the music industry trade publication.

Thanks a lot to: Hellspawn.

John Frusciante, guitarist for 'The Red Hot Chili Peppers,' was on MTV's FANatic last night which said to the fan in response to his question, "What would you be doing if you were not with the Peppers." Frusciante's response was, "I would be with Nine Inch Nails."

Thanks a lot to: jon.

On the new Gas Giants album, entitled "From Beyond the Back Burner" which is slated for an October 12th release, has a track entitled "I Hope My Kids Like Marilyn Manson." A free download of the song is available here at CDnow.

The song is your basic cookie-cutter pop crap. The lead singer of the group is the former front man from Gin Blossoms. The song is basically saying the world is crap now and that he hopes his kids like Manson because the way the world is going, that's what they'll be listening to in the future.

Thanks to: omike015.

Japanese Chart Action

Commy over at The Perfect Drug website wrote us this morning to explain the latest news concerning the chart action in Japan for Nine Inch Nails.

The Japanese most famous and influential music (including videos, cinemas, TV programs) ranking news organization called "Olicon chart" ranks The Fragile at No. 15. It's the first appearance for The Fragile, which is a general ranking of Japan, so this chart included all the Japanese music too. Unfortunately the daily ranking for the week of October 3rd shows The Fragile disappeared from the top 20.

Also a ranking news of Japanese big radio network "FM Tokyo", The Fragile holds No. 5 in the overseas music ranking.

Thanks a lot to: Commy.

Small i-D magazine Trent Reznor Interview

There is a small bit on Trent Reznor in the October '99 issue of i-D magazine. Trent was featured in something they call the "elevator portfolio". It's supposed to be full of people on their way up. The elevator article just has eight questions answered by him and a photo of him (taken by Taryn Simon coming very soon) with a model in an elevator at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles.

i-D: What are you wearing?
Trent: Thrift store deluxe
i-D: What do you do?
Trent: Peel back the skin and show people what's underneath.
i-D: Career High?
Trent: Singing one of my songs with David Bowie.
i-D: What are you working on now?
Trent: Transforming The Fragile, the album into The Fragile, the live experience.
i-D: Influences?
Trent: Loneliness.
i-D: What makes life worth living?
Trent: Creating, playing, and experiencing music.
i-D: Ideal elevator music?

i-D: Who would you like to be stuck in an elevator with?

Fred Durst Mouths Off About Trent Reznor

Yesterday quite a few SLS viewers attended the Family Values concert at the Naussa Colliseum, and when Limp Bizkit got up on stage, half way through their act, front man Fred Durst and also Vice President of Interscope & A&R Records got everyone to start jumping to old school song 'Jump Around.' Then in a sarcastic manner Fred said, "Hey, I wonder if nine inch nails could get anyone to jump?" This comment may be in result to what Trent Reznor said about Fred Durst in the October 14th Rollingstone cover issue, now on stands, since Durst did say to K-Rock DJ, Raz, this evening that he was annoyed with the comment Trent Reznor said towards him and that he never did anything to him. Trent Reznor is quoted in the Rollingstone cover story, "I like the challenges of flirting with the mainstream. I think we can do it honestly. Let Fred Durst surf a piece of plywood up my ass."

The Star Review of The Fragile

This particular review is from the Saturday, October 2nd, 1999 issue of the Toronto Star. The article in the paper also features a new photograph of Trent Reznor leaning over a sink that is over-flowing with water [scan on right], and it looks as if it he just pulled his head out of the sink and his whole head is wet, hair and all.

Thanks a lot to: Morpheus8 and deity for the scan.

I'm told the November 11th gig at the Brixton Academy is officially sold out. It went on sale yesterday morning and a viewer tried to get a ticket from the box office at 11.00am and was told it had sold out. They explained to him the extra date was on sale and would probably sell out soon.

Thanks a lot to: Damien.

Bowie Discusses the Ziggy/Manson Glam Era

In the November issue of SPIN magazine is a Bowie interview which he chats about his age 52, his 20th album and a bit a more about Trent Reznor as well as Marilyn Manson.

Q: What do you think of this era's grand rock conceptualist, Marilyn Manson? His glam incarnation owed more than a slight debt to you. Except the breasts.

A: I don't mind him. But I do find him incredibly American in his approach to what I was doing. Very purist. What I did was far more open-ended. You could take on what Ziggy was about and completely make it your own. What Manson does is a strong statement, but a singular one and not very interesting. I would say Trent Reznor has more longevity. He'll be around for a very long time.

Thanks to: U5ELE55.

Bowie Comments On Trent and The Fragile

Addicted To Noise/SonicNet recently interviewed David Bowie which he comments a bit about Trent Reznor's personality and congratulates him on his new work at the end of the interview... while you're there check out some audio/video of his work in real audio format.

Addicted To Noise: In a recent interview, Trent Reznor was talking about the "I'm Afraid of Americans" video and how he was obsessed with "Taxi Driver" at the time. I was curious if you knew that and that his paranoia was driving him at the time.

Bowie: Oh yeah. I've always told him he looks like he has a DeNiro thing. And he's working on that quite broadly at the moment, isn't he? It's the new handsome Trent. He looks good [laughs].

Addicted To Noise: Have you heard the new [Nine Inch Nails] record?

Bowie: Yeah, I like it. I think he's really out there to become one of the most challenging artists. I think he's tremendous, absolutely tremendous. I suspect that he'll be around for a very, very long time, unlike some. He's not a temporary figure. He's a very sound, well-rounded, musical person. He's an accomplished musician. He's adventurous, he likes challenges and I think we'll see a lot of him for a long time to come.

Thanks a lot to: austin.

K-Rock Trent Reznor Transcript Soon

I'm told the half hour interview that aired on New York's 92.3 fm K-ROCK radio station should be transcribed later today and uploaded at the official site.

THanks a lot to: jared.

Richard Patrick Guest On NIN Side Project: Tapeworm

Sonicnet News features a new article on Filter leader Richard Patrick which he mentions that he is involved with Tapeworm.

Reports of strained relations between Patrick and Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor were misleading, the Filter leader said. "Trent and I are friends. And we will work together on a [side] project called Tapeworm," Patrick said.

Thanks a lot to: aadalman.

Quick FNX Update

FNX told me they will have the 30 minute mp3 of the interview online around 5pm. Expect a transcript most likely up around that time as well... Boston had the highest record sales for The Fragile by the way.
