More Wink News on Black Bomb
Here is an excerpt from the latest issue of Keyboard Magazine (October
'98). It's from an article that's mostly about the technical aspects of
Josh Winks new album "HereHear". It details the development of Black
Bomb in more detail then the Access Magazines Report...
Keyboard: You brought in some
interesting artists for this record: Ursula Rucker, Caroline Crawley, the
Interpreters, and Trent Reznor. Many Keyboard readers would be interested
in your collaboration with Trent.
Wink: That actually
happened through Jason Jordan, who does A&R for Columbia and Ovum. I sent
a couple of tapes out to people who I hoped to get vocals from. So I sent
Trent a tape, and I heard back that he was interested, and that he wanted
to do something with it. And that's how that came about. We talked
several times on the phone, I talked several times with his whole crew
down in New Orleans. It turned out really well. His writing really
complemented it. You heard the track; it's a weird track. I mean, you
wouldn't expect it to be what it is. It's eight minutes long, it's. . .
.The track had existed for a year already, but I just wanted to do
something different with it. When I first started working with it, I was
playing it out in the clubs on DAT, and someone heard it and said, "What
is it? It sounds like you , the Art of Noise, and Aphex Twin all put
together." I did a lot of sampling on it, like of my cat, some
distortion, and some household things. And so when trent came back into
the picture, we sent ADAT tapes back and forth, and kept on the phone
during the process.
Keyboard: So Trent developed all the
lyrics and melody lines?
Wink: Basically. . . .We're both
artists, and when I work with the artist, I do my thing, and then I say,
"I respect you as an artist. I dig what you do. So do what you do to
this." It's kind of like, "Here's a painting. I'm not going to tell you
what to do. Just do it." And what Trent did I thought was very cool. We
actually did two different mixes of it. They did a mix and sent it to me,
and then I did a mix, which is the one that ended up on the album. They
made the vocals really stand out, like a song; like they're used to doing
it. I'm used to dealing with it more like a track, where there's more
more tension in between the vocals and the track.
Thanks ever so much to: Parastryka
Sean Beavan News
Sean Beavan
who has done work for Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails in the past will
be jumping on the band wagon along for the new Guns n' Roses album....
The prospect of hot-shot producer
Youth working on Guns n' Roses' long-
awaited next album didn't age well,
or for very long, according to sources
close to the situation. In the
latest saga surrounding the group, which now
features only one original
member (Axl Rose), Sean Beavan (Marilyn Manson,
Nine Inch Nails) has
replaced Youth as the latest knob-turner to tentatively
sign on to
produce the next album.
According to insiders, Beavan has been
asked by Rose to get involved in the
project, and the producer has
accepted in principle, although details and
contracts have yet to be
worked out. Neither G n' R's or Beavan's management,
or the group's
Geffen label, would comment, but sources close to the G n' R
camp
confirmed that Youth, their last producing candidate, is no longer
welcome in the jungle. No details were available regarding his dismissal,
but
sources say things just "didn't work out" with the producer, who's
best known
as the bassist for Killing Joke and the co-producer of the
Verve's Urban
Hymns. Whether he actually recorded any material with the
band -- which now
includes former NIN guitarist Robin Finck, former
Replacements bassist Tommy
Stinson, erstwhile Vandals drummer Josh Freese
and keyboardist Dizzy Reed --
is unknown, but considered unlikely. Beavan
is the fourth name to surface as a
potential Gunners' producer, a list
that's also included former G n' R
producer Mike Clink and techno whiz
Moby.
The remodeled Guns n' Roses have been writing and demoing
new material for at
least two years. Recording and programming has been
administered by Critter,
an engineer/remixer, who's recently remixed
material for Manson, God Lives
Underwater and Sheryl Crow. Critter is
expected to remain on board once the
sessions get underway, assuming they
actually do, but, like Beavan, his exact
role has yet to be determined.
Sources at Geffen say the company is hoping for a mid-1999
release of the new
album, which would be nearly six years after the band
released the all-covers
album The Spaghetti Incident? and nearly eight
since it put out Use Your
Illusion I & II.
Manson In the UK
Manson will
be on another radio station.. be ready!!
Marylin Manson will be on radio1 (uk) on friday 25th
september. He will
be appearing on the Jo Whiley show between 12 and 2pm.
This Candian based website here states
that
the US single is to be released on Tuesday which is false. Interscope
doesn't know where they
are getting their "facts" from. They've been
wrong many times before...
Large NIN Tid-bit
This story was told on 102.1 Edge
(Toronto) last
night. I don't remember the DJ's name unfortuanatly. He
talked about how
he became friends with some guys from PWEI. They were
in Toronto, around
the time of the NIN/Jim Rose tour. He was talking to
the band, and they
invited him and a friend to go to Montreal to see
their show. So they
went, and PWEI was opening for NIN (or maybe they
were just playing around
the same date). After the show the "Poppies"
(as he refered to them) told
the DJ & his friend to follow them. Along
the way the DJ met a guy from
Toronto that he knew, so he told him to
follow them, even though they had
no idea where they were going. They
ended up going to Laser-Quest
(laser-tag). And when they walked in, who
was there but Trent & NIN, Jim
Rose and various other members of the
groups. They got to play Laser-Quest
with Trent and the gang for like 2
hours. He said it was like a NIN video,
because it was dark, there were
all sorts of weird lights, and people were
being shot. Definitely an
amazing experience.
Thanks a lot to: the looker.
No Win For NIN
David Bowie's
remix of "I'm Afraid Of Americans" by Nine Inch Nails was nominated for
Best
International Video at last nights Much Music Video Awards, but lost
to
Madonna's Ray Of Light.
Thanks to: scott.

Manson Music On NBC's Dateline
Manson music on Dateline report and more...
I just finished watching NBC's Dateline which had a
feature about some
kids gone bad. The kids started doing petty crimes
then arson and
then murder.
At the beginning of the bit the
newsperson mentioned the kids cruising
around listening to Marilyn
Manson while "Sweet Dreams" was playing in
the background. Other songs,
only off of "Smells Like Children" were
used in the background. I
recognized "Diary of a Dopefiend," "Dance
of the Dopehats," "Everlasting
Cocksucker," and "I Put A Spell On
You." At the end of the report while
the newsperson was trying to
find a reason to why the kids went bad,
Manson was mentioned, but he
said that they weren't a factor.
For once there was a newspiece mentioning violence and Manson
together,
but not blaming Manson for what had happened. I figure NBC
will post a
transcript of the show on their websight, but I have not
checked it out.
Thanks a lot to: charley.
