Trent Reznor on Creating Movie Scores

February 10, 2012

Musician Trent Reznor is well-known for his successful creation and management of the band Nine Inch Nails. In more recent years, though, Reznor has focused his creative attentions on projects very different from his rock band. For example, in the last year, Reznor has gained significant recognition for his movie scores.

Few NIN fans realize that Reznor first tried his hand at score composition all the way back in 2001 when he was asked to create the score for "One Hour Photo." Although that initial attempt was not used for the movie itself, it would pave the way for far more significant success in his later score attempts. Almost a decade later, the director of "The Social Network" asked Reznor to compose the score for this real-life drama. This time, Reznor's score was not only used, but it received critical acclaim, ultimately earning him a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2011.

Reznor followed the success of his score for "The Social Network" with yet another full-length composition for the 2011 thriller "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo." While this darker and more eccentric score was not as overwhelmingly well-received as his last score, it earned him another Golden Globe nomination. Reznor has not yet announced his next score composition project, as he is currently focusing on writing new songs for the next Nine Inch Nails album, expected in 2013.

  • This is a great source of information. I have loved Trent Reznor for many years and to see his talent for music making its way to the big screen is exciting. I loved his score for The Social Network and even more so for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. - keeperleague2 on 3/23/2012
